Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Allo Coredump
« on: December 30, 2004, 05:00:59 pm »
Absolutely

I vote for:

Konquerer ( I see some people got Opera embedded working)
Gaim without a broken MSN - or another way to use msn, such as msn2go
Frodo - maybe...
Zmame

...?
I'm not even sure whats out there as the filenames are pretty cryptic sometimes

maybe Samba client so I can see / mount my winxp directories.. hmm

Its up to you Coredump - anyone else have suggestions? I've got to run off to work..

Hey Coredump

I see there is another update on your site for the sl5500 rom, the last one from a few days back broke wireless, but I've been messing with the Z here and there.
The wireless card sometimes shows up as an anonymous memory card, so I have to eject the card and reinsert it for it to work. This is what happened on your first release, your second release completly fixed it, but it seems to be back now.
Basically it seems to work, locks into my network, even with WEP. but as soon as I connect to the package manager or anything requiring a net connection, it drops the connection, its like the card shuts off.

Could you include some more packages in your next release kind sir?

A web browser
Snes9x, mame, frodo (game type stuff) - maybe incorporate the script and front end to make the rom builds from a recent posting here.

codecs for mplayer (xvid/3vix/divx/.avi)
xmms works very well for mp3s, but i understand it can be used as a front end for mplayer?

I kinda got some wmv to work, but the framerate is about 1/2 and the voice is way out of sync, although the voice is not choppy at all.

Whats the best way you would choose to install these new roms, how would I wipe out the sd card to flash as I don't want my changes interrupting your ' clean ' rom and cardfs, perhaps you could put a requestor in to format the card before the install of the apps happens?

You're probably a really busy guy, but you've made serious inroads into this Z - thanks for all the work

Cheers,

Thats a great tip Teletubbie,

And.. being the brash - non caring guy that I am, I did it without reflashing

The Z seems to have moved the directories, i'm up to 276kb of free space now, and, oddly I have 3 entries in system info/storage for the sd card.

Too bad Gaim doesn't work properly, is there a workaround at all? could we maybe use msn2go as a java applete?

Now.. samba.. time to hack away at that for a bit.....

HI Digichris, thanks for the welcome.

The last week has been fun, I flashed my Z with 3.5.2 and ran into a boatload of trouble with it, wierd lockups that required tha battery to be removed, general freezing. Absolutely nothing would install from the package manager and i was getting a little frustrated (after 12 hours of playing with the Z)

The I saw a link to Hentges rom, its a custom rom built off of 3.5.2 with a cardfs file and about 30 megs of applications/libraries pre-installed. The first version RC5 had a couple issues with my wireless, but the master Hentges fixed that up and since RC7 which was released a day later my wireless netgear ma701na is working near perfectly - with the addition of his cardfs file and the libraries already installed, i'm able to install applications without much problem now from the opie feed, and have been wirelessly chatting / browsing with it.

I'm running out of space on root though, even though I'm installing everything to /mnt/card (SD) I think I'm down to 192bytes atm. Is it possible to do the 64-0 script ? Or does that need to be done with the cacko rom?

A couple small twitches now, MSN is not working quite right in gaim, although icq and irc connect fine. MSN just doesn't connect at all, and with no error message to guide me, .. well....

I Installed opie-mediaplayer2 as well which I believe is built off of Xine? The installer made a nice icon for me, it doesn't launch, and running it from the command line states it cannot initialize a window - so at least there I have something to go by.

So much thanks to Hentges, I'm really getting to know the Z over the past week, its pretty crazy what this little 5500 has the capabilities to do - a computer in my hand.... time to get some emulators going

Btw Digichris - thats 210 cdn

Hey Again Coredump

- I installed RC7 on the Z as soon as you'd posted, a great build and it fixes my wireless problem. I was able to see my access point, and now that its set its coming up everytime (including 64bit wep).

I've been able to install several applications from the opie feed, wireless webbrowse, can chat on icq and irc accounts, MSN doesn't want to connect at all, and there is no error message ?

I'm also dangerously running out of space on /root (down to 192bytes) - does the 64-0 script work to copy my /root and /opt to my sd card? ( I don't know how it works)...

Konquerer installed, it did complain about the qreo (?) problem >4 that people are seeming to have, but I installed it and an icon showed up when i did a force dependancy.

xmms seems to work, it won't play a URL (or i havn't got it to yet) and I need to install ftp or samba so I can get some files over to it for local testing.

sooooo... can you give me a hint on :
A: what to free up on my Z /root for space or hints on how to get to 64/0
B: the trick with MSN - does this version of msn work?

