For Sale / Wanted / Fs: Zaurus 6000 In London, Uk
« on: September 06, 2005, 09:44:32 am »
This is a Zaurus 6000 bought in December this past year and imported into the UK.  Everything is in great shape; and includes the manual, CD, cradle, etc.  It is the normal Sharp power supply and it works fine as it is worldwide 110-240V.

Right now I'm just looking to find out if anyone in the UK is interested in purchasing it.  I would not like to part with it until after Oct 1 (when I should have my new Z

If you're interested, make an offer.  Otherwise it'll likely end up on ebay.

cheers
byz

6000 - Tosa / Zaurus 6000 / USB HOST / IPOD

The iPod does support USB-host but it has to be software enabled by the connecting device.  In other words, I don't believe you can you just plug it in and see it... sorry

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Howto: Oz 3.5.2 On Sl-6000l

I'm not using any usb host hardware -are modules something in the software I can disable?  I don't get the wireless hang-up on my Sharp ROM.  Sometimes after a suspend, the Sharp ROM won't reconnect, but it's as easy to fix as hitting the little connect button at the bottom.

Oh well, I do really like Opie and OZ, so maybe I need to teach this dog .. er cat   some new tricks, and learn to do a ifdown before a suspend

Are any of you having trouble with wi-fi after your Zaurus goes to sleep?  If I haven't done a ifdown wlan0 before it goes into suspend, then when it wakes up again and I do a ifup wlan 0, I get:

ifup wlan0
ok.
wlanctl-ng: No such device
Failed to enable the device, exitcode= 1.
run-parts: /etc/network/if-pre-up.d/wlan-ng exited with return code 1: Success

But it's far from successful   Only a reboot will let me do a ifup wlan0 and be wireless again.

Any ideas?

6000 - Tosa / OpenZaurus, OZ on the 6000
« on: January 15, 2005, 01:15:11 pm »
Well, I took the plunge and installed OZ with the Opie image

I found it really quite straightforward to install - with the included instructions on http://openzaurus.org.  After installing it, I need to say it's faster, the gui is more polished, the included apps are more comprehensive, than the standard Sharp ROM.  I don't use PIM apps much, so ymmv.

Anyway, while it is a development build, it not as unusable as you might think from reading this thread.  Wireless was the most difficult thing to get working - after fiddling about for an hour, I've got a setup.  Details at https://www.oesf.org/forums/inde...indpost&p=62654

I installed and am happy with Opera6, Konsole, and opieftp.  There seem to be a lot of great utilities for opie.

Anyway I have a few questions / problems:
1. Can i reconfigure power manager so it doesn't sleep as quickly with battery?

2. I can't get open-tetrix to work -- after install, clicking on the icon from the desktop causes a "could not locate application tetrix" error

3. How do I send control characters to the console?

4. I think the install is 32-32 (mnt/ram).  Is there a way to reconfigure this 64-0 in the future?  Or is there a reason for the 32-32?

5. All the games have really small displays - like pacman, solitaire, word game, etc.  Is there any way to increase the screen size before I go blind?

I've got wireless working with OZ 3.5.2 and my Apple Airport.  I'm using 40-bit encryption, though I think this will work fine with 128-bit encryption.

Here's the settings I used:

auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wireless_nick zaurus
wireless_enc on
wireless_type wlan_ng
wireless_mode Managed
wlan_ng_key0 XX:XX:XX:XX:XX

where XX:XX:XX:XX is your 40-bit wep key for the Airport

The 'auto waln0' will start up your wireless after a reboot automatically.

I couldn't get wlan_ng_priv_genstr <password> to work either

If you are in /mnt/cf, or already chrooted and are in /, then ln -s root home/root, as in the wiki, wil work just fine

6000 - Tosa / Weak Antenna On 6k Internal Wireless?
« on: January 11, 2005, 01:07:33 pm »
FWIW, I've been trying to tune my wireless reception too.

I usually use the Zaurus in the 90 degrees counterclockwise rotation (i.e. the hidden keyboard would be in my right hand, and the top of the display in my left)

Did you know that the Network Settings application has a Current Tab that can show you your signal strength and quality in real time?

I usually get about 40-60% signal strength from about 5-8 metres from my Apple Airport base station.  Right next to the station, I get 100%.

I have noticed that if my right hand is over the keyboard area, that I get a 15-20% drop in signal strength.  The antenna is where my left hand would be in hatchetman's pic.

If I rotate the screen to the vertical mode, I get a different set of numbers, usually a bit stronger -- but the vertical mode isn't great for reading web pages!

So it looks like your Zaurus can have a weaker signal from the effects of your hands and how you're using it.  Try it.

Smuelas,

Yep, I do have a 6000, and just one

Perhaps I've done the install wrong, because I'm still having problems suspending and restarting.  After a reboot, and mount -t /proc again, everything is fine.

I'm looking forward to your new webpage!

thanks, byz

General Discussion / Solar Chargers

I think it would be pretty useful for my iPod on a several day hiking trip   of course if you take it along, you'll get cloudy weather for sure

Solio -- a solar charger for iPods, phones, and some PDAs.  Looks pretty neat.

Anyone know of solar chargers that work with Zs?  Do all Zs have the same ac adaptor tip style?

Hi Smuelas, I'm using the Wiki instructions for X/Qt on Debian.  Is there a way to suspend and reactivate at the command line from within Debian?

Has anyone else been having problems with their CF after suspending and awakening their zaurus?

I close Pocket Workstation before putting my 6000 to sleep.  However, every time I wake it up, Pocket Workstation won't launch.  I've tried ejecting the CF and reinserting it, and even mounting the cf flash again.  However, nothing seems to work except a reboot.

This makes it a little annoying

If you see a previous post from hatchetman,
>apt-get install locales
will fix the error with LANG and LC_ALL

When you ap-get install it, you will be asked to choose some default locales.  There are several hundred to choose from.  English comes in a variety of flavours, but English US: en_US.ISOXXXX seems to be the most popular choice.
