Looks interesting. Not feeling like "risking" $500 though, personally.
Looks like a rebadged Sharp/Wilcomm D4 or psiXpda (very similar to D4) to me.

Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker / Enabling Existing Drivers
« on: July 26, 2010, 01:27:46 pm »
IIRC the Netwalker uses wicd as network manager. You probably have to change its configuration as it normally looks for eth0, the internal WiFi. You have to change that to ra0 instead, options defining which interface to use as wired/wireless are in its settings.

Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker / Mini-usb As Lan Connection
« on: July 19, 2010, 05:09:54 am »
The Netwalker's mini USB port is a standard host port, used to connect any USB device with the right connector (or an adaptor).

You can try to establish a USB TCP/IP connection using either port, but I don't think the Netwalker will do this automatically.

I am quite sure he is referring to Pulster

Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker / Which Internet Browser Are You Using?
« on: June 19, 2010, 02:21:35 pm »
I used Midori. Was stable enough here. Some crashes occasionally but I seem to get that with any Midori version. I remember it being faster than Firefox and not as heavy on resources.

Have you tried e.g. epiphany-webkit? For some sites a text-based browser might be enough. It doesn't get any more lightweight than that

Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker / How To: Restore Your Netwalker Pc-z1
« on: June 17, 2010, 05:25:12 am »
I just checked out your link -- the file size tells it contains all the files necessary to recover the OS, without having to download from the slow original server. Well done!

It's worth mentioning the script will erase the microSD card so make sure there's nothing important on it anymore

Hello all,

i'm trying to change the screen resolution to the sharp netwalker to be able to run a program which its maximun resolution is 640*400 in the full screen (Now it run in a window, but is really little). Can anybody help me?

Regards
Hello,

did you look in the settings? There may be a Display panel. I don't have my Netwalker anymore (long story...) so can't check. If such a panel is missing, you may have to edit/create xorg.conf accordingly.

I also tried xrandr for some on-the-fly modifications (namely to create a virtual screen with panning) but it wouldn't work. If it did it would be a nice option to quickly change the resolution.

Hope this helps!

Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker / Which Window Manager Do You Use?
« on: June 06, 2010, 02:27:32 pm »
I happily used LXDE and got the NetworkManager working by copying its .desktop file to the autostart directory and editing it to be executed in LXDE.

I was going to try pure Openbox and evilwm too but then sold my Netwalker (long story).

It will be so slow if it worked there would not even be a point. Running dosbox on the zaurus is even slowed down a little.

Why would you want to run such a crappy OS on a very small/old/slower device anyway?

I have a multitude of PortableApps on the CF card and it would be a great convenience to use them on the Zaurus.
Since they are compiled for x86 (as is Windows XP) they won't work anyway.

I have googled some more & I think I know a bit more about ymodem. I understand it as a protocol used in the Linux shell commend line - A way of connecting to another device and giving commands. I think it can be done through windows but, I think with this method I should do it through a Linux PC. So, through this installation process I will speak to Linux on my iPaq from a Linux PC via my serial port, & give the relevant commands & uploading I need. Does this sound correct?
Ymodem is a file transfer protocol. You use it to transfer the Linux root file system to your iPAQ over the serial connection. But first you have to install the new bootloader. BootBlaster (a WinCE app, will be run on the iPAQ itself) will take care of this. You can do this using Windows as well, you only need a terminal emulator. I have used HyperTerminal to install Linux on my old iPAQ but there are other options as well.

Glad you got it sorted

That script is not mine, it was created by Osamu Aoki. So all credits go to him. I merely posted the link to it.

Do you have the recovery card?

If you don't you need another Linux box with a (micro)SD card reader. Then, use this script to create the microSD recovery card which will enable you to get back to square one.

http://people.debian.org/~osamu/pub/spider-recovery

This can be run on any Linux PC like this (/dev/mmcblk0 is your card reader, change if necessary):
Code: [Select]
sudo DEV=/dev/mmcblk0 ./spider-recovery
On a sidenote, can you press Ctrl-Alt-F1 when you see the black screen and get to a console? If yes you can try to log on and fix the problem if you know what it is.

Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker / Sharp Netwalker Pc-t1
« on: April 19, 2010, 10:24:20 am »
I bet it is primarily meant for the Japanese market with the preinstalled dictionary etc. so any potential buyers outside will have to rely on Conics.

As far as specs and software is concerned it looks just like a Netwalker without a keyboard - same specs, same OS. I hope they use a better (more accurate) touchscreen this time.

Comparing it to "another tablet" would be a bit of an apples to oranges comparison as the T1 runs a desktop OS, i.e. a different approach to software availability etc. so targets a different type of customer. Just my $0.02 though, but I see this more as a little Tablet PC rather than a MID or web tablet (or whatever you call devices such as Apple's or the Archos 5).

Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker / Reset Button In Netwalker?
« on: April 12, 2010, 05:40:43 am »
You can force a power-off by holding the power button for 4 seconds like on a regular PC/laptop and then turn it back on. Cumbersome, I know, but it works. I couldn't find a reset button either.

Onboard BT would be nice, yes but you can connect a tiny USB adaptor which is barely noticeable. You lose an USB port though. I wonder why they didn't integrate a second full USB port, space constraints perhaps?

Dear friends,

Our cellular company has given us the Huawei EC228 modem for mobile Internet access. When I plug it into the Netwalker, a dialog box opens up. Unfortunately,  the dialog box does not have the buttons accessible (They are below the bottom of the screen.) for making sellections, nor accessing the next menu. Any ideas?

Or maybe I should ask first if connecting the Netwalker with this modem might even be possible?

Thanks in advance!

Well, I would use the Alt key along with dragging window with left mouse button...
Or you can rotate screen with xrandr (if X are properly configured and supports xrandr extensions)
xrandr didn't work for me.
