I'm trying to get one from dynamism, but they are not very dynamic in sorting out our order from the UK...

Watch out for this. This may finally be a real Z replacement.

People have discussed here many times building a device to replace the Zaurus.

Here is something which could be the core of it. We just need a few extra components and some nice boxes...

(sorry, still no full bidirectional sync yet)

If you could get that working, I might even buy another Z....

You can either copy the PIM database files - they are compatible.

Yes, I guessed that, thanks - but can you give me a complete list of files which I need to transfer?

Slightly off topic, but...

I have a C860 which I am thinking of replacing by a C3200. Is there any easy way of getting all my contact / calendar / etc information of the C860, and onto the C3200, perhaps via my Mac, using ZMacSync?

Or any other sensible way?

Hi,
it is two months since the last post in this forum so I wonder if there is still any Zaurus user out there who works with a Mac? Or Mac user who works with a Zaurus?

Or is your Zaurus collecting dust while you are waiting for the iPhone (to be opened to 3rd party applications)?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=161143\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

An iPhone is not a Zaurus. It does not run a spreadsheet, nor does it have a keyboard, etc. I certainly will not be buying one.

If Apple were to make a pocket-sized Mac - then I would buy onw tomorrow. But I do not need a phone.

And I am most disappointed that ZMacSync never got completed.

Well, this device is bigger than a Z, but would fit in a big pocket.
Volume wise it's 2.5 times that of the Z and weight wise, Chero says it's more than twice as heavy. How can you compare a device like that to the Z? [div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=160459\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

OK, point taken.

The Sony Vaio isn't it either. The screen is unradable without optical aids (a magnifying glass etc).

Back to the search....

I wish people would stop posting all these Z "replacement" threads. For me the Z is a pocketable device that allows me to run "full-size" "desktop" applications. Anything which is not pocketable and doesn't have a decent keyboard[1] cannot be a potential Z replacement.

Well, this device is bigger than a Z, but would fit in a big pocket. And its keyboard looks at least as good as the Z's.

I agree I want a device I can carry everywhere with me.

Maybe, finally, this really IS the thingy to replace the Zaurus:

Medion are launching a UMPC with keyboard which will be available in the UK
for £800 - not too much more than the Zaurus SL-C860 cost way back when - but only $1000 in the us and €1000 in Europe - we Brits get ripped off again.

VIA C7-M 770ULV 1Ghz processor with 400Mhz bus, 6.5" display 800 x 640, keyboard, 30Gb disk, 768Mb RAM, Wifi g, Bluetooth 2, SD/SD-IO/MMC card reader, Web cam / microphone / speaker, SD Card slot, 2 x USB Port, VGA Port, Firewire port, Vista (OK, there had to be some downside....)

Weighs 740g.

Available "soon"

General Discussion / The Future Of User Interfaces

Still does not beat a keyboard for entering text. I need a PDA where I can enter a lot of text - I use my PDA to carry a lot of data around with me which is constantly being updated.

So, multitouch may be great for some things, but not everything.

have a look at project lookingglass

It's just that, a project, not the underpinning of a current operating system.

I'm not saying this sort of thing is not possible. I am just saying that current OSes do not fully support resolution independence. And until they do, too many pixels on a small screen becomes illegible. I was seriously thinking of buying a Sony Vaio to replace my Zaurus until I tried it and found it to be completely unusable because the user interface was unreadable.

I always see people complaining about too many resolution for a small screen; that's a wrong statement:

1) screen resolution, the more, the better (well maybe not but because of power requirements)

2) another issue is the font you use to display text, menus, ... which in moder UI is completely adjustable, so you can get your apps show at the size you want

So please, never complain about too much resolution and learn how to make your UI fonts at the proper size your eyes need !!
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=159792\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

In principle for (1) you are right. Agreed.

For (2), I know of NO modern operating system where you can change the onscreen resolution (i.e. you can tell the system I have x pixels per inch, please draw things accordingly). It is NOT just the font, but the size of the menubar, buttons, and all UI elements. There is some talk of resolution independence in Leopard, to some degree. I can see NO controls in Vista or Linux to tell the whole system of the dpi resolution.
