6000 - Tosa / Should I Open My New Sl-6000l?
« on: October 29, 2005, 02:18:18 pm »
first, let me say, the sl6000 is a great little machine. it's about everything you'd want in a pda imo. my only wish for it is, as you may agree, that sharp had made it a clamshell w/a keyboard, not a thumboard. i confess here that i am probably older than the typical user and have not developed the thumboarding dexterity
that those who have grown up w/ such devices have. aside from the fumble finger aspect of using the sl6000 keyboard, the worry for me is that when you uncover the keyboard, the cover is left in what appears to me to be a state entirely too vulnerable to damage. i would have preferred it to be removable and not just precariously attached by a minimal grip on the end of its slide mechanism. i say this not so much by way of discouragement to you, but to offer input to your evaluation of how the sl6000 will fare in the universe of your own everyday usage.
the separate keyboard is a possibility; i tried one and couldn't get it going, but others work fine. this becomes a matter of dealing w/ two pieces of hardware rather than one. i do hear that the ir boards can be problematic in maintaining a line of sight for the transmission, but the usb thing ought to solve that(i have a rubber usb almost full sized board that i am trying to get working now; at least i can roll it up and carry it without much hassle).
the clamshell part of my desire for a better sl6000 results from my observation that the plastic protective screen cover is, like the keyboard cover, severely exposed to damage possibility when flipped up for screen access. this situation wouldn't be near the worry to me that  it is if i could find a replacement source- i'd just get two or three and forget about it.
this decision on your part seems to come down to how you will use the machine in your actual physical handling of it and what sort of treatment it is likely to encounter during your usage. it's a lttle larger than most pdas, and i haven't found a suitable case for it(one that let's me attach it securely and safely to my body), but i love it as i do the psion for its versatility and its way cool factor. my best to you.

6000 - Tosa / Addressbook Backup
« on: July 25, 2005, 02:20:53 pm »
where is the addressbook data file on the 6000(i'd like to keep a backup off the machine)?
what options do i have for encryption(that work on the 6000) or password locking of individual apps? i have JCryptPad, but the ipk doesn't seem to have been for the 6000 as i can get my data back, but it appears in what i believe is cyrillic characters(the numbers i can get, but the text is tough).
thanks for any help or direction from you guys.

6000 - Tosa / Why Is The Sl-6000 More Expensive Than The Sl-5500
« on: July 12, 2005, 01:28:56 am »
if you can get a new 6000 for $500, i think i'd do it. it's just about the total package; only thing i would have done would be to make it a clamshell so you could have a convenient keyboard and better protection for the screen. it is a commercial type apparatus in size and ruggedness, and i don't think that turns on the trendies who comprise the mass market, hence sharp probably didn't see a big profit potential. can't beat it as a "personal mobile tool", though.

General Discussion / Public Domain Movies For The Z
« on: February 05, 2005, 04:31:36 am »
i believe the www.archive site has a movie that is taken from a streetcar in san francisco as it crosses town in 1905-one year before the big quake-it's a pretty nice piece of historical data-the driving behaviors and animal-internalcombustion propulsion mix is interesting along with plain old watching dead men walking.

Linux Issues / Export Display To Zaurus
« on: February 01, 2005, 05:38:46 am »
the xapps weren't running on the Z-the gray screen was there, but nothing would connect to the server(locally or remote). i originally installed xqt-server 1.9 from sourceforge.jp along with the other pkgs required according to the debian pocket workstation site . i read adf's post and removed xqt 1.9 and put in 0.10. i also added /opt/qtpalmtop/bin to my path and now i can start the xqt server and then i can start rxvt or blackbox from a terminal-i get locale missing messages and the geometry is not right, but that might be tweakable. still no startx, which i believe would let me start up blackbox concurrently(would like to be able to do all this w/o a terminal running-i guess that means an icon on the Apps page; more i need to learn. i do appreciate all of your input here as i really like this machine. it's like what my psion series 5 would be with current tech, though i think the psion's flip open design w/nice little keyboard was the real deal-that with the z's power and screen would beyond rock. well, it's back to tinkering.

Linux Issues / Export Display To Zaurus
« on: January 31, 2005, 04:19:17 am »
thank you guys. i have turned access control off on tincat1, but still have probs. i'm not sure i have X installed properly on the Z since i can't get any xapps to open on the Z-i get the xscreen, but twm, etc. say they can't connect to the xserver(this is with Xqt running-startx crashes quick. i'm going to poke around and see if i can't find a way to startx w/twm or blackbox. any thoughts appreciated.

thanks, lardman, i appreciate the timeliness of your reply. i got and installed X on the Z and it seems to work-i ssh into tincat1(the slackbox) with
"ssh -X  -l dp 192.168.1.101" and then "export DISPLAY=192.168.1.101:0"; then, when i attempt an xapp, i get "Xlib: connection to 192.168.1.101 refused by server" and "Xlib: no protocol specified". do i need to enable X-fowarding somewhere as well as authorize the Z to do so, and do i use a display different from the one tincat1 uses or do i use another screen. also to what protocol does the second message refer.
i again thank you for any thoughts you may offer here as i am just trying to muddle through. by the way, what's a good window manager for X on Z?