Coredump - you da best   '

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Oz 3.5.2 Installed
« on: December 08, 2004, 10:50:11 am »
Thanks for the replies guys - Pedro I installed Hentges rom last night, and besides 2 little bugs I have. I think it almost should be the official rom

My Z is a lot happier now.

so only 2 little wierd quirks - dealing with wireless networking on my netgear ma701na, but i'll figure it out.

With Hentges rom and the SD install, I'm way ahead of where i was yesterday.

cheers,

Allo Coredump !

You're my new hero, after spending 12 hours yesterday and not able to install anything, I decided to try your rom and sd setup.

Scared the heck outta myself, and thought i'd bricked the Z, because I flashed the Z with an empty card

So after copying your 3 files to my cf, flash, it came up and is working great. Everything got installed very nicely, having it in german kind of threw me, but my trusty translator got it figured out.

2 things though are throwing me off.

1: My cf wireless netgear ma701na card is being recognized as an ' anonymous memory card ' by the Z, does this have something to do with one of your init scripts? I have to eject it, then replug it for the Z to recognize it as a wireless CF - Its being used as a ZCOMAX AirRunner/XL-300 and seems to be working.

However,

2: I cannot seem to get into a network properties dialog where I can specify the wireless settings for channel, ssid etc, I click on the network settings and can only either ' bring up ' or set/unset dhcp. Can I set this information manually in /etc/ somewhere?

Marvelous work Coredump, My Z came -->this<-- close to landing on the road outside.

Cheers,

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Oz 3.5.2 Installed
« on: December 08, 2004, 01:15:43 am »
Well..

I -very carefully- flashed my z 5500 to oz 3.5.2 30/30 this morning around 10am.
Here it is 12 hours later and I havn't been able to install anything. - nothing, and I'm not trying to install anything exotic, i'm following the docs on these forums just to get konquerer running.

Nada.. zip-zero-nilch. I do have a 512 meg lexar sd card in /mnt/card which is ext2 fs.

Been reading the forums all day long - there are just way too many dependancies with this flavor of linux. The package manager is near useless as it won't resolve dependancies and  the Z hangs way too much.. I've had to cold start it several times today. Including taking out the battery - it all happens when trying to use the package manager files sort of try to install to SD but then the Z hangs and thats it. - sometimes I can restart opie, most times I have to shut the Z down completely.

Since these units are almost nearly identicle why isn't there a binaries repository ?

Please don't say rtfm, i'm a unix geek and a solaris/linux guy, this Z is about 2 steps from becoming chucked off my deck. This is way too much work to get a PDA functional.

Now OZ 3.5.2 itself is very nice, it recognized my Netgear MA701NA wireless card, its on the network, i can ping out from the Z and have been futzing around with command line ipk but I can't make this thing install.

I almost had frodo installed, but it crashed on a dependancy and the file won't execute.

Dead Z? Bad flash? OZ just way too experimental? - I appreciate all the work the OZ team has put into this replacement rom, their work is fantastic. but the roms a little empty.

Cheers all.. Onetrack

Hiya all,

I've been reading this forum for the past few days after stumbling onto it from a google search.

I'm soon to be the owner of a never used zaurus sl 5500, my wife picked it up on ebay for me as a gift (ive been bugging her for one for the past 3 years.. she finally understands)

My main uses for the new unit will be very light surfing, chatting mostly (is there a VoIP app such as skype?). I'll be using gaim to connect to my msn/icq/irc accounts, some very light email and probably some warwalking. I have a CF wireless card on order from my local computer shop

When i'm just laying on the couch i wouldn't mind a game or two, probably mame or some such.

btw here is the ebay win, good price ?

EBAY ZAURUS

What I would like to install on this new toy is:

Kismet
Gaim
Zmame
Konquerer embedded
a PIM/Calendar app
Java (Jeode?)
ssh/scp/ftp/telnet (i will have so much fun with this playing nethack or mudding)
some console apps, maybe lynx/links
Nomachine client (??)

I'm pretty sure from the ebay description that this will be a bone-stock / never used before device, probably running the earliest sharp rom there is.

Little background on me, I've been a unix sysadmin (solaris certified), played with various linux's, hp/ux and irix too. At the moment I have a WinXP box and a Suse 9.1 pro box, and I'm using NoMachine on suse as the server. I'd like to be wandering around my livingroom connected to suse.

SO.... before I run out of breath and bore you all (just excited i finally get to join the zaurus owners guild)......

Which Rom is for me?
Would a Lexar SD ram card (never intending on taking it out) be a good choice?
Can I use the zaurus while its docked or is there a wall socket adapter, as i understand it this device will suck its battery dry pretty quickly when Wlanning....

Cheers all,
Onetrackio (btw.. anyone want to donate me a c860 for testing?)
