Cxx0 General discussions / Memory Shortage
« on: October 27, 2004, 04:37:23 am »
I was on the train the other day listen to MP3s with music player and reading an ebook with qpdf. I kept having a window pop up and tell me there wasn't enough memory and that I should close one of the open programs...Is there anyway to disable this popup? It seemed fine when I just close the window and left everything running.

Security and Networking / TCP over USB fails after suspend
« on: October 27, 2004, 04:27:29 am »
Thanks for your help barnarda. I wasn't actually able to get it connected like you said. When I bridged the connections, I was able to ping back and forth between the XP box (gateway) and the Zaurus, and from the Zaurus to the router, but I wasn't able to get it connected.

I decided to try ICS again, and for some reason this time it works. Haven't had any problems with suspends or reboots. I'm not sure what was different from what I had before though .

Security and Networking / TCP over USB fails after suspend
« on: October 20, 2004, 12:54:06 am »
Thank you very much Barnarda. That resolves my automating the route adding. Now I just need to figure out why I get TCP connect errors after I suspend the Zaurus. The strange thing is that the XP box that is the gateway isn't able to surf the net when the Zaurus is plugged in. Forgot to mention that I can ping both computers from the other.

Security and Networking / TCP over USB fails after suspend
« on: October 19, 2004, 11:51:04 pm »
I finally got TCP over USB working last night. The gateway computer is an XP box and I was able to surf the net and use qpe-gaim to send instant messages. However, after I suspend the Zaurus and then try to connect to the computer I it doesn't seem to want to work.

I open NetFront and a terminal window and type 'qcop QPE/Network "up()"' but when I try to use NetFront I get a TCP connect error. At first I thought it had something to do with an error I was getting after the qcop command --> "SlSharedManager: cannot find proc entry" however that doesn't seem to be related and appears seemingly randomly.

I did notice, however, that when I su-ed to root and typed "route add default gw 192.168.0.1" it didn't complain of a duplicate entry. After that when I would try to browse with NetFront I wouldn't immediately get a TCP error. It would look as though it was trying to find the site. At the same time I tried to browse the web from the gateway computer and noticed that both seemed to time out. After unplugging the Zaurus, the gateway computer would be fine though.

Anyone have any clues as to why this might happen? I know that if I reboot the Zaurus it seems to fix the problem (still have to run "route add default gw 192.168.0.1" though. Is there anyway I can automate that?).

General Discussion / Formatting SD card
« on: October 16, 2004, 01:19:01 am »
Well, I don't know what I did...mostly ejecting and reinserting the SD card. Before, it was showing contents on the card, then it started showing nothing. I can't recall if I did anything else before that to have any effect on it, except that I did flash the ROM and reverted to a clean install of the Sharp 1.40 JP. I don't if this had anything to do with it (it was something I was planning on doing, not actually in response to the SD card not working).

After I saw that nothing seemed to be on the SD card, I tried fdisk and it worked, then I formatted to ext2 again. So...I don't really know what happened and I probably never will

obscurite:

This is a previous thread that maybe you hadn't seen and might help you.

You can download embedded console and install it on your Zaurus.

General Discussion / Formatting SD card
« on: October 15, 2004, 08:03:09 pm »
I was messing around with my Zaurus and accidentally ejected the SD w/o unmounting it. It is formatted as ext2 and was corrupted after the eject. I've been trying to format it again, but I'm having difficulties.

I found an armutils package online that provided fdisk, however, after unmounting the SD card fdisk still complains that it can't read /dev/mmcda1 (nor /dev/mmcda for that matter). I've also tried fsck but I get an error about a bad superblock (I've also tried running it with the -b option and using other superblocks). mk2fs.ext2 gives an error saying the device size is reported to be zero.

Any ideas on what I might be able to do to solve this problem? Thanks.

Security and Networking / Connecting to access points
« on: July 31, 2004, 04:38:38 am »
I don't get it. I was able to connect to the net through one of the APs that Kismet found one time. Everytime since then I haven't been able to connect to any APs that I've found that weren't WEP enabled and gave me some kind of IP. Have I just been really unlucky?

The one time I managed to connect I used a connection with the 'Non-Spec ESS-ID' option checked and it worked. Since then I've tried that setting, but I've also tried setting the ESS-ID to 'ANY' manually and then setting the TCP/IP and DNS servers for DHCP. I also tired manually entering in an IP address along with the IP address of the AP for the gateway and DNS server. Nothing seemed to work.

I guess I've just been really, really unlucky, huh?

This question is directed to others in Japan.

I believe I saw a FOMA IPK package on the ezaurus website a few days ago. Also, I've been seeing this advertised with mobile phones lately. Anyone one know exactly what it is?

Security and Networking / Connecting to access points
« on: July 28, 2004, 03:32:43 am »
Thanks for your help again. I've managed to connect to the net through one of the access points (I'm typing this from my Zaurus). To answer my own question, yeah the IP block is the IP address.

Thanks for your reply.

When you say the IP address for an AP is that the section in Kismet listed as 'IP Block'?

Security and Networking / Connecting to access points
« on: July 24, 2004, 08:55:39 am »
I've gotten kismet working on my C860 and I can see wireless networks as I walk around or ride the train, but how can I connect to any of these to surf the web?

The manner in which I War-walk or War-ride-the-train is as follows, from the konsole:

# cardctl scheme CardResume
# cardctl scheme qpewlan0
# kismet
(study some access points, then close kismet)
# cardctl scheme default

This method seems to work for me in finding access points, but I don't know how to connect. I thought maybe trying to change my network settings from a static IP to DHCP and I end up with this error:

checking: eth0
Changing scheme from 'CardResume' to 'qpewlan1'...
message=dot11req_mibset
  mibattribute=dot11PrivacyInvoked=false
  resultcode=success
/etc/pcmcia/network initialization failed.
Some devices did not start cleanly.

It doesn't seem to matter though because I can load up kismet and find wireless nets. Just don't know how to go about connecting to them.

Cxx0 General discussions / I'm confused. Which ROM should I use?
« on: July 24, 2004, 05:48:22 am »
I installed qpe-language on the original ROM (I have a C860) and qpe-i18n-en. When I want everything in English, I just go to the Language settings in the configuration tab and change to English.

I usually leave it in Japanese though since I used a script that StuBear made to convert a lot of the Japanese to English yet maintain the Japanese localization.

If you want to try it ---> http://ipkgfind.handhelds.org/result.phtml?section=qpe
