Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker / No More Updates From Sharp For The Netwalker?

While I understand your point, I think you're forgetting that

A) most of the devices you mention including the Netwalker were Japan market devices, not intended for markets outside of Japan, ie, you and me....so, why would Sharp expend $'s to support you or me in terms of how we'd like to use a device that was never intended for us?

Thanks for your input, but actually the SL**** series WAS sold to the general public up in the U. S. (I say "up", cuz I live 700 miles South of the border.) through Best Buy stores and many others. I bought my first SL5500 in McAllen TX on a trip up there.

So in that respect, U.S. is also not the only English-speaking market in the world. Plus the general Linux community is huge. I believe they could have built a much-larger dedicated customer base, with a stronger update and support program.

My two pesos' worth.

I think we are reliving the great disappointments that we went through with the Sharp SL**** series. I have the SL5500, SL5600 and SL6000. They (Sharp) were real good for updates t the beginning, and then forgot we existed.

Maybe they are counting on the users to build their own versions of the OS and keep it updated???

First, thanks a million to those who offered tips! I am at this very moment typing this on the Netwalker, connected via the celular modem:

I got it working!!!! Here is what I did.

Besides selecting my proper country and celular Internet provier,
1. In Terminal, type sudo gedit /etc/resolv.conf
2. In the file that opens, change whatever it says DNS-wise to:

# Generated by NetworkManager
nameserver 208.67.222.222

This is one of the 2 OpenDNS numbers I discovered on the Ubuntu Forums. The other is 208.67.220.220. It may also work with other celular modems. It also worked on my desktop Linux box.

Hope this helps somebody else!

I also installed Gparted, thinking to add a Swap file to 16Gb microSDHC card. Gpated installed, but showed no drives whatsoever. I even plugged in an external hard drive, which showed up quickly on the desktop. I refreshed Gparted's devices, but still no drives of any kind.
Did you run gparted as root?

Yes, I tried to run it as "Root".

I know I saw a post on something like this when I set up my Acer Aspire One with Ubuntu, but I cannot find it. When I want to, for example, set up the wireless connections, and a dialogue box opens up, the [next] or whatever buttons ar not visible, as the screen resolution places them below the screen. Can somebody help me PLEASE PRETTY PLEASE? Thanks in advance!

I have downloaded de proper Flash Player lite file (see link here: ftp.photoengineering.org/netwalker) and tried to install it several times, and it apparently DOES install, but does not work. On Youtube, for example, I get a "Java disabled or not installed" warning. There are videos on Youtube that show Youtube working on the Netwalker.  What am I doing wrong? Can sombody help me please? Thanks in advance!

Dear Friends,

The idea is to have a folder on my Netwalker that that is visible and open (no passwords) to the public, such as my family's WindowsXP and Mac machines, and my own WindowsXP and Ubuntu desktop and latop. The purpose is to move files back and forth, mostly pictures and documents.

I have created a folder on my Netwalker's 16-GB microSDHC storage card called "Sharenetwalker", and then installed the proper Samba packages. I also set up the proper sharing options, as I have a trillion times on other Ubuntu installs. Then I was asked to restart session. I did. But when I click on "Create Share", I get an error message: " 'net usershare' returned error 255: cannot convert name "Everyone" to a SID. The connection was refused. Maybe smbd is not running".

HELP!!!!

Thanks in advance!

Dear friends,

Our cellular company has given us the Huawei EC228 modem for mobile Internet access. When I plug it into the Netwalker, a dialog box opens up. Unfortunately,  the dialog box does not have the buttons accessible (They are below the bottom of the screen.) for making sellections, nor accessing the next menu. Any ideas?

Or maybe I should ask first if connecting the Netwalker with this modem might even be possible?

Thanks in advance!

Congrats and welcome

Congrats on getting the leather case too, is it PDair's? I had to buy mine separately. It is awesome though.

As ArchiMark said, have fun.
Yes, it is the PDair case.

Hi. Thanks for the previous posts.

1. I also have a 16 Gb card on mine, which I don't plan to remove unless I can get a 32- or 64-Gb card. How can I add a Swap file on the card, (asuming this might speed up the system)? I tried to install Gpatred, but it would not work on this system. I would also not mind moving Home over to the card, if that were possible.

2. I notice there are still quite a few Japanese language files and fonts which I tried to remove, but it told me it would remove the desktop. I wanted to liberate a little more space.

3. On the left side of the machine is a full-size USB port. I have tried a normal USB mouse and an external USB hard drive. Worked fine. What is the smaller USB connector on the right side for? I tried connecting it via a mini USB to USB cable to my laptop for file transfer, but no go. I read somewhere that supposedly the Netwalker should show up as an external drive on the laptop. I tried with both WindowsXP and Linux Mint (Ubuntu variety) on my laptop.

4. My touch screen calllibration appears to be off. I have tried to recallibrate it five times. It always requires me to touch the stylus slighly below where I actually want to tick. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your input!
