General Discussion / What Is Wrong With Qtopia, Why Opie?

How is the 770 doing this? is it a real debian system?

even though one could for instance have an "install profile" for the amount of memory you had installed so you only got packages you needed, it would still be nice to have thousands of packages to chose from:)

I ran debian on my nslu2 266mhz 32mb ram disk server a few weeks back. Although I had plenty of hard drive space and ran ssh only (did plan for vnc or something with x, but did not get that far), it still is pretty close spec-wise to my zaurus. and it did run a debian system fine, with the option of installing tons of official debian packages on my will.

Maybe later on, when all handheld devices have plenty of storage and a screen equal or better to the 770 we might see such an initiative to make handheld linux as easy as desktop linux.

Nice  Do you know if they plan on using a new image with qtopia or debian packages? Is it at all possible to do this, so that all you would have to do was to add a new feed and apt-get ?

Thank you!

Do advancements in qtopia get included into opie (like safari and konqueror?) Like the qtopia 2 series improvements, or why not?

Why are applications not compatible? Do the opie team put any effort into comaptibility at this point?

I read at hentges site that opie development or something made opie a bad candidate for basing a rom project on. Is this true? why is this?

Both safare and konqueror aren't part of qtopia and have never been. Also note that the term ROM only applies to the sharp stuff, almost every other project uses writable images.

Sorry about that, safari uses the khtml engine from konqueror, so the konqueror team impliments the changes back when the source is released. So I was wondering if opie did impliment the changes from qtopia into opie to avoid reinventing the wheel and keep opie compatible and equaly advanced. Lpotter answered that one

Also Cresho pretty much wraps my opinions up nicely. I do like the qtopia/opie GUI but opie has allways let me down, and I have never been able to make a usable setup on my zaurus with it.

I feel that there is a whole lot of work beeing done twice in the linux-handheld world, and much of it can only be used on one specific brand of device. now with the new nokia, the archos, zaurii, ipaqs, yopy and tons of cellphones, there needs to be done something so that what you create for one device isn't totally useless on all the others...

yes, it seems so. And it would be hard to get qtopia into the deian feed due to licensing I think (isn't mysql not prfered by debian due to dual licensing?) But anyhow, extending the debian arm port would be a great solution.

To avoid another rom for the zaurii, it probably would be a great idea to work on getting pdaxrom to be completely debian compatible so that most or all packages came directly from the debian feed (except the kernel and root filesystem set up on diffrent storage media for each device) and were possible to update and install through a debian mirror.

Why is this? Why does Opie exist? why do projects use opie instead of qtopia?

Is this a licensing issue? do people just want to play with the system or what? I am starting to bleive that none of the routes taken by the diffrent roms are correct. I belive that we would be much better of if we just installed debian on all the diffrent handhelds and made qtopia, opie, qpe and maemo debian projects.

The new nokia seems to me to be the furure of linux handhelds, at least the strongest candidate aas of now. So make everything compatible with that one, and try to get the guis into debian.

So, what is wrong with qtopia? I'd like to have the choice of running qtopia on a nokia 770, but I do not want to end up with the Zaurus incident all over again.

What would be the problem with this? Space restrictions?

Linux Issues / New To Zaurus - Need To Sync
« on: March 02, 2006, 04:26:41 pm »
You might have allready found this out, but the diffrent roms are more like a new distro. Look at them as ubuntu, suse, knoppix and such, and like these distros they might use diffrent ways to display a graphical interface like gpe, qtopia and opie. This can  sort-of be compared to kde and gnome:)

5x00 Hardware / Battery And Charging Issue, Is Battery Done? Fuse?
« on: March 01, 2006, 12:54:52 pm »
My poor old zaurus has been collecting dust in a drawer for allmost a year now, and I thought it would be time to either resurect it or sell it off.

Ever since it was new (refirbished) I have been having an issue with the charging. The zaurus would charge for a while, then suddently stop and not start charging again. Since I did not bother returning it (bought it in GB and I live in Norway) I partially solved the problem by adding a timer to my charger, the timer is like the ones you plug between the wall outlet and the charger, and i set it to turn of he charger at regular intervals.

This is not a problem with the charger itself, I have the exact same problem while charging from usb with a cable I bought.

