Angstrom & OpenZaurus / openzaurus 3.3.5 available

I\'ve been thinking of maybe just using the Sharp one, and then customizing it, like startup screens, screensaver, background, theme, etc. That might work well.

yep, that\'s exactly what i\'ve done to it so far.  i\'ve tried all these new ROMs as they come out, and have had very limited success with all of them except the Sharp ROM.

Inuyasha ,
i\'ve had the exact same problems on my 5600.  the initrd.bin file that OZ supplies left my Z loading indefinitely.  the sharp initrd froze or disabled the screen after all was said and done.

and, as for your question about which 5600 ROM is the best?  i\'ve been plenty happy with the Sharp ROM with the appropriate libraries installed.

Accessories / C760 - Linksys WCF12 Wireless CompactFlash Card works.

When I start kismet this scheme is activated and when quitting kismet it is changed back.

i\'m using the same card with Kismet on a 5500.  i\'m learning linux more as i go, and just made two shell scripts-- one that makes the card look for a network continually, and one that turns it off, both using schemes.  how do you have it set up to do this automatically when running Kismet?  it would save me quite a few clicks and button presses when going wardriving!

Software / Tips on Kismet on C760???
« on: November 12, 2003, 12:04:22 am »
this seems to be a common issue with kismet and the zaurus.  although, i guess it would be since \"cannot connect to server\" seems to be the single error message that kismet has.

hopefully this helps you out:

5x00 Hardware / Scratches on the display getting worse...

You\'re most likely not a careless Z owner, as it\'s not necessarilly your fault: http://www.nushield.com/news_articles_styl...ylus_damage.htm.

I\'ve been using some cheap WriteRights until I get my hands on a good screen cover.  You\'re right about the air bubbles and there is a bit of lost sensitivity in the screen, but it\'s better than permenantly messing up the Z screen, and if you take your time you can keep the bubbles at a minimum.  I\'d recommend picking something like that up for the time being.  In the next couple of days http://www.pda-now.com will start selling some reusable screen protectors that use a very mild adhesive that are really nice (a friend of mine has one for his iPaq 2210 and it\'s great).

Anyway... I\'ve sent the guy who runs the site the dimensions of the Z SL-5500/5600 screen, and he said it\'d only be a day or two until he gets them ready to be sold.

Software / Kismet-qt and sound...
« on: November 03, 2003, 09:17:23 pm »
I am trying to set up Kismet to make a sound whenever a new network is detected, and no matter what I do, it remains silent.  I\'ve edited the kismet.conf file the kismet_ui.conf file and checked the \"Beep on New\" check box in Kismet-QT.  I just downloaded the \"buzzme\" file from a site about Kismet as an addon for Kismet to make sound... but no luck there, either.

Does anybody have any idea how to get this to work... it\'s hard (and somewhat dangerous) to drive about and constantly look at the Z to determine if a new network has been found.  Much easier to have it beep at me

I dont know how to tell it to execute with root privilege.

just hold the stylus on the icon for kismet for a few seconds to bring up the properties, and check the box to run with root privilege.  also, if you go into the console and type \"su\" and then your zaurus passcode as your password you can try running \"kismet_server\" and see if that works.

Software / Kismet

i\'ve had that problem too... it seems to be kismet\'s one and only complaint, and is not really indicative of what the problem is.  if you\'ve changed the location of the log file, for instance, and the location you specified is not valid, you will get the \"can\'t connect to server\" problem.

also, i\'m not sure what kind of card you\'re using (prism2 or other) but have you tried setting the card type to either of those?  at one point, i had to tell kismet i was running OpenZaurus, hit restart, and then switch back to SharpROM for it to work correctly.  try running kismet_server from the command line (su to root first)... if that works, set the properties for kismet to \"execute with root privilege.\"  you can also try overwriting all the files with a new install of kismet \"ipkg install -force-overwrite <package>\" and then run it with a virgin kismet.conf file to see if it works.

and, you have installed both kismet and kismet_qt, right?

i have done all of these things, and one of them always works, while none of them always works... follow?

Software / IPKG-new for 5600 download?
« on: October 13, 2003, 09:46:56 pm »
i\'ve been trying to get my hands on the new IPKG-new for the Z, and on the main software page (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/) the link seems to be broken.  apart from flashing to the zynergy ROM on this site, anybody know of how i might go about getting the IPKG-new package so i can install some of the opie software i can\'t install until OZ gets a bit more polished up?

Accessories / GPS for 5600
« on: October 13, 2003, 09:38:32 pm »
yes, thanks... as it turns out, that episode of the screensavers was how i even found out about the 5600.  a week and a half later of research on the device, and i was a proud owner of one.  unfortunately, they never mention GPS devices to work with Kismet as far as mapping AP\'s goes.

i ended up getting a linksys 802.11b CF card for mine, though, as it happened to be drastically reduced with instant rebates and the like.  i have an inverter in my car, so having a low power wLAN card like the one he mentioned wasn\'t really a concern.

well... the search continues... what GPS to use along with my CF card?

i\'m trying to determine what would be a decent GPS to use for wardriving with my 5600.  the lower the price, the better

i\'ve done some reading on a Radio Shack Digitraveler GPS mouse that looks like it\'ll work fine with the appropriate adapter.  has anybody had any experience with this or any others on the Zaurus?  and advice will be greatly appreciated...

edit: i\'d like it to leave my CF slot open, as i do need it for my 802.11b card

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / OZ on 5600
« on: October 06, 2003, 03:34:07 pm »
well, i tried it and it works great... except for two \"small\" problems.  1)Konquerer doesn\'t work; and 2)the opie package installer doesn\'t work.

so... now, i\'m back with sharp\'s rom, until OZ becomes official, i guess... or, can anybody suggest a different rom to use that will work on the 5600?

also... i\'m not really sure how to go about flashing v3.2 and then adding the poodle version as a feed, etc.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / OZ on 5600
« on: October 06, 2003, 12:54:46 am »
just got my 5600 2 days ago, and am loving the thing... except that i want to run OZ on it.

i\'ve managed to find a download for it... but, naturally, i\'m hesitant to try it out.  i was wondering if anybody else has given it a go, or if anybody knows of any issues with this build-- http://openzaurus.org/unofficial/experimental/poodle/

i have no real problem running experimental stuff, as long as i know it\'s not completely terrible.  i don\'t want to turn my handy little zaurus into a very expensive brick...

hehe... and, i guess, if i do manage to render the zaurus unbootable, is there any way to flash back to the Shap ROM using a CF?
