Accessories / Case Suggestions

I use the Piel Frama carry case for my sl6000. It is the standard 'zaurus quality' (can't be beaten).

If it is closed, you have to apply quite some pressure on the cover before the SD card in the pocket touches the screen. However in theory it is possible.

To remove the sl6000 you open the cover and slide the pda upward. There is no chance the device slips from the case when it is closed. Since the leathet fits quite thight around the device, chances that is slides out of the case while it is open, are small

The producer also makes screen-protectors. Don't know if they make them for the sl6000 as well.

Piel Frama just started to produce the case (beautifully handcrafted). Find it under the Sharp models at www.pielframa.com

I cannot say much about the clamshels. I know the pictures from their website, but have not seem them in reality. The case only adds a few millimeters in the height and width of the sl-6000. It indeed becomes somewhat thicker, but it does NOT look bulky at all. I have the impression that they added some extra material over the screen area, which gives better protection.

Hi,
Well, I did not find a broken SL6000 for Piel Frame to serve as a model, so I sent my own beloved one. And guess:

I got it back and Piel Frama made the most beautiful case for me  . If you want to see it, you will find on their website. Search for the SL-6000 amongst the Sharp models.

Again, it is really beautiful, and very neatly handcrafted of real leather. If you're interested go to www.pielframa.com where you can order it online.

(PS This is no advertisement, I 'm just very happy that finally there is a company which makes a case for the sl-6000)

Hi,
Piel Frama (www.pielframa.com) produces beautiful cases for PDA's but at the moment they do not have a case for the sl-6000 (unfortunately). I've contacted them and asked if they have plans to start producing for this model. They would be happy to start making such a case, but they need a model of the sl-6000 for a couple of days.

So my question is, is there someone who has a dead sl-6000 which could serve as a model. And are you willing to send it to Piel Frama (Spain). It will be sent back.

6000 - Tosa / Who has a 6000?
« on: May 04, 2005, 06:25:25 pm »
Hi.
My sl6000 came to me in december 2004. I was one of the lucky ones to buy at Ebay when the prices where extremely low (don't even dare to name the price). At the moment I use the Sharp rom. Not because I like it but becasue it uses all the features of the machine. Since I'm not experienced in programming, the OZ roms are not within my reach. I do experiment with the 3.5.3, but there are too many problems with it for me to abandon the sharp rom. The problem with the sharp rom is that it tries to automate too many things (e.g. collect all audio files in one list, maling it impossible to distinguish between different tracks).

In addition to the qpe filemanager and terminal, I've installed qpegps which I use with a Fortuna Xtrack CF GPS receiver. Works perfect. Sometimes the Xtrack is not recognised. I take it out the zaurus, change the switch and put it back in and restart gpsd, it works again (something like a reset action by changing the switch).

Furthermore I've installed TextMaker, which is way better than Hancom Word (but it is not free).

I'm still looking for a nice case. Unfortunately Piel Frama (spain) does not produce cases for the 6000 (yet). The ones for the older models are lovely. I am trying to get in contact with them to find out if there is a chance that they start making cases for the 6k as well.

What do I use my Z for? I travel a lot with public transport. The Z is brilliant to make notes, answer e-mails, listen my mp3's, read documents, make minutes of meetings. Also I use it to track hiking trips and I'm going to use it for tracking ice-skaing trips I'm going to make next winter (wit qpegps).

The best of the Z6k: linux, screen, speed, keyboard, wifi, robustness, expansion slots
Missing: a nice belt case

6000 - Tosa / Weird Behavior Of Wifi In Sl-6000
« on: May 04, 2005, 05:36:18 am »
Hi,
I want to report some weird behaviour of my sl-6000L. I am using the Sharp Rom 1.12 with no special tweaks.

The other day, suddenly wifi stopped working (small icon in systray showed red arrow)  . I had that once before and rebooting solved the problem. However not this time. I found out that starting the network applet did not load the modules (prism2_usb and p80211) and dmesg reported that 'hub.c could not attach devices' (cannot recall precise error messages). Becoming somewhat desperate I reflashed my 2-days-old nand backup: no effect. Flashed newly downloaded SHARP rom: no effect. Formatted in maintenance mode: no effect. Take out the battery for some time: no effect, etc, etc  .

Just before I was going to throw z6000 in the WindowsBin I tried the ZAURUS TEST option (10) of the maintenance mode (reset with d+p key, screen 4). This menu has a couple of scarying options, one of them being CheckWLAN (9). Running this option made the beautiful wifi-green led (had no seen it flashing ever since the problem started) blink at me and gave me hope. After closing the menu and resetting/rebooting the red arrow in the network applet has disappeared and wifi worked again (just in time)    .

I have no idea what caused the problem, and how to avoid it in future (or how to solve it in an easier way).

Hope this info is of some use for zauriers who run into the same problem.

Placing the modified personal.jar in /home/QtPalmtop/j2me/lib, didn't seem to do the trick.  I still got the old error.

Warning:  Mounting your ROM in read-write mode can FUBAR your device!

In order to get the personal.jar file to work, I had to mount the ROM as rw and then copied the modified personal.jar file to /usr/QtPalmtop.rom/j2me/lib/.   I switched the ROM back to ro mode and tested.

This worked for me on a sl6000 with sharp rom 1.12, to connect to mysql!

This is because the required class is not included in J2ME, Personal Profile

This is the work around (a bit dirty), but I can use it to access MySQL on SL-C760

1. locate the personal.jar file (/home/QtPalmtop/j2me/lib)
....
10. and replace the orginal personal.jar with the new one.
11. try again and see if it is working
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=76218\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I've tried this but the error message still comes up. If I open the new personal.jar file on my desktop, it shows the java/sql directory with all files. The personal.jar file in /home/QtPalmtop/j2me/lib is a symlink to /usr/QtPalmtop.rom/j2me/lib, which is a readonly file system. So I removed the symlink and put the new personal.jar on /home/QtPalmtop/j2me/lib.

Might it be that java still looks into /usr/QtPalmtop.rom/j2me/lib, or that the classes in sql are not seen due to version differences? I use the Sharp ROM 1.12.
Is there someone who solved this problem on a sl6000?
Thanks

6000 - Tosa / Screen Resolution With Java App
« on: January 24, 2005, 01:09:14 pm »
Hi,
I've a weird problem. I installed MinIDE. If I start the app with the button in the panel, it opens in 240x320 resolution. When I start it in terminal, it opens with 480x640 resolution.

runminide is a script that starts the java app like this:
Code: [Select]
evm -cp /opt/QtPalmtop/java/minide.jar -XappName=runminide minide.Ide
Is there a way to start it in 480x640 resolution?
