Zaurus - pdaXrom / Kphone working for PC to phone calls
« on: November 01, 2004, 05:56:16 am »
Quote
When I try to dial out (the numbers I'm trying to dial are like 00441234567890) kphone locks up (using kphone 4.04)

Try dialing 099441234567890 instead (assuming you are using the sipphone.com service), and make sure that you client has registered you with sipphone.com before you try to make a call (you will need to type a password and after that there will be a blue "tick" displayed in the bottom left of the main window to indicate that you are registered (registered here means "signed on/online", rather than "signed up for the service") ).

I believe if you do both of these things, it should work (if you installed kphone-pi as well you may want to check you are running the correct program by running /usr/local/bin/kphone at the command prompt. This will provide some diagnosic output that may help too). Oh, you'll need to open/redirect ports if you are behind a firewall (the port numbers are listed somewhere on www.sippphone.com), and also possibly use their STUN server. Dialing *0 should give you a message letting you know "You are behind a SIP compatible router" or "You may experience problems".

I've used kphone 4.04 to make some pretty lengthy calls to a variety of real phones all over the world, it's only failed me once, cutting out the audio on one side of the conversation half an hour into the call. The longest call I've made has been 1 hour 20 mins.. with no problems. The delay can vary from almost nothing to a second or so. It probably depends to some extent on your ping time to the proxy01.sipphone.com server (for me about 0.15 seconds)

Kphone-4.04 now working for PC-Phone calls
I've successfully called a real phone in the UK from my Zaurus in Japan.

I've only used it with the sipphone.com service, here are my tips to get it working.
[1] There seems to be a problem with the sipphone.com service (not kphone), I contacted their technical support and they gave me a workaround. Now by dialing
099 + country + area + number I am able to successfully make voice calls to real telephones. You should just be able to dial 00+country+area+number but this doesn't work.

[2] I have found that the stereo headphones I have make a perfectly acceptable mic and earpiece. Just use the right ear as the earpiece and the left ear as the mic. The mic quality is not very good, but usable for phone calls.  I have also used a Japanese mobile phone "hands-free" set. In this case you also need a 2.5mm->3.5mm jackplug adapter. The audio quality from this mic much louder and clearer than using headphones for a mic. A final idea for an audio setup is to get an adapter used to connect 2 mono mics into a stereo jack, you can plug a mic into one input and an earpiece into the other. I haven't tried this myself, but I think it should work.

[3] kphone 4.04 works better than kphone-pi -0.97. Both are able to make calls, but kphone-pi cannot hang up. The application just stops responding to user input once the connection has been made. To terminate the call with kphone-pi you must kill the kppi process, and get the other party to hang up their end. Kphone 4.04 works correctly, just click the Hangup button to disconnect the call.

[4] Both kphone and kphone-pi have problems registering with the sipphone.com service. You need to be registered with the service (the client normally registers you with sipphone.com when it starts up) before you can successfully make a call. The only way I have found to get registered is to start a second client when the first client is still running. For some reason the second client pops up a dialog box asking you for your password and then successfully registers, the first client doesn't do this and eventually times out trying to register. This is a bit messy, hopefully someone can figure out an elegant solution.[/li][/list]Finally, what to expect...
The calls are pretty cheap, and the audio quality is very good, however there is often a delay on the line of about one second and this is quite difficult to get used to (perhaps this delay will not be so bad when calling from the US). Also, the sipphone.com service offers 5 minutes of calls free each day to various countries, very nice, but I have yet to be able to make a free call with them with any client (including their own in WindowsXP).. this may of course change at any time, or be peculiar to my setup, since things in the world of SIP phoning seem pretty volatile.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / kphone won't display on Zaurus X-server
« on: October 25, 2004, 03:39:19 am »
Hi,

I pulled the kphone from the unstable feed because the kphone-pi 0.97 (see above) worked better. However I haven't been able to complete a call to a real phone using the sipphone service. I get all the way to having my home phone ring, answering it  .. then silence and after 30 seconds or so a disconnection.

I am looking into what the problem might be.

I've put up the ipk for kphone-pi on the unstable feed.
I'd be grateful for feedback on what it can and can't do.

I for one appreciate it. I've been waiting for these packages.

Thanks!

Zaurus - pdaXrom / kphone won't display on Zaurus X-server

Hi,

I've built KPhone/Pi 0.9.7, and it seems far better than the kphone 4.04 I built.
Very nice job there.

