For Sale: Zaurus 750c and extras

750 c
512mb scandisk SD card
4gig Hitachi CF card
Wifi CF card (symbol)
Extended battery, with case adapter
Auto power supply
Some non-free apps (will include registration codes)

I bought this past summer, use it less than I'd like. The zaurus is in good shape- it's been used, but it isn't scrached. I have the original box for it. Currently has cacko on it. I'm advertising it here first as it's friendlier than ebay. I'll ship where ever, but CA and US are easiest. I'll take paypal. I'm not putting a price on things as I'd like to sell it as a package and I think people know what it's worth. I'll probably put it up on ebay if nobody grabs it here.

You can message me through this, or reach me at my name (arthur) + @eggplantmedia.com

I will be happy to provide pictures. I'm realizing I might not know where the ac adapter is (I only use the car adapter because I'm always on the road). If I can't find the origional, I will buy a substitute or knock 20 bucks of a fair price).

the three digit code is located on the line under the barcode, so unfortunately yes, you probably have to buy it.  If you're buying from somebody who has the drive, they can probably tell you...

good luck!

16) Format the drive using any of you favorite windows OS's, I used XP.
NOTE: I Don't know if you can format FAT32 witrh linux, but you can format ext2 with linux...I beleive the command is
$ mkfs.ext2 /dev/hda (but I am not a linux expert....just snagged that from some old cacko/crow pages and sustituted device.)

Note that you can do this on your zaurus as root:

#mkfs.msdos /dev/hda1

If you want to make a drive that you can mount easily under osX, fire up your terminal on your mac and do the following:

quicky:~ arthur$ ls /dev/rdisk?
/dev/rdisk0     /dev/rdisk1     /dev/rdisk2

INSERT CF DRIVE INTO MAC

quicky:~ arthur$ ls /dev/rdisk?
/dev/rdisk0     /dev/rdisk1     /dev/rdisk2     /dev/rdisk3

DISCOVER PARTITION

quicky:~ arthur$ ls /dev/rdisk3*
/dev/rdisk3     /dev/rdisk3s1

quicky:~ arthur$ newfs_msdos -v 4gig -F 32 /dev/rdisk3s1

/dev/rdisk3s1: 7982856 sectors in 997857 FAT32 clusters (4096 bytes/cluster)
bps=512 spc=8 res=32 nft=2 mid=0xf0 spt=32 hds=255 hid=0 bsec=7998480 bspf=7796 rdcl=2 infs=1 bkbs=6
quicky:~ arthur$

and now you have a drive that you can mount on your zaurus and your mac!

I returned the 45C that I purchased, got a 43B, and lo! it works! Thanks for everybody's help on this.

So, to answer my earlier question, it was the model of the microdrive, not the 750....

Sharp ROMs / What would you like to see in Cacko 1.22 ROM?
« on: August 26, 2004, 11:05:22 am »
One of the things I wonder about is the difference between having everything that one might need in the rom vs. the customization... the questions about NetFront vs Opera are sort of case in point here- some people like Opera, some like NetFront. So what to do.... I'm not sure that I have the answer to that, but to err on the side of including more rather than less, here are some things that I think would be neat to have in the rom (which might help some some folks with common installation issues).

1) kismet. boy it would be swell to have a functional version out of the box
2) kde apps. I like the kde pim stuff quite a bit and having the kde mail client would be nice (ssl!)
3) vnc. Maybe this is because i'm just a dork and can't get it running, but again, nice to have out of the box
4) various X apps like xmms and xchat.
5) more themes

of course, the argument can be made that people can take the time to install this stuff, but my point is more about getting more functionality out of the box. This (i think?) would be really helpful to new users. It's taken me months to settle on the cacko rom- there are things that i'd rather use other roms for, but for me cacko is the most useable, largely because i've had to do the least amount of customization.

Works for me under both cacko and pdax rom. I don't run the pdax rom on a daily basis, but when I have, it has.

This is the set of information that I've been looking for. Unfortunately looking at my 4gig, it is a 45c which according to this information won't work, and alas, it seems to be the case. Maybe this should go in a FAQ somewhere? I'd be glad to write it up.....

Perhaps we could have a roll call of people using 4gig microdrives and what model they have? Now I'm wondering if there is some difference between the 750 and 760....

Sharp ROMs / Cacko and VNC server
« on: August 03, 2004, 03:13:18 pm »
Please forgive me if this is answered anywhere (i've been searching for the answer all day with no luck). I'm trying to get a vnc server running on cacko1.21b. Tried lots and lots of things.

