Actually, Sharp is not dumb on this issue. Imagine what you'd have gotten with a built in mic:  it would be small and very likely not capturing sound well. But without it you have a choice what mic to use. I can easily imagine using 7-feet uni-directional "gun" type mic with a 100 yard range with the Zaurus, James Bond type of thing