The kphone I made chopped the first second or so off the audio. I assumed that was the way it was but obviously it was a bug. The fonts and windows are also the right size.

Unfortunately it doesn't make it as far as the 4.04 when making a call to my home phone using the sipphone service. I get an "Connecting your call.." voice but then instead of ringing my phone the "Dial/Disconnect" dialog box vanishes and that's the end of the connection attempt. The output says something like "forced disconnect".

I'll try tomorrow to get it going, it's most likely to be a configuration problem, and I'll pull the 4.04 package from unstable since I realize now it's not working well.

Discovered that Japanese mobile phone headsets although they appear to be just the job are no good. The plug on them is 2.5mm and the Zaurus takes a 3.5mm plug.
I do have an idea or two about what to do. The first one is that it may be possible to use one earphone of a set of headphones as a mic. The second is to use an adapter that connects two mono mics into one 3.5mm stereo jack plug. The third is to solder my own plug onto something.

Anyway, thanks for pointing me to this package.. it seems very promising and hopefully it can be made to work on pdaxrom.

I've built the latest version of k-phone (4.04) and I have the 760 model.

I'm in Japan, so I'm going to get a Japanese mobile phone hands free headset today.
These are supposed to work. I've already signed up to www.sipphone.com

I am not sure how easy it will be to get working though. I am able to place a call though to my home phone.. I get a "we're placing your call now" audio message from sipphone, then my home phone rings, I answer it and there's silence (i.e. speaking into the real phone doesn't result in that speech coming out of the zaurus) for 30 seconds or so, then the call disconnects on both ends.

I guess the good news it that it's looking like a configuration problem rather than a problem with the kphone app.

I've made an ipk and uploaded it to the RC5 unstable feed.
I'd be grateful for any feedback.

Update: kphone is now working on my Zaurus display

I'll sign up for a SIP VoIP service and try to use it to make a real international phone call tomorrow. It looks like I'll be successful, calls to various information lines / echo servers have been working.

kphone rocks on the Zaurus, the windows are nice and small (apart from one configuration dialog box which is manageable).

If it works out I'll put up an ipk on the RC5 unstable feed in the next day or so.

You hit the nail on the head. PC-PC is not so useful (at least to me), but PC-Phone is.

I've never done this, but there seem to be services that allow you to make and receive calls to and from real telephones. The rates seem competitive with callback services.
It seems a very handy capability to have especially when travelling.

Here is a list I found of providers. None are a recommendation in any way since I have yet to use any service.

Have successfully built kphone for RC5.
It runs and worked successfully with the echo server 612@fwd.pulver.com

BUT I was testing it sending the window to another X-server.
When I try to display on the Zaurus X-server, kphone crashes: "Broken pipe".

Any ideas why this might be (the application linked to the X and QT libs)?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Request: Linphone
« on: October 19, 2004, 09:55:17 am »
Hi Dennis,

I just tried the linphonec with the test server that comes with it, and it didn't seem to work properly. It is supposed to ring and play a short announcement. It connected to the test server, rang but seemed to play a silent annoucement.

Did you manage to use it successfully for a VoIP call?

@Xumbi, the headphone socket is either stereo headphones or mono headphones and mono mic. I've been told it works with the hands free mobile phone headsets in Japan (I guess like the one in the link above)

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Request: Linphone
« on: October 18, 2004, 12:12:22 pm »
Hi,

I have built the console version and put it up on the unstable feed.
There are 3 packages to get

linphone
libosip
libogg

It's all yours. It seems to run (starts up loads codecs and gives a prompt), but I have no way of testing it on the task of VoIP phoning myself.

It may be possible to build the version with the GUI, but it needs more work on my part.
If this works I'll give it a go.

Please let me know how you get on with this, and if possible let me have any snippets of configuration file that I can use in the package.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Where is the list of installed packages?
« on: October 15, 2004, 08:24:49 am »
Thanks! I hadn't come across the ipkg-link commands.

I guess the full list of installed packages (for me)  are the packages in both

/usr/lib/ipkg/status
/mnt/card/usr/lib/ipkg/status

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Where do help files go?
« on: October 15, 2004, 01:19:19 am »
I'm making an ipk for the locate command. This is taken from another Zaurus release and is not a port of the linux locate, but a script that produces its own smaller database file.

It comes with a readme file that explains its usage and it would be a shame to exclude it from the ipk, but I have no idea where to put it. Is there a standard place on the pdaxrom distribution?
