perhaps the popularity of the PSP and it's inclusion of wifi will be a nudge in the right direction?

General Discussion / Could Wifi Be Coming To Zaurus Soon?
« on: March 15, 2006, 10:58:42 am »
Seems sharp have been developing very small wifi module.
I wonder what they could do with this?
it's one small step for sharp...

http://www.akihabaranews.com/news-11357-Sh...iFi+module.html

now we need bluetooth + all the other wishlist items and I'll be ready to upgrade.

edit:
oops. forget this, take a look at the other topic!

General Discussion / Time For Sharp To Take Next Step?
« on: January 25, 2006, 07:54:08 pm »
From the amount of talent I've seen on this board, I'm not sure that software would be a real issue...
if sharp were to build a fantastic new Z then all they would have to do is donate some to the right people (maslovsky etc.) and the OS would be built for them.

Drivers may be an issue to begin with, but starting with a linux base on the 2.6 kernel should make things a little easier.

once the OS is in place they could bundle as much open source software as could be converted with the unit and ship a full user friendly system.
maybe even with a sharp feed for online updates.

hardware wise the 3100 looks ok, but connectivity needs to be dragged upto date with wifi and bluetooth as a bare minimum, gps and some kind of 3G connection as a bonus.

i wonder what the power consumption of a cell processor is?

General Discussion / New Sharp Pda...
« on: January 16, 2006, 09:59:31 am »
I've seen that posted somewhere recently....

Looks like it has some of the features i would like to see in a new zaurus: camera, FM tuner, microphone...

if they could cram all that into a 3100 and add wifi & bluetooth, up the resolution to 800x600, add some custom 3d graphics chip, up the processor power, add more ram, super long life battery,

i would be a happy bunny.

a very poor, not going out, living on bread and water, stay at home and play with my new zaurus bunny...

i dont ask for much, just the worlds greatest pda/laptop/phone replacement.

Sharp ROMs / Web Development On Z
« on: January 12, 2006, 10:07:27 am »
Hi all.

I'm a web developer and have managed to do some work on my Z860 in the past using the apache1.3 & mysql 3.2 software installed on cacko 1.22

Times move on and i've upgraded to cacko 1.23 lite and was looking to continue developing sites on my Z. I have found apache2-php5-mysqlclient in the package feed and installed it, that works fine.
So I set off to look for a recent version of mysql (4.1 but preferably 5)..

I managed to find an ipk for mysql 4.1 for pdaxrom, and being the rash kind of guy, installed it.
(you can tell there is a problem coming)
Unfortunately when i tried to run the mysql daemon it complains that it cant find libstdc++.so.5
Once again i did the random hack thing and created a link from libstdc++.so to libstdc++.so.5

Obviously this didn't work but did respond with an error about GCC 3. From what i've read Cacko is using gcc 2.95 ? so this installation is never going to work.

So I was wondering whether anyone knew of an ipk for mysql that will install and run under cacko? Like I said I'm a web developer by profession so my compiling skills end just after
./configure
make
make install

Is it possible to compile mysql5 for the Z or is it one of those things that is never going to happen?
As a last resort I may consider switching to pdaXrom, but I've had my 860 for 1 year now (well, 362 days) and as soon as I got it I chose cacko because of Maslovsky's great work and skill.

any help you can give me, even if it's "switch to pdaxrom" will be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Adam.

Security and Networking / Connecting To Samsung D500 Phone
« on: October 28, 2005, 08:44:53 am »
Hello.

I've just got a new samsung D500 mobile phone, and I was wondering if anyone here has been able to connect the zaurus to their phone. I have a c860 runing cacko 1.22 lite.
I mainly want to sync contacts and calendar with KO/PI KA/PI but, also for use as a modem as well (via IR, not bluetooth).

any ideas as to where to start would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
adam.

Deals and Great Z Buys / Socket Low Power Wireless Card
« on: April 20, 2005, 04:35:58 pm »
I've just won one of these cards on ebay.
I installed wellenreiter and kismet because I knew it was arriving soon.
Had it posted to work, so when it arrived today I plugged it straight in and fired up wellenreiter. It instantly found loads of networks.

Happly I tried to run kismet, what the heck is that all about? I have no idea what it was up to or how to make it do anythig useful.
might have to resort to the docs...

out of interest, the card seems to be running "orinoco" drivers, is this right or can I get better ones elsewhere.

cheers.

UK / Anyone Have Any Uk Roadmaps?
« on: April 10, 2005, 07:50:09 am »
Hi.

One thing I would like to get working on my Z is a good UK map.
I don't have GPS so that doesn't need to be a priority.
The only thing I have found is zroadmap, but it only has US maps available.

Does anyone have any ideas about this sort of thing?
I know there are maps and software available for other platforms, can the Z read any of these?

Cheers,
ad.

General Discussion / Who are you and where are you from?
« on: February 25, 2005, 08:35:57 pm »
wow.
didn't think i'd have so much fun reading about other people in a zaurus forum!
after hearing about all you guys i'm starting to think i'm not as much of a geek as i thought i was.
i'm probably one of the least interesting people here...
my name is adam mcauley, i'm 30 years old and i live in sheffield, UK. I've had a zaurus since january this year, thanks to ebay.
I've had my eye on them since the old 5000 developer models were out but could never justify the expense. I work as a web developer in Sheffield (Perl, PHP, mysql, linux, apache) & i've been using linux for a few years.

as i am a newbie, not only to zaurus, but to pda's in general, i'm still finding out what it is i'm trying to do that the Z can't. A nice remote control app would be nice, the opie thing (lirc) doesn't seem to work for me. and there doesn't seem to be any good map software for the UK.
used the sharp rom, didn't like it, switched to cacko 1.22 one night after a couple (ahem) of beers down the pub.

oh, and when people at work saw my 860, they all thought it was cool, esp with the funky japanese chars all over the keyboard. even the non geeks were impressed.

ps. Maslovsky is a genius.

Deals and Great Z Buys / 2 British sources for cheap SD cards..
« on: February 08, 2005, 03:29:30 am »
Cool, thanks for the info.
I'm relatively new to the Z and gems like this really help when you don't know what you're doing.

Now all I have to do is scrape together some cash, and try to resist going mad and buying a 2GB card instead!

next on my list... wifi!

there is a ByteStor 1GB SD (Secure Digital) MLC Card on amazon with free shipping in uk for £53.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B...1193482-8677435

I'm not sure what the "MLC" stands for, may be multi layer?
Anyone know if this would actualy work in my c860?

Sharp ROMs / Fbvncserver From Cacko Feed
« on: January 25, 2005, 09:49:22 am »
I could only see the screen, no input, but once I ticked the 'run as root' box it started to work ok.
Takes a second or so to update the screen etc though.
