See the "OggVorbisComment" outputs, all tag information are there. So I think kino2 should be able to extract these information and display them. However mplayer cannot extract tag information from FLAC file.

Version 0.4.3 is out!

I tried the latest kino2 and I think I've found one important bug about displaying the tag info of music files:

When I used kino2 to play some OGG and FLAC files, which are correctly tagged with artist, album, track, genre, year, etc informations (UTF-8 encoding of course), kino2 cannot display these information at all by showing blank at all these fileds. However these information of all MP3 songs with UTF-8 tags can be shown correctly, even for the Asian songs that I have, as long as correct font is selected.

So I think probably the display of the tag information of OGG and FLAC were left out, right? Can this bug be fixed soon?

Also I found out another minor bug: everytime when I tried to open a song, if I clicked the UP icon located at the right-most place of the open-file dialog, the directory will jump to the top Document directory. Then I had to clicked several times to go back to the place where I were before.

Thanks a lot!

Software / Kde-pim/pi 2.1.0 Available!
« on: August 17, 2005, 05:56:14 pm »
I installed the latest stable version 2.2.0. It is very good! Fantastic work, zautrix!

I have a question regarding selecting an image file for the photo of the contact in kaddressbook:
If I added an image with the size of 64x64 pixels, the same size as those icon files in kaddressbook, e.g. ic_*.png, the image was shown in a portrait rectangle in detail view window, such that the image looks like being squeezed horizontally. If an image of the wide-to-height ratio of 3:4, the image will be shown correctly without improper scaling. So I am wondering if kaddressbook assumes that the  wide-to-height ratio of a given image be 3:4? It is interesting to see that if those 64x64 icon files, ic_*.png, are selected mannually as photo, they will be scaled improperly, while they can be shown correctly by kaddressbook according to other fields, e.g. male, female, spouse, children's names. Therefore my question is how to make kaddress display logo image correctly? I suggest kaddressbook provide a dialog box to let user properly scale, crop and rotate the input image file.

Another question: what the difference between Photo and Logo in the Images tab when edit a contact? After I specify an image file for Logo instead of Photo, where can I see the picture?

Thanks a lot!

This 2.1.5 version is very nice! Zautrix rocks!

I focused on testing the address book. I found that kapi now can import Yahoo CVS file correctly since many bugs, e.g. Role and Note, have been fixed. Now everything can be imported into kapi without losing any information (thanks to the Note field). I also noticed that kapi now can display person's name in detailed view according to the formatted name which can be customized, this is very good for using kapi in an international environment.

I will keep using kapi and kopi, and report back any bugs that I find in the future.

Great masterpiece, Zautrix! Thank you!

Software / Video Player - I'd Really Like One That Worked

I have a C860 with a Sharp ROM and I junked the built in player because I dont want to encode my movies as .wmv or .asf

I know you said you have tried kino2 but I installed kino2 (ver 0.4.2) and mplayer-w100(ver 1.0.0-1) and they work perfectly.

I stream from DVD through mencoder to compress down into .avi files which roughly work out as 80 to 90 MB per hour of film.  I wont bore you with the details of the settings, but the film is perfectly watchable and the sound remains in synch.

What can I say?  My ROM version is 1.10 JP.  If yours is the same, those versions of mplayer and Kino should work for you too.

regards

Since I am not familiar with hundreds of parameters controlling mencoder, I would really like to know what command line you used to stream from DVD to AVI using mencoder? Thank you very much!

Software / Missing Some Library Files
« on: May 26, 2005, 12:14:55 pm »
Since I am using the backup image from TriSoft.de for C3000, Japanese input method has been removed. But the terminal programs, such as qpe-terminal-ja and embeddedkonsole, need some library files from Japanese input method: libqsfepj.so.* and libkke.so.*. Can anyone here share these files with me? Any of your help is greatly appreciated!

BTW. Why am I unable to input any double-byte characters in above console programs? All input characters become the question mark '?' Anybody has any ideas of how to solve this problem? Thanks a lot!

Where is Zautrix? Haven't seen him and his posts for quite a few days. Is he in vacation?

I installed 2.1.0 today in Windoze 98 machine.
There are missing buttons, menus, etc. in Kapi.
Kopi works right, though.
Is this a known issue?

Let me try kmobilephone again and I'll tell you something (or tell us if you got it working)
I tried it with an older version and it somehow worked, but with weird results too. I don't think there's anything new in last versions, either.
I got a Siemens mobile and there are some specific Siemens commands too, but I'm not sure how to use them...

(I've sent this from my c-1k, yeah!)

When a CSV file is imported, the BIRTHDAY field can be selected to match the actual column of birthdays. But after importing, the actual contacts in KAPI do NOT contain birthday information. I think it was left out by accident.

Please try version 2.1.4 and let me know if it works or does not work.

Frist of all, the mapping function from all columns in CSV data to NOTES is working correctly, great work, Zautrix!!!

Second, I found other bugs in importing CSV:

1) the TITLE field is missing after selecting corresponding title column in CSV and importing the file. I guess the TITLE field when importing a CSV file should appear in the ROLE field in KAPI.

