5x00 General discussions / Best Rom For Sl5500
« on: July 24, 2005, 09:23:57 pm »
I downloaded the hentges ROM with openzaurus 3.5.3.   The kernel had the same problem that openz 3.5.3 had at first, with suspend happening in weird places.  I simply  installed the hentges ROM (with full opie cardfs option) and replaced the hentges kernel with the updated openz 3.5.3 kernel that came out on 6/30.

It is awesome...all of the great features of openzaurus with most opie software pre-installed.   After many hours of trying to get opie packages to install right, Hentges really saves time.

Also, the cardfs functionality is excellent.  It puts /home/root on your SD or CF card and stores the packages there.   Since I use the 64-0 kernel on the SL-5500, this means that I cannot lose data since it is all in the rom or on the SD/CF card.

It is absolutely awesome.   Hentges did a great job. -> http://www.hentges.net/

Sadly, I am still selling my zaurus, since the battery life is blah.

I put my used Zaurus SL-5500 up on ebay, but will sell direct also.

Condition: plastic body of the PDA is a little worn, otherwise very good condition.
I will ship anywhere if you pay for the shipping.
I am located in Ohio, U.S.

Pictures : http://ebay.jalex.net/

Price here (direct): $178 USD + actual shipping.
Details: Same item as on ebay.
Payments accepted: Paypal only, because it's easy.

I did flash the ROM again with Hentges' openz version and really like it.  I might leave that on there.  But it appears to use the kernel with the suspend annoyance from the original 3.5.3 - still thinking about what I will do with that.

It has no hardware issues that I can find and other than the wear on the plastic body of the PDA, it's great.

I check email regularly in the evenings and all weekend.  Thank you.

5x00 Hardware / 5500 charging circuit
« on: September 01, 2004, 05:44:40 am »
I measured current with a multimeter.    When you initially put the AC adapter into the Z, it will cause a very quick short - not sure if this is normal.  Continuity tester showed the same thing - a quick beep just as you hit the connectors.  If this is normal, and the current is too high, damage is possible, I would think.

My connectors are fine.  I get close to 5V at the terminals under the keyboard and at the AC jack terminals.  The terminals measure the same if I am using the USB docking cradle or AC directly.

I have a 5500, serial 27030301.  It runs and boots from battery.  However, I cannot charge the battery, even when I turn charge on from Diag menu.   The AC adapter that came with it, Phihong PSC10A-050 says it is 5V at 2A current.  However, when I test it with a multimeter I get 3.8 Amps, at 5.01V.   I suspect this AC adapter may have damaged the Z, but no way to know since I received it second hand and the previous person seemed to think it worked or something.

I am getting very low volts/amps from the battery terminals, even when it was running with the ilght on.  I can get to the diag menu on battery, but AC doesn't seem to register.  I do see the volts cycle on the middle connector of the battery connections, which is good, since it uses a little cycle to detect the battery.

Without AC registering or charging, I cannot flash the ROM.

I was wondering if someone had a link or document with the voltage/current of a good, healthy zaurus on hand.  I think this would be helpful.

Also, where is the charging circuit on the Z and how do I identify the components.  The resistors, transistors and capacitors all look very different from the big old ones I am used to seeing.  Some of the components even have numbers on them.

I will probably end up sending it this Z tio Romax in Texas.  I got their info from the 1-800-be-sharp messages.  Unfortunately, I can't help but believe I am screwed and it will cost 100+ dollars to fix.

Before I sell it for parts, it would be absolutely awesome if someone with a healthy Z has some info on what to expect from it and what may be possible.

Thanks.

General Discussion / zaurus 5500 won't charge batteries ??
« on: August 25, 2004, 10:48:03 pm »
I just bought a Z 5500 off of ebay.  It reacts a little strange to the AC adapter so I checked it out.  I am gettnig 5 V but 3.6 A off the adapter, despite the fact that it says 5V 2A.  it's a Phihong PSC10A-050 model.

From the battery terminals, when the AC adapter is plugged in, I was getting just over 1.2 V.  The battery slowly drains whether plugged in or not.  I tried the AC adapter in the cradle and without and the same results.

A friend lent me his battery and I was able to bring the Z alive.  I was unable to use C-D-reset to flash though - probably because the charger isn't detected like normal.

Anyway, the seller claims it was working fine, but I have trouble believing that the power issue existed only after shipping.  The box and packing was good.  The battery was completely dead on arrival.

Diag mode ( D-P-reset ) works and I can see things.  Testing the CF gave some errors, though, but SD did too and I was able to use the SD, so errors might not be a big deal.  memory test and the rest went fine.

The voltage check showed the battery at 4.1 v when I first put it in.

I think the battery drained because I cannot get it back on again.  I am frustrated, because when I test it with the Zaurus AC adapter tomorrow, which my friend will lend me, I will be really sad that it is the Z.

Anyone want a Z for parts or have any ideas?
