Zaurus - pdaXrom / Rc8 C860 No Sound
« on: January 13, 2005, 08:58:24 pm »
An update... I grabbed a copy of lsof, and recalled that fuser also serves the purpose. Both show nothing (i.e., /dev/dsp -> /dev/sound/dsp is free, according to them). Yet, any attempt to start esd | esdcat | esdctl yields "Can't open /dev/dsp!". I am running as root.

Any ideas?..

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Rc8 C860 No Sound

I have a related (I believe) problem. XMMS will often refuse to play the next (MP3) file in a sequence, for no apparent reason. Any further attempt to do anything sound related (restart esd, run mpg123, etc.) results in an error message "/dev/dsp: Device a resource busy" or "Can't open /dev/dsp!". This does not go away when I kill X. I couldn't immediately identify who is holding /dev/dsp (esd is not running, and an attempt to start it results in this same error message), and fstat is not available...

Two separate questions: (1) Why can this be happening in the first place? (2) Once it has happened, what can I do, short of rebooting?

FWIW, this is in RC8 only; I can't recall seeing it in RC5.

Cxx0 General discussions / C860 keyboard stops responding problem

I've had this problem recently since upgrading to Cacko 1.21b, on resuming from suspends
The keyboard froze on me today on resuming from suspend (pdaXrom 1.1.0 "Kathrin" RC3). I had an Ambicom WiFi card inserted. Now, I remember reading something about this (or similar?) problem being solved by moving a cardctl (?) command by a line or two in some script. But I can't find that page anymore... Does anybody remember it? Thanks much in advance!

Cxx0 General discussions / Do I need a power converter for the C860?

FWIW, http://www.pdabuyersguide.com/tips/Zaurus_...accessories.htm mentions a world adapter (100-240 V), which seems to be about as small as the native one. Not too cheap though.

General Discussion / c860 vs 6000
« on: August 19, 2004, 03:52:16 pm »
I'm another person planning to buy a Z, and have been hesitating between a 6000L and a C860. I was somewhat biased towards the clamshell, and reading this thread seems to have amplified that feeling. I do have a few extra questions though, concerning the C860 (hope you can bear with me - most if not all of them *are* newbie!):

1. I've read that you can "brick" the thing if you make a mistake updating the ROM. How much of a danger is there really? What should I watch out for? (I am a professional UNIX developer, but my current experience with PDAs is, well, zero.)

2. Which ROM would people recommend for starters? What I want to do is some text editing/emailing, some Web surfing, perhaps a few games. I'd like to run X if it's practical.

3. How much of a nuisance are the Japanese characters on/near the keys? In particular, did I get it right that the Ctrl and Alt keys are not marked in English?

4. How well does it work with Bluetooth? What card(s) is/are recommended? Any success/failure stories?

Thanks much in advance!
