Sharp ROMs / New computer

Hi all, I have been running my SL5500 with version1.0 on Windows 98 with no problems, until my PC died . I now have a new computer with Windows XL, and I want to install the 1.0 software. Will the installation process reformat my SL5500 and erase all of its files? I tried installing the software without the SL5500 connected, the program will open, but will not boot up when  the SL5500 is connected this way. What are my options, if any.  Thanks for any help you can provide.
P.S. I do have the version 1.2B upgrade disc, but wanted to get it running with 1.0 first.
