I guess I will give Angsrom a try and see what happens!!

if you take a NAND backup, you can go back to pdaXrom without any hassle.

Thanks. That's gonna be the project for this weekend. Hopefully most of things will work out of box.

For past 2,3 years I have been using PDAXRom 1.1 Beta2 on my lovely Tosa. It does everything I need it to do: play mp3 and avi, light browsing, abiword, dictionary, and viewing pdf.

I was so afraid to broke my perfectly tweaked ROM and I stopped doing any update at all. After all those time, I finally decided to move on and started experimenting again.

I guess I will give Angsrom a try and see what happens!!

no that I had a little trouble to build beta3 using this. (you need to replace the iconf.h from the native i686 toolchain with the one form the arm toolchain you build)

but it should be fine if you use the sdk, not that you should be able to use any linux distro to use the sdk.

Thanks.  I have been trying desperately to build pdaXrom for 6000.  I first tried Beta1 using the iso and the last builder for beta1, but I run into xkbcomp problem I posted in a different thread.

I then tried Beta4 and Beta3, but none finished building the rom.  I really want to get the pdaXrom building 6000, but it's not looking too good so far.  I have read the cross-compile how-to in mentioned in this thread, played with OpenEmbedded, and done some work with crosstool for TI OMAP, but none required XFree.  XFree is giving me quiet a lot of grief when compiling.

Anyonoe know a good XFree86 cross compile tutorial?
Thanks.

Can someone post a link to the VMWare image?  I can't seem to find it on the pdaxrom.com website.

Thanks.

I see you mentioned watching video on your 6000 in pdaxrom.  Would you mind explaining your setup.  I have done that with success on the sharp rom but I cant seem to get much to work on the pdaxrom side.

Thanks

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Xkpcomp
« on: May 22, 2006, 11:15:15 pm »
Hello,

I have been using pdaXrom on Zaurus 6000 for almost a year.  Recently, I decided to spend some of my time trying to participate the development process of pdaXrom.

The first thing I decided to try is to build pdaXrom on my own.  I found several how-to and posts on such topic.  After following the instruction, I was able to get the toolchain build.  I gladly moved along to building the actual Rom.  However, I have been stuck with xkbcomp.

Specifically, the builder would die in directory linking all object files into "xkbcomp" in directory "/xc/programs/xkbcomp/cross".  It printted out error message -lxkbfile is missing.

So I thought to myself, "this is easy, all I have to do is find the correct share object and modify the Makefile".  After using the "file" command, it shows me that all object files are i386 files.  So I tried to find the libxkbfile.so.... in the host system.  But it's no where to be found!!

So here is my question:
1. Why is it trying to build the binary for i386 instead of arm architecture?
2. How do I get around it?

Thanks.

How's the overall speed of pdaxrom compared to a ROM like Sharp or OZ?

Can you play movies fullscreen using mplayer in pdaxrom, or does it suffer from the same video acceleration issues as the other ROMs?

Is there any good PIM software, or does the K/Pi suite work just as well?

What's the deal with WiFi and Bluetooth? Is the reconition of the 6000's built-in WiFi flaky? Is Bluetooth working as good as or better than the Sharp-based ROMs?

I'd really appreciate it if you could answer all those. I'm dying to ditch the Sharp ROM for something as beautiful as E17, but stability, speed and hardware integration have kept me from pdaxrom so far.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=127380\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I am no sure what was the acceleration issues in other ROMS.  My experience with Open Zaurus and PDAX ROM is that if a movie is re-encoded to 320x240 with 15 fps, it can be play full screen without dropping any frame and audio/video out of sync.  There is a program I found in OESF forum that I use to re-encode my XVID movies for Zaurus. I can lookup the name of program later tonight when I get home.

I have the PIM software installed, but never really used it much.  So I can't really help you on that.

Wifi works ok, but I use a script instead of the GUI.  I couldn't get the Wifi GUI to work.  My Zaurus is without Bluetooth; can't give you any pointer on that.

I forget to mention few other programs I use frequently on PDAX rom in my last post:

GAIM:  I consistently log onto msn and yahoo messenger to take a look on who's online.  Witout an external keyboard, it's hard to carry out conversations on Zaurus.

