....just remembered - TRIsoft also said they'd seen situations in which they'd have to leave the unit without a battery for up to 1 hour to accept the D+B trick...

You may have already read all about this, but just in case:

I remember my Zaurus being totally dead as well (also about two weeks after I bought it).  There was no light - absolutely nothing.... After about 24 hrs of fiddling around I finally managed to get a prompt but only after I'd accessed the service menus as follows:

Total power off (no battery or AC).

Press D+M (I think D+P works as well but you get a slightly different menu), hold down firm & attach AC while holding keys down for 3-5 seconds ... this should get you into the service menu. You can do a lot here but I wouldn't do anything if I were you - just detach power again.

Then (while AC still detached): press D+B and hold down firmly while inserting battery and locking battery switch - then switch the unit on (while still holding keys) and you should get the SHARP boot screen and console login. This last thing is what I had to try a number of times - getting into the service menus was easier.

Only after doing the above steps did I get my yellow charging light back - I just typed "reboot" from the console session and the thing worked again.

Of course you have a C1000 so it could be slightly different...

Good luck,
Ben

The D+M thingy is really fiddly. Keep trying - it took me about 5-6 tries to get it to work but it _does_ work...

Haven't tried it myself, but there is some documentation about restoring from scratch .

I've seen that error before. I think it went away when I started using passwords. Here's my config:

/usr/lib/samba/smb.conf:

#################################################################
#======================= Global Settings =====================================
[global]

# workgroup = NT-Domain-Name or Workgroup-Name
        workgroup = <Your Workgroup>
        security = user

# server string is the equivalent of the NT Description field
        server string = Zaurus Samba

        hosts allow = <Your network> (for example: 192.168.0. 192.168.1. 127.)

        log file = /dev/null

        socket options = TCP_NODELAY

        password server = None
        dns proxy = no

#============================ Share Definitions ==============================

[zaurus]
        comment = homedir
        path = /home/zaurus
        valid users = zaurus
        writeable = yes

#################################################################

Mount from linux with:

mount //<Zaurus IP or hostname>/zaurus  <mountpoint>  -o username=zaurus,password=<zaurus pw>

Hope this works for you as well... (don't forget to kill and restart smbd)

Cheers,
Ben

Have you tried getting a prompt with the D+B keys? TRIsoft has a  manual that describes how to do it. (p.31) It's a bit difficult to do and I had to try about 5 times before I got it to boot but it does work.

From the prompt you could probably mount the drive, run fdisk and change back to vfat.

Ben

If you want to connect to your windows shares from the Z, you need the client. I don't need to this - I just want a way of moving files easily so I just use the samba server (smbd) on the Z and connect to it from linux or windows (running in vmware of course  ).

All you need to do is adapt the config file (on my Zaurus it's /hdd2/usr/lib/samba/smb.conf). There's loads of info on the web to show how to do this. Once you bring it up, you should be able to use smbmount from your linux desktop to mount the share(s) on the Z.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Movie In Vga Resolution?
« on: January 31, 2005, 08:13:48 pm »
Until we've got a decent mplayer for the C3000, you can try the method below (maybe it's not ideal, but it works for me)

To get mplayer-w100 (1.0pre5.2-1) to play fullscreen on the C3K I just use opie-embeddedkonsole (1.5.9-2) which will start in low-res (at least on my machine). From there I play the movie with "mplayer -fs -vo fbdev -vf rotate=1 -framedrop". Sometimes I have to add "-delay -0.5" because the sound is out of sync for some reason.

Encode example:

"mencoder <Input> -vf dsize=640:272,scale=320:136,expand=0:-104 -sws 2 -o Output.avi -oac mp3lame -lameopts preset=96:mode=0:vol=10 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vhq:v4mv:mbd=2:trell:cmp=3:subcmp=3:mbcmp=3:vbitrate=200:autoaspect -ofps 23.976"

Use your original resolution for "dsize" and (<target y resolution> - 240) for the y value of "expand", i.e. (136-240)=-104 in the example above. This will add a border which is necessary because otherwise you can see the (ugly) grey terminal background.

Ben

Installing smbclient on my SL-C3000 was one of the first things I did and it wrecked it alright. It worked fine until I rebooted and then it wouldn't come up anymore. I had to restore to original (Japanese) state.

I use smbd instead and mount from my linux desktop which works fine.

Cheers,
Ben

Well... D+M doesn't wipe anything as far as I know (just gets you into the service menus) but the stuff in the "Ok" menu mentioned in my previous posts does (at least when I did it I lost everything I'd done and the machine was back into it's original state).

I've since then converted dev/hda3 (mounted under /hdd3) to ext3 and put Debian on it, so I don't know how it would react to that but I presume it will just re-create the partitions in their original state (so /dev/hda3 would be vfat again I recon).

By the way: after a few more brick events I discovered that it was the smbclient package that caused the machine to fail at boot. I've given up on the client and just run the server on my SL-C3000 - works like a charm ;-)

Cheers,
Ben

Hi Marc,

Your manual rocks!!!!

Initially I couldn't get back into the "Ok" menu (only in the service menus) but with your documentation I managed to get into a prompt ( D+B ) albeit after trying a few times. After performing a reboot with the root user, the "Ok" menu worked again and I could restore the machine in it's original Japanese status. (now first let's get a shell back...)

Many thanks indeed.
Ben

Ok that's good news. I'll copy the image on a CF and see if it works.

Thanks!

Hello,

I've been playing around with my brand new SL-C3000 for two weeks, initially converting it and then installing all sorts of stuff. During the first two days I rebooted the device a couple of times (shutdown didn't seem to work but reboot worked fine) but after the latest reboot, it seemed stuck at the initial screen with the SHARP logo.

I can't read what it says exactly, but it looks like the grep command can't find the stab file or something. It loops indefinitely and if I CTRL-C it, the machine reboots. After some investigation on the web, I found out that I can get into the service menus by pressing D-M or D-P while attaching AC power. I've seen a NAND Flash Restore option on page 3 but I havent got a backup of the OS image on CF. (only on the internal HD...) Does anybody know whether I can just write the image that I've downloaded from Conics (SYSTC300.DBK) to a CF card using some other device and restore from that? Also, are there any pitfalls in using this functionality that I should be aware of?

Of course it would be my preference to solve this issue from the Zaurus itself: I've also read that you can boot into a console directly by pressing D-B but this doesn't seem to work for me... Does anybody know how to get this to work on the SL-C3000? The only thing I can get into at the moment are the service menus - the Japanese menu that I got by pressing "Ok" at bootup doesn't work either anymore...

If anybody can give me some hints, I'd appreciate it enormously.

Many thanks!!!
Ben
