Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Sun Java On Opie
« on: January 26, 2007, 09:02:07 am »
Hi,

I saw the news about Sun releasing the source of their JVM and was wondering if anyone had managed to get it working on OPIE?

Having looked on the boards it looks as if people have tried on pdaXrom and Oz/GPE.

Having had a quick read of the problems they GPE guys where having, it seams to be with libqt, which is part of the OPIE release.

I was wondering if anyone knew if I could take the pdaXrom package and install it on OZ/OPIE? Are the lib versions the same?

Thanks....

To all using Watapon... I'm sorry. I just don't have the time to continue it's development currently.[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=113203\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I hope I can speak for all of us when I extend my thanks for the work you've done. It is much appreciated. Don't feel bad, I'm sure someone will pick up the torch. You concentrate on your 'real' life now

take care

I agree with Grog, thanks for a great ROM, now go have a life, you deserve it.

Sharp ROMs / Watapon ROM
« on: August 29, 2005, 10:55:52 am »
Hi Chaos,
For starters, great ROM.  Just what I was looking for for my 5600.
I like your idea for moving to OPIE, was using OZ/OPIE on my 5500 until I upgraded.
Any idea if Jeode will still work, I think most of the issues with OZ/OPIE and Jeode (of which there are many) come for the fact it doesn't use GCC 2.95. Will the new Watapon ROM use 2.95?

On an aside I found this thread in the QT development forum about a DSL based Zaurus development environment. It makes setting up a dev environment alot easier. I was wondering if it might be an idea to see if someone could create an environment based on this for the new Watapon ROM. Might make life easier if app need to be recompilied?

Looking forward to see Watapon 2.0....

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Rss Application For Gpe

Hi

Is there some RSS software for GPE (graphical or console)?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=91715\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

If I remember right, GPE has a java virtual machine in it's feeds.  I've not tried it, but QuackNews should work. You will need to change the command line a bit, but other that that it  should be ok.

If you try this, please pm me with any comments you have on getting it to run.

Software / Quacknews Version 0.4.3 Released
« on: August 11, 2005, 04:15:01 pm »
Announcing the release of QuackNews version 0.4.3.

There are two of new features introducted in version 0.4.3.
1. Syncing speed caching.
Now, QuackNews will only download and cache locally those feed items that are not currently cached.  This should mean that fewer articles will be downloaded, but QuackNews will use more storage space when processing.
2.New template tokens
There are now two new template tokens, the first is resolved into the current templates path, allowing for files to be included at run time, such as images.  The other token allows for different html to be included depending on the caching value for the current feed.
Also, the [%I] token can be added into the index_item.html file, allowing an "all in one" style index page.

All bug fixes and feature requests are managed via the QuackNews' Sourceforge project. See http://sourceforge.net/projects/quacknews/ for more details.

Hi all.
I've been having some problems with jeode on Opie. I installed jeode, and had some problems running anything at first. There was something wrong with oz-compat, so I reinstalled it today. Then I ran oz-compat on both PrimTest and Quasar - sweet success! So I figured - no problem, now I'll be able to run my own apps that I compiled on my Linux box. I had been able to run both a "Hello World" app and another thing from the Sun Website that puts a funky little design in a window when I was using Jeode on the Sharp ROM. But here, I can't get either of these to work at all. The most recent error I had was: "/opt/QtPalmtop/bin/evm: symbol lookup error: /opt/QtPalmtop/bin/evm: undefined symbol: _7QString.shared_null".

If anyone has any thoughts on how I can get these going I'd be much obliged - I'd really love to be using the zaurus to work with my own java programs, and I don't think I could go back to the Sharp ROM. This is all on a 5600 with Opie 3.5.2.

Thanks,
Barry

I had this issue when I went to 3.5.3.
I never have managed figure out why Jeode would sometimes work and sometimes not, must be some thing to do with the state of the moon or the tides or something.

Check the compat stuff, I'm really sure it's that.
(I fixed it by using Watapon instad of OZ  ).

General Discussion / Mono Development On The Sl-c3000
« on: June 10, 2005, 05:10:29 am »
Quote
Hello,

I didn't find an appropriate forum for this topic, so I posted here.

Does anyone do C# development on the Zaurus SL-C3000 (or 1000) using the MONO packages from http://www.eringal.com/zaurusmono/?

Is it possible to use the mono framework for developing graphical applications for the Zaurus? Is it possible to create real platform independent programs, as .net promises?

I intend to develop some programs using graphical output (such as outliners, mindmappers...), which also run on other platforms without the need to port the code, and which are future-proof (so don't have to be ported once new platforms come to market, which hopefiully support the .net framework).

I don't know anything about .net yet, so my assumptions may be naive, but maybe this is the way to create real platofrm-independent software?

Thanks for any input!

daniel

Hi,
I don't know if the 3000/1000's come with Java, but I would surgest using that rather than the Mono version above.  I have used Mono at work and the version that your talking about is VERY old.  Unless you want to port the current version (available at [a href=\"http://www.mono-project.com)]http://www.mono-project.com)[/url] it's going to be very hard going.
That said it would be great if someone would port this over.....

