Deals and Great Z Buys / 2 British sources for cheap SD cards..
« on: February 03, 2005, 12:16:31 pm »
If you have a look at www.scan.co.uk, they have SD cards for:

Scan own brand (it was a Dane Elec last time i got one):
512MB @ £25.25
1GB @ £51.57

Corsair:
512MB @ £29.67
1GB @ £56.40

Okay, their postage isn't cheap - its about a tenner unless they do a small package one - but if you're buying other stuff or sharing an order, it can be quite good.

Just in case anyone wanted to know :)

Deals and Great Z Buys / It Is Possible To Buy A Sl-6000l For $285 On Ebay!
« on: December 21, 2004, 01:12:51 pm »
I don't think that cover on Amazon is for a 6000. It looks like the fitting on a 5500/5600, unless i'm mistaken?

I'm sure i've seen one for a 6000, just need to remember where.

Btw, Neuroshock, did you have any problems installing/running your TRENDnet TE-CF100 ethernet card? I've seen them on Newegg for $35 (inc postage), which is a darn sight cheaper than a Socket card. I might even get two!

Ta!

6000 - Tosa / Screen Problems
« on: December 17, 2004, 04:41:36 am »
Thank you for the thoughts and info!

Unfortunately, my dead pixels are white and blue, with two red ones sometimes appear as well. I can't see them in normal use but yes, they get really annoying with dark screens. I might give Sharp a call tonight and see what they say (thanks saakmotu!)

Just so you know: With the two that sometimes appear in mind, i thought i'd try a complete battery removal and switched the backup battery to off as well, to see if this "cleared" them all. Of course, i really knew it wouldn't but i wasn't prepared for my Z not coming back on! Eek! Panic really starts to set in at that stage ;) Fortunately, if you look in the troubleshooting section of the manual, it says to remove the battery for 5 seconds (i did it for 15s) and do the restart sequence (pwr+rec+reset) and that brought it back to life. There were a few scary minutes there, though, where i thought i'd killed it!

@Tehas - Have you done anything about the rotation of your screen or just left it as it is? Not that i know if its user-adjustable, except maybe with a screwdriver and a steady hand.

Thanks again :)

6000 - Tosa / battery life & flying?
« on: December 16, 2004, 12:24:52 pm »
Just as another bit of experience with a Zaurus and flying:
I took my 6000 on a  flight and had no problems with it. I was using an IR keyboard and used it for about an hour and a half with no loss of battery power (i have the expansion sled too).  I didn't use the wifi and made sure there were no connections listed so that it "shouldn't" try to connect to anything. Though i must stress, i did ask before using it - the cabin crew asked the captain who asked his ground/technical staff and they still had the proviso that if anything started going funny, they'd assume it was my device. All was okay, though. I'm still alive so it must have been

Of course, if they'd said i couldn't use it, i'd have switched it off completely.  I wanted to make it to my destination

6000 - Tosa / Screen Problems
« on: December 16, 2004, 11:56:11 am »
Hi all,

I just managed to get hold of a 6000 and i'm very happy with it so far, except for a few niggles. I know you probably get tons of newbie questions but i wondered if any of you knew about any of the following...? Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Is there any way to alter the screen orientation? Mine seems to be at an angle (slightly lower on the left side than the right) and much as its not really a problem, its kind of annoying since its a new device (got it from Amazon for $379 just before the scam(s) started - i hope people are getting their money back from this). I suspect there's no way you can alter it like you would a standard CRT screen but maybe someone knows differently?

Is there a threshold for the number of dead pixels before you can send the device back to Sharp for a replacement? Mine was perfect when i got it a couple of weeks ago but i've got four dead ones since then - one right in the centre of the screen *grr!*. Also, does anyone know if Sharp are honouring the warranties, since they seem to have stopped making the 6000 for the US markets?

I don't know a great deal about linux yet but having a Z is certainly going to force me to learn, which was part of the idea of buying one ;) I'm just glad this place exists as you all seem a very helpful lot :)

Thank you for any thoughts!
