Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxrom Vs Oz & Gpe

going back to the topic from a noob point of view:

I've started my pda experience with a toshiba e750 mounting a windoze system... no way. winz sucks, so I decided to buy a Z...
now I'm a proud owner of a c3k clamshell Z and I've tried both pdaxrom and OZ....

what do I want most from my pda is:
- pre-installed software or an easy way to install it
- a fast system
- easy syncing with my pc (windoz or linux doesn't matter but it matters it must be easy!)
- the possibility to write some text in a format I can read on windoze machines
- a working mp3 player with a GUI
- a working video player with a GUI
- a pdf reader that takes into consideration pda limitation (small screen, slow processor, little ram) and capable of loading and displaying large pdf files.

I think that neither pdaxrom or OZ satisfy my needs... but here are some considerations from a noob point of view:
- pdaxrom doesnt fully support c3k while OZ does
- both distros need some learning to get installed what you like but I feel more confortable with OZ...
- I'd like to have only 1 distro for my pda instead of the ability to choose between 3 (gpe, opie, pdax) which don't satisfy my needs (but I understand this is a dream...)
- I'd be glad to donate on a montly base to get my needs satisfied.....
- I'd like to meet other people with my problems to count ourselves and to plan a strategy to improve our pda...

to every n00b out there,

I'm starting a discussion on "how to get a better OS for my Z pda".

main goal of this thread is to understand what do newbie like me want most, and what we can do to get it done quickly.

from my point of view:
I'd like a good pim suite for GPE, a well working pdf reader and a media player.
I'd be glad to donate some $$ every month to anyone that could satisfy my needs...


what do you think about it?

I'm sorry... but I thought my requests where quite "exact"....

If you think of a PDA from a windows user point of view they're absolutely exact....
And I think a lot of people own a Z without beeing able to hack it or compile anything...

hi all

I'm giving my noob point of view to contribute to "what sould be updated" (or created?) thread, so please be patient since it could even be OT...

I think this could help to keep in mind non-linux-experienced-user point of view, that's all.

what I miss most in order of relevance:

1) a good pim software (like opie one, not gpe)
2) an easy way to sync to a windoze machine (opie-like)
3) a working package manager (I'm learning how to use ipkg but I think this is not for beginners or occasional users)
4) any working emulator to play something when I'm travelling on a bus (xmame? snes9x? but keep in mind that if they don't work from scratc....)
5) a working mp3 player and eventually a video player (keep in mind how hard it could be for a non-experienced user to use a command line mp3 player!)
6) a pdf reader

I've tryed both opie and gpe on my c3k: I like them both but I'm not satisfacted

I went back to "default settings" in security menu and re-entered ip addresses...

maybe I messed un something before.....

Networking works fine, I can connect to my access point with my wifi cf...
(and it works since I can surf the web)

the problem il qtopia desktop refuses to see my z....
both my pc and my z have static ip address, Qtopia is correctly set up to "point" to Z ip...

the two machines can ping themselves....

dunno....

hello all,

I need some help syncing my Z pim to a windoze machine.
an howto whould be appreciated since I can no more sync my favourite pda to my windoze machine.
(prevously I was able to sync my spitz mounting oz 3.5.4/opie to qtopia desktop 1.7.0, but now with 3.5.4.1-alpha I cannot....)
please help me!

Im runnung qtopia desktop on my laptop (windoze 2k) version 2.1.2

I've configured Z ip in qtopia, and on Z abilited (in "security") syncing with qtopia 1.7....

hi all,

after playing around a little with my c3k and pdaxrom I realized my pda became of no use for me....... basically I need a good pim and the possibility to sync with my personal computer running qtopia desktop...

so I'm back to oz.

downloaded a spitz 3.5.4 rom from hrw dir and sadly discovered I can't sync with my pc running qtopia.

what happened?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Gp2x Psone Emulator Running Realy Fast

I can't belive noone there is able to produce some good asm coding to speed-up this very nice emulator.....

why spend a lot of time producing a better compiler when you can trace time consuming procs and convert them to asm?!?

(a think from an old asm programmer... please be patient....)

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxrom For C3000 Beta2

Hi all.

I am a proud owner of a sl-c3000 and I'm looking for the best rom for my needs... (keep in mind I'm not a linux guru....)

basically I need a good PIM with an easy GUI, the possibility to sync appointment with my PC and to share files, and a text editor (word-compliant whould be better).
(secondary needs are a media player, a spreadsheet, some playable games, and an usable pdf reader)

I first tryed OZ... I like its pim and it easily sync on my PC, but it lacks other apps I'd like to use on a pda...

SO decided to migrate to pdax.. (tx to Thc!)

it's good too and I was able to configure my wifi card without problems...

But here come questions....
- wich feed sould I use (or feeds)
- is there a good PIM (heard once of a graphical pim with a visualization like a tree but I can't remember WHERE in the forum)
- and a working browser (tryed firefox but it doesn't work)
- some games (anyone complied a MAME port ?  )
- how can I sync (PIM and share files) to my PC....