Here's where I started:
http://sdgsystems.com/download.html

I tried the various servers here, which work to the extent that they actually run the server, but the fbvncinput seems to be compiled for a different kernel:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/fbvncinput
Warning: kernel-module version mismatch
/usr/local/bin/kbdsim.o was compiled for kernel version 2.4.6-rmk1-np2-embedix
while this kernel is version 2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-embedix

Which results in the obviously unhappy situation where the vnc terminal mouse doesn't work and the zaurus doesn't respond to the stylus.

If you've got a vnc server running on your c7x0, where did you download it from and does your mouse work?

thanks!

I've been playing around with this a bit more- still no luck. Any fellow 750 users using a 4 gig drive?

Interesting- the part number and model number on my drive are the same. I'm pretty sure that it isn't defective as it mounts on all the windows, linux (except the zaurus), and mac's that i've tried.

Perhaps the rom that I'm using can't use this drive? I've been trying to do this on cacko 1.21b - what rom are you using?

Anybody know ways of seeing where things are going wrong here? if cardctl can see it, but mount and fdisk can't do anything with it.... is there maybe a newer version of fdisk and/or mount that I should be using?

Looking at /lib/modules does anybody know what module i'd need to have this be recognized?

thanks again!

Thanks for all the suggestions. Unfortunately I can't seem to make it work yet.

So I formated the 4gig with fdisk, creating 1 partition trying both fat32 and ext and neither one seems to work. The card still comes up as anonmous memory. cartctl sees it and say the card is ready, but trying do fdisk /dev/hda or mount /dev/hda from the zaurus still fails. Mount returns an "unable to open device" and fdisk returns a "device not found"

I have the suspcion that I might have gotten the wrong kind of card? For those of you who have the 4gig cards, what is the model number that you're running? Any suggestions on how get the zaurus to see the card?

thanks again for everybody's help. this fourm is really impressive.

Thanks for the links and the advice! There are a few quirks here to throw into the mix:

1) i don't have a windows box... i have an osx box and the fdisk binary on osx appears to be vastly different than the standard fdisk as the menu is different than the ones in the tutorial that you did (thanks! that's great! that should be pinned in a faq somewhere!)

2) on the zaurus, fdisk reports that it is unable to access the device even when logged in as root. this seems pretty odd to me

So I did some digging on how to do this with osx, but still haven't got it to work. I took some advice from here: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?sto...030613121738812
and here: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?sto...030613121738812
for tips on how to do this with osx

here's a log of what i tried to do:

quicky:~ arthur$ ls /dev/rdisk?
/dev/rdisk0     /dev/rdisk1     /dev/rdisk3
quicky:~ arthur$ sudo diskutil partitionDisk disk3 1 MS-DOS partOne 4G
Started partitioning on disk disk3
Creating Partition Map
 5% ..Formatting Disk
100% ..
Finished partitioning on disk disk3
/dev/disk3
   #:                   type name               size      identifier
   0: FDisk_partition_scheme                    *3.8 GB   disk3
   1:    Apple_partition_map                    31.5 KB   disk3s1
   2:             DOS_FAT_32 PARTONE            3.8 GB    disk3s2

quicky:~ arthur$ ls /dev/rdisk3*
/dev/rdisk3     /dev/rdisk3s1   /dev/rdisk3s2

quicky:~ arthur$ sudo umount /Volumes/PARTONE/
umount: /Volumes/PARTONE: Operation not permitted

quicky:~ arthur$ sudo newfs_msdos -v fat32 /dev/rdisk3s2
/dev/rdisk3s2: 7983776 sectors in 997972 FAT32 clusters (4096 bytes/cluster)
bps=512 spc=8 res=32 nft=2 mid=0xf0 spt=32 hds=255 hid=0 bsec=7999408 bspf=7797 rdcl=2 infs=1 bkbs=6

at this point, the drive still mounts clean under osx, but the zaurus is still unhappy- fdisk continues to report "unable to open /dev/hda". Is there some other device name that it would be coming in as?

this forum has been super helpful for me- thanks!

So in the effort to create a an amazing little workstation (and to decrease ipod envy) I got myself a 4gig cf card (hitachi 4gig microdrive).

I'm curious if i managed to get the correct one- as the one I have is being stubbern. It mounts on my desktop just fine, but refuses on the zaurus. While the card manager sees it as "anonmous memory" attempts to mount it (mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/cf) fail. attempting to fdisk it, doing some thing like:

fdisk -l /dev/hda

nets me nothing, while

fdisk /dev/hda

fails to open the device.

does anybody have any experience trying to get one of these cards to work that can point me in the right direction? I've tried mounting it both under cacko1.21 and oz3.5.5 and 3.3.6
