C1000/3x00 Hardware / I'm Disappointed
« on: October 21, 2005, 10:42:31 am »
It appears we may be on the verge of a break-through in battery technology that may solve a lot of your problem.  I've heard of a new Lithium battery that may yield 4 times the power than the current lithium battery of the same size.  Also, the promise of fuel cells that will provide longer battery life.
If these technologies pan out, we may no longer have to sacrifice functionality to conserve energy.

General Discussion / Video Ipod Playback Specs

Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 KHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 480 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 KHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats

Does anyone know what chipset the Video iPod has that allows it to replay video at 30fps?

I was always under the impression that an iPod was not even close to the Zaurus where processor power was concerned.  So is it in software that this performance comes from or is the iPod packing more under the hood than I’m aware of?

If they have a less powerful chipset that the Zaurus and can playback mpeg-4 at 480x480 and 30fps, why can’t the Z with more horsepower produce 640x480 at 30 fps smoothly?

Here's a link to an extensive Video Ipod review and they also dissect it and discuss the internal chipset.  They packed quite a bit into such a small space.

General Discussion / Sharp 4e-mb1 Mobile Av Player
« on: October 04, 2005, 04:31:25 pm »
http://www.bluefi.co.uk/news/sharp_4emb1_m..._av_player.html

This is announcement is a bit dated, October of 2004, but interesting none the less.  Several sites mention that satellite tv is the hot new thing in Japan and Korea.  Why is the US so late to the party?

I could not find any processor specs on this device, but I was wondering if it uses the new Intel PXA270 processor and the companion 2700G accelerator processor.  If it does have this combination of chips, it could be an indicator that the next Zaurus will possess the same (rumor).

Sharp seems to be making a strong move into the mobile AV arena with this device and several phones (in Japan) that handle streaming video.  I believe it is true that with the above chips a handheld can handle 30fps at 640x480.

Is there anyone in Japan who is able to tell us anything about this device and the satellite tv service?  Or confirm the rumors, from shaky sources, that the next Z will replace the HD with 4GB Flash, come with integrated wifi, and possess the aforementioned Intel chips?

Software / Opie-reader

Tim,

Thanks for the thorough explanation.  I didn't realize there was such a difference between PDFs and other document formats.  You have a great product in Opie-Reader and I also appreciate the way you have supported the product as well.

Thanks

Software / Opie-reader

Tim,

Opie-Reader has become an indispensible app for me both for e-books and as an offline web browser in conjunction with Sunrise (formats pages in Plucker).

Please tell me you have plans to add PDFs to the document types Opie-Reader supports.  If you have no plans, what are the limitations or what can we (the Z community) do to convince you to take on this mission.

I don't think I'm alone when I say that I'd like one viewer to view them all, well at least most of the formats.

There is a lot of fire power packed into this little unit, not much larger than the Z clamshell.  I know the cost may be prohibitive and the battery life will probably be a bit of a disappointment, but man is this a nice set of features in a handheld device.

Wonder if you can install a full version of Linux?

General Discussion / Psion To Make Linux Handheld ?
« on: September 19, 2005, 04:34:58 pm »
I came across this article from last year that indicated that Psion would possibly make a Linux handheld.  Has anyone heard any news about this?  I know there are several people on this site who have owned or still own a Psion handheld.  I understand they were well thought out and well engineered handhelds.

What kind of specs do you think a Psion Linux handheld would debute with?
- 802.11g?, BT?, built-in hard-drive?

I don't know what direction Psion was/is headed in with its handhelds, but it would be nice to see another manufacturer create a quality linux handheld that would be available in the US.

Thoughts?

Sharp ROMs / Cacko Rom 1.22 Is Available!

I'll get back to you guys with more detailed answers later from my PC. Right now just a few follow ups for most important issues:

  - Network conectivity. First thing is to make sure your card is recognized properly. Like I already mentioned - check entry for your card in /etc/pcmcia/hostap_cs.conf file. You can remove entries for all other cards so they don't get in your way. Also remember that you need to restart pcmcia after editing config file (/etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia restart).  Also make sure to turn off autoconnection in Network Settings. And finaly try to type iwconfig in console when card is trying to connect - for some strange reason it helps with some cards...

 - Backup/restore. Do NOT use backup/restore application between different ROM versions - you'll most likely get your Z in unstable state. My recommendation to restore your PIM data is using synchronization with PC. This is most reliable method. However if you don't have that option, you can just save /home/zaurus folder and then restore it. The best is to restore that directory outside of Qtopia so that fastloaded applications can reread their data when Qtopia restarts.

 - Small icons for magnified mode. I'm surprised anyone is still using it  Small icons have been removed from the ROM to save space. We'll create a package with removed icons and put it into Cacko feed. Please, wait a couple of days.
Thanks Maslovsky, this is a Great Rom!!!  I definitely don't mind the few tweaks required to get everything working just right in order to have my Z be the leading edge handheld you have helped it to be.

Anyone .... where is it (in the backup file from the "Backup/Restore" program) and how do I extract the file that contains my Sharp Adressbook file.

Sharp ROMs / Cacko Rom 1.22 Is Available!

Lost Addressbook entries!

I backed up " /home/Zaurus"  before flashing to 1.22 .  After flashing I copied over "/home/Zaurus" thinking it contained my addressbook entries, by the way I'm using the Sharp Adressbook.  When I bring up the addressbook, no entries.  Can anyone help?

Also,  I did perform a backup of the system using the "Backup/Restore" application before flashing.  Is there a way of pulling my addressbook file from this?

One more thing, I have an Ambicom WL1100C-CF wifi card and I saw the previous entries about the card being recognized but not connecting.  I'm having the same problem, what do I do to get a connection?

Thanks

Sharp ROMs / Installing The New Cacko Rom
« on: January 02, 2005, 02:25:14 am »
Can the "Backup Restore" program that comes with Cacko Rom 1.21 be used to successfully backup all my program settings or will I need to manually backup additional files?  My main concern are the following programs:  IQNotes, Netfront bookmarks, and KO/Pi.