KPHONE:  I use KPHONE to dial toll free number for internation calling cards during the day when my cell phone minutes are low.  Some phone card does not recognize the DTMF send by KPHONE, overall experience is still positive though.  Voice call through SIP woks decently well.

xvncview and server: I find xvncviewer less useful when connect to a Windows vnc server, but it works well with Linux vnc server if you set the resolution usable for Zaurus.  xvnc server works pretty well.  I use it pretty often when I am at home on my real computer.

xpdf: I rarely use it unless, but the times I used it to read pdf e-books, it works fine.

Here is my conclusion for PDAX rom:

I think it's a pretty decent ROM.  It requires some tweaking and getting use to when first used.  I think the first thing you need to do AFTER installing PDAX rom is to get the libstdc++ library.  I am not sure if it's the case anymore.

I love the customisibility and versatility it gives me at the expense of some learning curve.  If you have some experience with desktop Linux I would highly recommend giving PDAX rom a try if and only if you have some free time.

e17 on Zaurus 6000 looks pretty sweet!!

I got my Zaurus back in 2004.  I used OpenZaurus for about a year until one day that I decided that the orange line really annoys me and switched to PDAX rom.

I run PDAX rom as my daily rom now.  I primarily uses fluxbox, Firefox, Minimo (scaled down version of FireFox) , AbiWord, mplayer, xmms, and qbedict.
Here are some of my experiences from PDAX rom.

Firefox:  Takes roughly a minute to load, once loaded it works great.

Minimo: Runs great, tries to render everything so that you don't have to scroll horizontally.  But its effort sometimes actually screws up the page.  It's kind of buggy.

Abiword: I use it to take notes when I am reading.

Qbedict: I use it to look up words I don't know when I am reading.  It's usually run in conjunction with Abiword in different "workspace" of Fluxbox.

mplayer:  I used mplayer to watch re-encoded xvid movies when I need to take flights.  No complains here.  I also use it to play online streamed NPR.

xmms:  Works great.

I pretty much use PDAXrom as a scale down version of Linux PC and NOT a pda.  This factor alone makes the transition to PDAXrom worth it.  The only draw back I have with PDAX rom is that there's not much development for Zaurus 6000.  I personally wish I have more time to do some development on it, but just don't have time.

6000 - Tosa / In Car Z6000 Holder
« on: December 16, 2004, 02:05:25 pm »
hi,

I am thinking about using my Z6000 in car for playing mp3 and other possible uses, such as navigation system.

Does anyone know any PDA accessory that will Zaurus securely?  I haven't found anything designed for Z6000, but something similar to this will do the trick:

Thanks.

Micro$oft's goal is to get their shiteware running on as much hardwarae as possible, whoever makes it.
I doubt it's Microsoft's goal to get ther shiteware running on as much hardware as possible.  Ever since they stop the support for Alpha, have you see them releasing OS for platform other than x86 and arm?

Just like any other business, making as much money as possible is their goal.

Software / Mplayer Audio (mp3) Does Not Work On 6000l
« on: December 13, 2004, 11:35:43 pm »
I found the solution to my own problem.  I hope it would be helpful for other:

mplayer needs to use libmad to decode mp3.  And by default, it uses mp3lib.
I doubt mp3lib is available  for  Opie.

Code: [Select]
-ac mad
was all I needed.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Mpg123 On Opie: No Default Libao Driver Available.

hi all,

I have been having problem playing mp3 from the text mode.
Both mpg123 and mpg321 gives me the same problem:

  "No default libao driver available.'"

However, xmms works fine.  Has anyone run into similar on Opie.

btw, I have a  6000L.

Thanks.

Software / Mplayer Audio (mp3) Does Not Work On 6000l
« on: December 11, 2004, 02:59:17 am »
hi all

I am still a newbie when it comes to Zaurus.  Please forgive me if this question is stupid.  I have been trying to set up mplayer for past 2 days.

From the research that I have done,  I can play the video well enough with  -vo fbdev -dr -framedrop.

But mplayer just refuse to make any sound from the speaker.  According to mplayer it is playing the audio stream, but there is no sound coming out from the speaker.  I haved tried -ao sdl/oss/esd...  And still no sound.

Please give me some suggestion