2) After I modified various places of the contacts in KAPI, now I want to quit KAPI and discard all changes. But currently there seems no way to exit KAPI without discarding changes, which means I have to save all changes before exit KAPI, right? One way is to UNDO all changes and then exit KAPI, but if there are too many changes happening, it is not practical to do. So I am wondering if you can add an option when exit KAPI, say:
You are about to quit KAPI and your contacts are changed. Do you want to save the changes before exit: Yes, No, Cancel.

3) In KAPI windows, the left part is a list of contacts, the right part is the details of each contact. Right now, person's name at the detail part is always: <First Name> <Last name>. Since KAPI already has a function to specify the formatted name of each contact (in Edit->Change->Set format name), I think it is perfect to let KAPI use the formatted name of each contact to display the name filed in the detail view of a contact, instead of the fixed "<First Name> <Last name>" pattern. This is because people from different culture have different preferences in displaying their entire names. For example, western people like using "<First Name> <Last name>" but eastern people like using "<Last Name> <First name>". I think KAPI will look more considerate to its users if this feature is added.

4) KAPI's data file "std.vcf" still contains the problem of splitting double-byte UTF-8 characters after importing an UTF8-encoded CSV file. I am trying to figure out how to solve this problem. From what I know, UTF-8 is the encoding mainly used for final saved file, and UCS-4 is the encoding mainly used for internal processing becuase this encoding represent each character, no matter single-byte or double-byte, by four bytes. My guess is that UTF-8 file is read into memory and then converted into UCS-4 encoding. When saving file, all characters are converted back to UTF-8. I will explore this issue more.

Thanks a lot, zautrix!

I have sent you a sample UTF8-encoded CSV file created by Yahoo! Mail to zautrix@users.sourceforge.net. You use it to test KAPI.

Another problem I found in KAPI is that the data file "kdepim/apps/kabc/std.vcf" used by KAPI accidentally breaks some double-byte characters used by Asian language. Therefore I added some Chinese characters in the comment field of the last contact in the CSV file. You can see this problem if you open std.vcf in vim directly.

Let me know if you need more help. Thanks!

I tried 2.1.3 and test the import function of CVS file, the missing "CATEGORY" is added and works correctly. So far I found one more bug:

When a CSV file is imported, the BIRTHDAY field can be selected to match the actual column of birthdays. But after importing, the actual contacts in KAPI do NOT contain birthday information. I think it was left out by accident.

I have another suggestion which I think is critical:
For all columns of data in CSV which cannot be matched to any pre-defined fields of KAPI, it is better use "NOTES" filed (predefined in KAPI)to include all unmatched data such that all information in user's CSV file is kept. Right now KAPI simply discards all "UNDEFINED" data, which may usually lose significant amount of data in CSV file. After importing CSV file, user can manually move unclassified data from NOTES area to corresponding places. Does this sound good?

I found a BUG in the address book:

When I used the address book to import a CSV file, I was asked to match up each colum of CSV file to corresponding field supported by kapi. This is done through choosing a pull-down menu at each column. But I found out that one field is missing: CATEGORY, to store the categroy that a contact belongs to, such as Family, Friend, Business etc. Since my CSV file was created by Yahoo! Address Book, it contains a column of CATEGORY which is also supported by KAPI. Actually this bug exists in many early versions of KAPI but I forgot to report it. Now I started using kdepim seriously and found this bug stays in my way to start.

Another question is: the email client currently does not support cutomized encoding options, right? how about just add UTF-8 support because it is the easiest way to support multiple languages since kdepim support choosing customized fonts.

Zautrix, Good Work!

Can you please send me a problematic file as an example?

Software / Utf8-aware Terminal
« on: April 26, 2005, 11:09:06 pm »
The terminal application I am using right now on my C3000, qpe-terminal-ja_1.5.0-3_arm.ipk, seems not supporting UTF8-encoded file names. I am wondering if there are any terminal applications which support UTF-8 encoding?

Also the file manager application, TreeExplorer, cannot display the files names containing Asian characters. Are there anyway to allow me to specify which font to use in TreeExplorer? Or are there any other file managers supporting cutomized fonts and encodings?

Thanks a lot for any hints!

Zautrix, you are sooo fast! Good guy!

I just remember that my locale.conf is still set to English, let me go home and try other language options to see if the problem can be fixed. I also don't know why the input method works for other component programs of kdepim than the Address Book, it's really really weird!

I will report back to you anything I find.

********** VERSION 2.1.2 ************

Fixed a problem closing the alarm dialog on Zaurus with "OK" button.

Fixed a problem when importing data from Outlook with mutiple categories set.

Changed display of days in datenavigator:
Birthdays are now blue, not dark green.
When todo view is shown, no birtdays are shown and days with due todos are shown blue.
When journal view is shown, only holidays are shown and days with journals are blue.

Added Backup options to global config:
You can create now x-daily backups for KO/Pi, KA/Pi (for file resources only, file resource is the standard type) and PwM/Pi ( all files you will open ).
It is recommended to use another HDD/Memory card for the backup directory. If (very useful on the Zaurus) the specified backup directory does not exist you are asked if you want to try again to create a backup. That makes it possible to insert your memory card in the Zaurus and then trying again.
The backup is created when the application wants to save for the first time on a backup-day. You can specify the amount of backups and the day interval of backups.
