Cxx0 General discussions / general c860 questions
« on: November 10, 2004, 11:01:02 pm »
Anybody have a picture showing the C860 with any other PDA's (other then the UX50).  I would like to get some idea of teh size of this thing.  It is comparable to the old Casio EM500, the Tungsten/C, ??!

Does anybody carry it in their shirt pocket, or is it too large and heavy for that.

How bad is the screen outdoors?  Does it have any reflective properties at all, or when you are in sunlight, are you just SOL as far as reading the screen is concerned (aka, the old back lit LCD's like casio had)?

DOes anybody carry their C series around with a Wifi card permanently installed, or does it get in the way.  I had a Tungsten C, and really like the WiFi aspect of it (didn't like the crappy quality control, the poor customer support from tehir regional center in India, the 5 different attempts to get a working model, and the broken screen on the version I finally got).  Now I have a Sony TG50, but I miss the WiFi, and will be looking to upgrade again before the year is out.

Cxx0 General discussions / May be a good time to buy an 860

PriceJapan.com is selling the C860 for $555, including tax, shipping, and insurance.

What advantages are there in buying from Conics (other then a free CF WiFi card, a $75 value)?

I know that conics does the english conversion, but it doesn't sound like this is too difficult of a task, even if you don't read japanese.  Or am I wrong about that?

A microdrive was a killer accessory back when a SD 64 MB or CF 128 MB were $200, and that was the only way to get that kind of storage density in a small form factor for a reasonable price.

Now that you can pick up a CF 2 GB card for $180, or a SD 1 GB card for $90 (2 GB released soon at $190), there is no real good applicaton for a HDD in a handheld.  All you get is a thicker unit, since it will need a larger battery to support the increased load.  The HDD will also make the unit run hotter.

This belongs in the "What were they thinking catagory".

OK, maybe they wanted to score a "First HDD in a PDA" ribbon, but why not strike for the "First cigarette lighter in a PDA" ribbon or something equally as ludicrous.

Of course, the good news is that with a new unit out, maybe the 760/860 price will crash another $100 and make some of us wannabes a Zaurus owner.

I hope Zaurus doesn't switch to PPC or WinCE. I converted (reluctantly) to PalmOS since I couldn't stand the PPC, despite forcing myself to try for 3 years.  With Sony bowing out of the PDA world, PalmOne will probably not offer any form factors that I am interested in (especially with their quality control issues related to the T/C).  Sharp is my next big hope.

Why would a HDD be faster access the RAM or ROM?  It doesn't follow...

Since the $800 is canadian dollars, markedman actually got a decent deal (as decent a deal as you can get when the exchange rate is killing your pocketbook).
