X/Qt / Debian with Xqt
« on: January 04, 2005, 01:41:22 pm »
Ok, I have gone ahead and set this up, but I am still having one nagging issue, and frankly it is kind of embarrassing, since I have used unix for years (but no longer X, for the last 8 or more).

On my SL-6000L, the xmodmap command in the debroot/startd script proscribed by the debian wiki page on this (http://wiki.debian.net/index.cgi?PocketWorkstation-XQT) does not have any effect. It is indeed being run, but it seems I must manually run xmodmap from an xterm, after which it seems to stick.

Can anyone imagine why this is happening ? Like I said, xmodmap in startd does seem that it is being run ...

6000 - Tosa / "record" Key

This might be a totally useless contribution, but it occurs to me that you might be able to short circuit the fact that these programs are searching all files by changing permissions so that they CANNOT search parts of the file hierarchy. In other words, do something like changing the group of the files they should be able to read to 'qpe' and make the permissions something appropriate, and then change permissions elsewhere so that they cannot traverse, say, your pocketworkstation debroot directory or something. Anyway, just my random 2 cents that may or may not work.

X/Qt / X/Qt version 2

Well, this is basically because by default the keyboard on the SL-6000L is not mapped very sensibly (for an English-language user at least). I will eventually fix this using xmodmap (I presume) and if I do, I will post my results. Perhaps this has already been done, since no one else has said anything.

6000 - Tosa / Asking For Date/time Every Reboot? Help?!
« on: December 16, 2004, 12:06:15 pm »
Ok, I appreciate this information very much. Now, I have a couple related questions, then. Is there any way to disable it asking me, but have it instead try to make a wireless connection and run ntp to update the system's clock ? I doubt ntp is installed by default but I don't imagine it should be THAT hard  to compile for the Z? Maybe I should give it a whirl before I open my big mouth.

Thanks again for all your kind replies.

X/Qt / X/Qt version 2

I find that on my SL-6000L, when I install this version, my shift keys do not work in any X applications. Are these somehow remapped to something else? If so, I cannot determine what, and it is very difficult to do anything without these available.

6000 - Tosa / Asking For Date/time Every Reboot? Help?!
« on: December 16, 2004, 02:25:43 am »
Hi everyone,

I am a brand new SL-6000L user, and everything seems to be going well, but every time I reboot the device (not suspend, but an actual reboot) it asks me for the date and time ... is this normal? What do you think the issue might be ? (For example, is there a backup battery for an internal clock that could be missing or burnt out or something?)

Should I call Sharp tech support? Please help.

Thanks!

-Paul

I'm debating whether or not to call, myself, or if I should wait until morning.

Can you give us some information on how you arranged them to give you a refund? Do they have further reason to believe it is indeed a fraud?

Hi everyone. I'm a new user here, and I happened to have purchased a couple of these from jpettins before I found this website. You can imagine my relief at finding a bunch of other users who are in the same situation as myself.

It doesn't make it better if we get ripped off, but I have to say I find comfort in the fact that Amazon cannot possibly give us a hard time about a refund with this, since there are so many of us who are in touch about it.

Thanks to all of you who are doing the work to try to track this guy down. As soon as I know it's a fraud, I can start looking for other sources for new Zauruses (read: ebay).
