6000 - Tosa / Software Survey On Z6K
« on: January 15, 2005, 06:25:28 pm »
It has been some time since I've bought Z. I knew I'd have to deal with many things via command line. I was expecting a hardware running Linux and some apps that'd make me feel good about the price I've paid. The one thing I wasn't aware before I bought was that software for Z had been very much 5X or CX oriented. I didn't realize that I'd have to spend hours to get gaim working on 6K while my friends with 5X00s has installed and ran in minutes. I've also been following the threads on running kismet, openzaurus and several other stuff that matter for Z6K users while other machine owners don't have difficulty with.

I've created this poll to see what other Z6K users expect. I hope this would give some feedback to developers.

6000 - Tosa / Help For Making Gprs Connection Thru Irda.
« on: January 11, 2005, 08:45:45 pm »
Actually I've solved my issue by manually entering information in the pap secrets file. I believe the GUI app does the same thing. The actual username and password depends on your operator. Many operators in Europe have a fixed username and password. So you've better check with your operator. In case your operator is Linux unfriendly and the operator at the call center resists on saying the same sentence over and over again, check out you phone settings. The username must be hidden in those setting somewhere. Or google for it. Hope this helps.

You would not get get any responses. That's more Linux than Zaurus. in the directory you've created links type "ls -l" then you'll see in the listing.

Hope this helps

6000 - Tosa / SL-6000 carry cases
« on: December 27, 2004, 11:35:29 am »
Hi folks,

How do you carry your SL-6000 with you? I'll be buying online without seeing, therefore I'm wondering which case would be suitable. There are many cases for Palm and iPaq but SL6000 would not seem to fit in.

Thanks in advance.

6000 - Tosa / Who has a 6000?
« on: December 27, 2004, 11:25:10 am »
Got my SK-6000 a month ago from Amazon. I was just pittying myself why didn't I get 5600 while the price was really low and SL6000 was way too high. In 3 weeks time SL6000 went donw to $500 then to $370 and I immediatelly got mine

My major problem with SL6K is that I can't get a good carrying case and I won't take it with me without some kind of protection. So it sits next to my monitor on my desktop. Any recommendations for a leather/nylon case ? How do you carry your SL6K wth you?

Have you tried Fn + shift + B ? It works for ctrl - D (exit) ? Also try the Shift + Cancel + Letter sequence. might help. The Fn + Shift + C combination takes screenshot which I found it by chance.

6000 - Tosa / OpenZaurus, OZ on the 6000
« on: December 18, 2004, 08:58:16 am »
Having bought an SL-6000 recently I've read lots of messages and the first thing I felt for flashing the ROM was FEAR. Fear of not being able to revert to original state.

So as a new Z user I'm eager to trying OZ. Here are my thoughs. But before writing anything else I really suspect most people don't know what opie and gpe are.

Well here are my thoughts..

There must be an SL-6000 specific documentation for how to install OZ. Taking the possibility to do that either from SD or CF. I myself have not tried OZ yet. It is a time issue but I still have some fears.

Sharp ROM comes with commercial apps, and I think there must be some means of extracting them from Sharp ROM to OZ installation. There would of course be licencing issues, but I would like to be able o create ipk packages from my existing Sharp ROM and be able to install them on OZ. Those applications must cover Opera, Hancom Word and Hancom Sheet at least. Since all are includedin the price, all SL-6000 users must be eligible to use those software on their Zs.

I think this is a great opportunity for an open source project. I think almost all of the SL-6000 owners have the very same machine at their hands. SL-6000 with WiFi without Bluetooth. Can you imagine all the hardware is homogenous !!! That's not the case for SL-5X00. There are 5500 users and 5600 users.

My OPINION is the first thing to do is to encourage users to test OZ by providing necessary documentation to do testing without harming their original ROMs. And I think this is the first barrier to overcome. The FEAR of losing what already is present.

If I'm not mistaken There is no SL-6000 specific OZ website/section anywhere, or at least I could not find it.

Cheers.

6000 - Tosa / Gaim
« on: December 18, 2004, 08:28:22 am »
I've followed the instructions and downloaded libpng from gaim FAQ linkand created symbolic links. Gaim now works fine and changing the magnification setting from the desktop icon it looks great. However I cannot connect to Yahoo neither from Z nor from my desktop gaim. I think it is a gaim issue. Maybe you have noticed already but the application dies when I hit the group chat button (I guess) the secondone from top left. I can live without it. although.. just for the records..

cheers

Thanks. You helped saving my time for searching affix and sl 6000 stuff. I'll look for obex thread in the forums. If you intend to do some development I'd love tohelp. Don't know how at the moment but I'll try to figure out how to develop on Z soon : )

Yes. I'm pretty happy with Opera and Hancom office. I'd love to check OZ for 6000 but if only I can have the time to invest.

I hate nerds showing their bluetooth icon in their PocketPC's as if it was a holy thing  Having obex push and recv would be lovely.

What makes me move away from Sharp's rom is that I found it very confusing. For instance while I was trying to hack network connection gui to use the bluetooth dial-up and pan applet I've seen many modules that did not show up in the GUI. For instancethere is a chat file template for GPRS. I'm sure I haven't installed it it has a very old date bu the file is not used with the pair of pppd call scripts that are present. Alsothere are files and configs for VPN but they didn't how up in the gui Iwonder if they are related with LAN access. I found Sharp rom to be a bit dirty in that sense. From the outside you don't see it but a root ssh shell shows it all.

Also there is a libobex.so but I doubt if it camefrom bluez or not. It'd be lovely to have bluetooth file and vcard exchange.

Does affix have advantage over bluez in Z? Any thoughts?

The SL-6000 model names have misleaded me a lot. I've got my Z from amazon and it was named SL-6000 only. without a letter. The docs that came with it says SL-6000N/SL-6000L and there's no distinction between L and N. Not a clue in the docs. However I was hoping to buy whatever the model name is for WiFi + BT, but I didn't even come across any SL-6000 being sold olnline with BT. So I checked out forums and decided to get AmbiCom BT 2000 E which I've managet to install. Anyhow I've managed to get Z 6000 + Ambicom BT CF at a very good price.

Does other ROMs have bluetooth gui? OpenZaurus? I wish to give it a try if I can find any success about SL-6000 and OpenZaurus. I'm pretty happy with Opera and Hancom office. Both Linux apps and are included in the price I've already paid.

I've succeded in installing blueZ to use Ambicom BT2000E CF adaptor and managed to get online with GPRS using Sony Ericsson T600. Following the How-to document and taking advantage of ssh connection to my Z over usb-net. It wasn't that much difficult.

However, the only way currently to get online via BT GPRS is to click the dummy Irda connection I've ceated and heavily edited.

The Bluetooth network profile/ applet does not work on SL-6000. When installed you can see the screens to create a BT dial-up connection but when you click the connect icon on the taskbar the list contains an empty item which is supposed to be the bluetooth icon. Playing with the config files I've managed to move the Bluetooth connection as a Dial-up option but then when clicked to connect I get "plugin not found" error.

Does anybody have managed to see a bluetooth icon in the task bar and is there any fancy bluetooth GUI for 6000 apart from dial-upconnection? And is there anyone able to use bluetooth network applet succesfully?

PS: default Sharp ROM supplied.
