curses, my card is indeed the new version, i guess there is a trip to Frys in my future for tomorrow... i guess it will be the Linksys then, too bad as i like the looks of the Socket offering better..

hi all... i purchased a Socket WiFi CF card yesterday for use w/ my new c860, but it doesn't seem to operate at all in my c860, is this card compatible w/ the c860? the LED indicators on mine do not light up ever, either when the unit is powered up or when the card is inserted. also, it doesn't seem to show up at all in the Networking applet. any clarification would be great, i can return the card to Fry's tonight i assume if it going to be a show-stopper w/ my c860.

my Socket WiFi card has the following codes on the back, if that will help anyone to identify it!

General Discussion / Best ROM for a c860 newbler..?

hi all... just got my c860 yesterday in the mail, beautiful device, booted it up and of course cant do much of anything w/ it yet due to the language constraint. i understand that i need to flash the ROM in the device w/ a different version to enable english operation, but as i hunt through the various forums for the myriad different ROMs that are available, i get more and more confused as to which i should even be looking at. so, i was hoping that some kind soul could browse through my short list of needs in regards to my c860, and recommend the most painless ROM for my initial flash... as i get more familiar w/ the device and its quirks i'm sure i will try out others, but a good starting point would be nice. heres what i need...

1. web browsing w/ java
2. media playback (mp3, avi, etc.)
3. terminal function/command line
4. email (that external email light working would be nice!)
5. SSH and FTP
6. game emulators of some sort would be nice, but not a prerequisite...
7. Socket wi-fi and Bluetooth card support

if anyone could make a suggestion as to what ROM would be a good starter for a true Zaurus newbler, i would greatly appreciate it... i have a long-time familiarity w/ *nix already though, for what its worth... thx in advance all..!

Doing a search on the forums will yield a multitude of answers to your questions.  Have you tried doing so?  That's actually helped me a lot in making my buying decisions.

Hint:  SD is for storage only.  CF for everything else.

ah, your answer about SD for storage and CF for everything else, that actually clears up my confusion on this subject, thx for your reply..!

I use the RTM-8000 on my C760. I use it for data only, as I have no voice plan. I've heard from other users that they can use it for voice as well, but through command line AT-type commands, to dial, answser and hangup.

It's been a great help for me, for SSH and email while on the road. Hard to do with a WiFi.

tamarian, can you tell me if you are getting GPRS data through this device, or just regular dial-up access? such a feature would be very useful to me, but i'd hate my providers GPRS service to sit idle..!

hi all... i broke down finally last night and ordered a c860, it is already on its way via DHL. i'd like to order some needed peripherals today so i will have them in-hand when it arrives, can anyone point me in the right direction here? i am unclear which slot should go towards which needs... what i must have is:

expanded storage, 1Gb at least

Bluetooth (SD or CF???)

Wi-fi would be nice but isn't a prerequisite... if anyone could list for me what peripherals (brands, models) work best and w/out issue on the c860 it would be most appreciated, thx in advance all, cant wait until it arrives..!

hi all.. considering purchasing my first Zaurus clamshell very soon, but was curious whether anyone thought there may be a replacement for the c860 on the horizon perhaps? i am not very familiar w/ the product line so not sure how long it has been in the past between the various models, and would hate to buy one now only to find it outdated in a month...

any input or opinion on this matter would be great, thx in advance all..!