I believe there is a version of swing that will work on the zaurus and this will allow you to write an very nice looking application in java that will run on most desktops and a number of PDAs.

I looked into this when I thought about writing QuackNews (had to get the plug in somewhere) and this was the main reasong for using Java over C#.

Hpe this helps...

I was wondering if there is a reason why my application won't install onto a SD or CF card, and will only install into the main memory when using the Sharp ROM.
(This is on a  5500)
It works fine installing into the main memory, so is there womething special I have to do in the installer?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Jeode/java On Oz 3.5.3 + Opie
« on: June 05, 2005, 11:13:54 am »
Quote
It's working for me.  Install the Sharp compatibility library.  Make a shell script for your Java application.  Run makecompat on the shell script.  Then invoke the shell script.  All makecompat does is to put a the path to the Sharp library in your LD_LIBRARY_PATH and create a symbolic link to some file that evm, the Java interpreter, needs before it invokes your original script.  You can make a shell script that includes all that and skip running makecompat.

Not the question I asked.   What I asked was, has anyone got Jeode running on 3.5.3 in a state that's usable, i.e. have the Compatability issues been fixed and is there anything special I need to do in addition to the usual steps for OZ 3.5.2.
I had Opera running before I stopped using OZ 3.5.3, but it was not stable.  Jeode did work for a very short amount of time, but kept needing to be fixed and was not very usable.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Jeode/java On Oz 3.5.3 + Opie
« on: June 03, 2005, 04:41:01 pm »
I was wondering if anyone has got Java (Jeode) running on OZ 3.5.3+OPIE?
I tried 3.5.3 when it first came out and couldn't get it or Opera working due to what seemed to be issues with the Sharp-Compat code  .  Since then I have had to go back to the Sharp Rom, as I really need access to the a JVM.
If people have got it working, or know of another option I'd be very grateful.

Software / Quacknews 0.4.2 Released
« on: May 30, 2005, 03:22:57 pm »
QuackNews version 0.4.2 is out.
This is the formal release of the article download feature and I have improved the download spead a bit. Also 0.4.2 has a URL Modification feature.
This allows the user to modify the article's URL and all QuackNews download a more device friendly version of the article.
Can be found either via the ELSI or here:
http:\\www.xlevel.org.uk

If you downloaded QuackNews 0.4.2 before 31/05 7.00am GMT then there is an error in the runQuackNews shell script.
Either download the new version or edit this file and change

User Request for Applications / Rss Aggregator/reader
« on: May 13, 2005, 08:33:38 am »

I just tried QuackNews 0.4.1, and have a few thoughts ...

1-it requires that you install it in the main memory.  It'd be nicer if I could install it on my SD or CF card.
2-I'm not sure how others feel about this, but launching it should automatically grab and sync feeds.  In fact, it'd be nice if it then displayed the respective pages in some kind of order (the less steps in viewing the feeds, the better).
3-I noticed that the browser must be launched.  ok, I can deal with that.  It then lists the feeds.  Rather than that, I'd prefer to simply have all the feed information shown right away.  I then have to click on the feed, and it then retrieves the feed.  It should already have done that for me, so I don't have to spend too much time.  For me, I'd like to pop in and pop out.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=79403\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Thanks for the idea's Ken, I'll see what I can do.
1. Not that sure what it is that makes an app able to be installed on a card and not just the main memory, if anyone does, please PM me.
2. Think this will need to be a user configurable option, I'm thinking either a command line option, therefore you could have two links, one to auto sync and one to manual sync, or a application property, any preferances?
3. If I list all the feed items in one page, this will make one large HTML page.  I was thining, would you prefer a global setting, all items in a single page or a per feed setting?  I thinking global, but I don't think I'd use it, so don't really mind.

I really think that QN and DM have a place.
The aim of QN is to create something that can be used on as many different platforms as possible, and in the long run I hope to port it to J2ME MIDP/CLDC so it'll work on phones/palmos devices/etc...
If QN and DM can push each other, learning and improving, then everyone gains.
At the end of the day, OS projects are there for the users, if no one luses it, what's the point?

Please keep posting your impressions and idea's, oh and PLEASE tell me when you find a bug, I know there are some, but if no one tells me about them, I can't fix them...

Think it's not a bad idea...
Quote
The cons would be:

* Another possible forum reshuffle to move all non-Zaurus products into their own "Group"
* An influx of twinks / n00bs who just won't use the goddam search button

Just telling it like it is...
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=78106\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
We where all new once, and I think the benifit of new technical people and advertising the Zaurus product range is worth the pain of having to repeat our selfs.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Kaffe-gtk/opie Stupid Question?
« on: April 29, 2005, 08:19:44 am »
I've been looking into getting Java running on OZ 3.5.3 with OPIE desktop.
Having issues with Jeode, keep getting a 'Bus Error' message  , when I try running evm, so tought I'd try Kaffe.
Had a look at the dependancies, and a number of them come from the X11 feed, so the question is, will adding X11 items onto a OPIE destop cause issues?
Or should everything work OK...
Also, does anyone know what classes the feed version of Kaffe implements, primarily if there is AWT support?