A year ago the battery was diminishing (but not broken) and the zaurus would last maybe an hour or thirty minutes on battery, then I read about the servicemenu and accidentaly reset the battery level so that it did not work for a full five minutes   I did not manage to fix this then, since I had no multimeter lying around, and still don't. But yesterday I plugged the battery directly to the charger and left it there, tried to reflash and still no cigar though.

My battery is a ea bl06 3.7 v

it's flashed at level 590 (3.7v)
Code: [Select]
Battery Voltage Check

Main Bat AD: 582 (3.7v)

Flashed Delta: 590
delta + 62

Adjust AD: 582 -> 644
 Â         :   (4,1v)

Is it supposed to be charged higher than this? 4.2v? is it possible to make the zaurus allways stay on when connected to mains? Mine obviously does not since it cuts out when the charging stops.

edit: after trying the usb cable again it seems it is able to keep the z powered on, and battery seems better after my trials with charging the battery externally and resetting level in service menu. So it seems to be an issue with direct charging through the charger, fuse issue? Ill come back with updates later

Sharp ROMs / Trolltech Qtopia 2.1 ROM soon
« on: March 13, 2005, 10:09:32 am »
I think it is great and really noble of trolltech to step up to the challange that Sharp has failedd to accomplish. Building a community behind its product is vital, so it is a really smart career mive also, to badabout the hd-crash though:(

Let us hope it arrives before 2006:p

This is a great zaurus replacement. The merged forum has got something wrong though, the resolution is 640x480 and 720x480(? I don't know how an lcd can carry both these resoultions but the tv out might) If they keep this up, release new hardware versions once in a while and perhaps shrink it some in the next version, Then they've got a steady customer. Ideally I'd wait for the next version, but seeing what has happened to sharp, and the vast amounts of alternative linux pdas, I'll buy one as soon as I have the money.

I Thought the sl5500 was too big, not to mention all other pdas made by sharp, but with all these features size is passible. I can surf the web and download gigabytes of porn, watch it on my tv or show it to my friends, move all the porn to my computer and exchange the contents on the archos with gigabytes of pim or text documents that i can either input through onscreen keyboard or textrecognition, THERE IS A FOLDAWAY KEYBOARD AVAILABLE AS AN accessory (no I am not affiliated with archos) so it will be possible to do text input on the thing also, even without bringing a fullsize keytronic (Does keytronic even have usb) keyboard.

WE CAN start bothering Trolltech to release a qtopia 2.1 release for the pma400:P

Nuff ranting from me, only one last  word of wisdom (or two). Any alternative os and its applications MUST be compatible with the original os, I belive this is vital for the survival of a community, not to mention enlisting new people. If you buy such a kit and find that there is loads of great software, but only a third of it is possible to use at your pda/mediaplayer at a time then people will run with tails between their legs. I think this IS A LESSON WE HAVE LEARNED ON THE ZAURUS, AND ALL COMMUNITY PAGES SHOULD HAVE WARNINGS ABOUT CREATING INCOMPATIBLE SOFTWARE; IT SHOULD BE FROWNED UPON!! We need a "qtopia/opie standard base" Maybe it is possible to use lsb in some extent?

EDIT: I was WRONG, It is only qvga, I allmost started to cry when I found that out. Once again a company releases a device with a obvious defect. f*ck it, I just saved myself €800.

General Discussion / Are Sharp Stupid Or Is There A Reason
« on: December 11, 2004, 07:42:57 pm »
We all know about it, sharp seems allmost to carry a grudge against linux users "out of the box". Why did Sharp go in reverse, and accidentally break linux compatibility? Why were there guides to how you should use zaurus with linux in the 5500 series on their websites? Who stops distributing a product because of low sales when they never marketed the products at all? How much would it cost them to continue the support of their websites and the community? Why do they again and again cancel products, go out publically and announce that "our product will not be sold anymore- get lost but come back when we are ready"

Are they just stupid, are they slaves to competing parions in the board of directors? are they beeing threatned to discontinue or not market their products by competitors like palm or Microsoft? Do they let anybody work for them? I'm pretty pissed, I own the 5500 and nobody, least sharp has provided a proper replacement for it.

There are designs which one can license for linux pdas, If your main supplyer are total noobs, then one must also consider creating an industry of ones own. THAT would be cool, a community company selling pdas over the net to people who actually want the products.
