OpenBSD / Anyone Tried Yet On A 3200?
« on: April 06, 2006, 12:09:20 pm »
Hey all.

My last Z was nicked last year when i was mugged, after finally getting the insurance money i have a shiny new 3200,(typing this on it).

I'm of course wanting to put OpenBSD on it ASAP, likely after the weekend, but i'm wondering if anyone's tried it yet. i'd be wanting to install over the whole disk

Would that pose a problem, sure i saw thar  some of the stuff from the ROM was moved during the openbsd install.

 thanks

If it's a different app to the one you're thinking of i've used "guten" on my home pc, and wil try it out on the Z a soon as i get a chance.

It's a python app and it works  great on my home box. Hope it works on the Z. or is this the gutenbrowser that you're referring to?

OpenBSD / Living With Openbsd 3, Ports That Seem To Work
« on: March 20, 2006, 07:13:33 pm »
Hey guys,

No access to my Z right now (I was mugged near the end of last year and i lost it!). Got a new one on the way (3200, hopeing nothing much has changed so i can get back to running OBSD asap).

Anyway, before i lost my old one i was looking for a battery applet, that's not dependant on a Window manager, preferably uses hints to go into the system tray (i was running fluxbox and it worked find, but i needed a battery monitor).

Anything in the ports tree? or anything not too dependant on something else?

This may be off topic in this thread, but since it was about working apps i thought it about right.

also:

Octave appeared to work
mutt, irssi, zsh, screen, dillo, konqueror embedded, rxvt, xpdf and a bunch of others all workeed fine for me (this was using a recent snapshot back in november, so should be fine still).

Has anyone played with getting MPD (music player daemon) to work? if so any luck using it with tremor intead of libogg?

Ta.

OpenBSD / Backlight?
« on: October 28, 2005, 08:39:52 pm »
thanks, wsconsctl does work. however it has precisely two values at present

0% and 100%, 100 is full on, 0 is barely useable i find. (this is with the snapshot released yesterday)

is this just me? or does it need work?

the display.brightness attribute on the other hand does appear to work, display.backlight is the aforementioned

i think i'll end up trying a key-binding in X somewhere for one display.brightness+=20% (that's the increment), and one display.brightness-=20%

Thanks barryg, helpful as always.

(if anyone can tell me where in england to get a usb-host cable, then almost all my troubles are over)

I just tested this:

It works in the console, perfectly, however it doensn't appear to work with X. perhaps that needs fixing?

Thanks

OpenBSD / Backlight?

I'm puzzled about this still. I've found nothing in the docs about changing the brightness of the backlight, is it actually possible?

I ask as it's very useful to turn it down to save battery, but then back up when you need to use it in brightish light.

also, is there a way to rotate the screen without changing xorg.conf?

Thanks

OpenBSD / Can't Mount Cf Card
« on: October 28, 2005, 11:35:54 am »
Hey guys, i didn't get some of the replies until just now, but i worked it out myself,

disklabel /dev/wd1 told me that the partition i was looking for was i (i knew that c was the whole disk, but wasn't sure if it could be mounted if the device wasn't partitioned).

I've now set up hotplugd to automount it, though i'm tempted to use amd instead (i've used automounters in linux before for the same purpose.

Thanks for the help.

OpenBSD / Can't Mount Cf Card
« on: October 25, 2005, 05:39:22 am »
Hey,
I've installed the snapshot (as of the 23rd oct i believe). and i've been configuring it to my liking. However, i've hada problem mounting my cf card.

I know it's /dev/wd1c, it's fat32 formatted. however, there's no mount_vfat option for mount, and mount_msdos gives the error
Code: [Select]
mount_msdos: /dev/wd1c on /mnt/cf: Inappropriate file type or format
is it possiblt to mount this drive? or am i going to have to reformat it fat16?

I need to use it on windows (at Uni), and linux at home, so ffs wouldn't be suitable.

apart from this little hiccup i'm very happy with it.

One other question. does anyone know if they're working on autorotation? I don't use it often, but it would be handy.

I know pdaXrom has it, but i think they use a different mechanism (they have a shell script that runs when it rotates, OBSD's is in the xorg.conf).

thanks for any help.

One quick way to verify this is to boot bsd.rd, install openbsd38_arm.ipk and
click on install OpenBSD icon.  This will load the bsd kernel and you can
verify if your wireless card is detected. (ifconfig wi).  There is no WPA support in
OpenBSD.  Hostap is supported in wi.
I'll have to check this over the weekend. i need time to mess around.
no WPA at all? that's a crying shame, WEP is shit.  I know WPA isn't industrial strength, but it's a damned site better than some of the other options.*sigh* i suppose there's always IPsec...  I'm surprised that WPA wasn't on the cards for OpenBSD.

Althought i'm mainly to be using the Z as a workstation (openbsds massive
network/crypto support would be very handy here). I also currently use it to
play music while my mp3player is out of commission, and turn the screen off for
that purpose to save battery.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=98575\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I use cplay+madplay+tremor-tools audio playing.  There is also XMMS on the
ports tree.
Wasn't asking about whether i could play the music, but thanks for the info, i knew something similar would work.

is DPMS or another method of turning off the lcd supported under the current
drivers? and does the sound driver work well enough to play music?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=98575\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Yes.  Closing the lid, turns off the LCD.
perfect. does it suspend fully (as in no battery drain), or does it only sleep? Hibernate might be the word i'm looking for. I'd rather not have to boot the z fully every time i need to have it off for a while.

How hard is editing keymaps (not just under X) i'd need to add an alt button,
support for the £ sign, and for the braces ({}) being as the z keyboard
distinctly lacks all of these.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=98575\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
xmodmap?
Notice isaid not just under X, xmodmap's fine under X, but in the console it's less useful.

Finally, do the app-launch buttons along the side of the screen work? (i don't
use them much, but it would be nice to know).
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=98575\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Are these the soft keys, No.
Nevermind, i don't use them often anyway. Would be nice, but hardly essential

I suppose the title says it all.

I'm thinking of installing OpenBSD zaurus (i'm tired of waiting for PdaXrom and porting slackware or similar would take FAR too much time than i have right now), on my Z SL-C3000.

a few questions (though the title is the main one).

i believe it's a prism 2.5/3 card, works ok (ish) with default sharp rom. However i don't see it on the hardware support list in INSTALL.zaurus, so was wondering if anyone had used it successfully? If not, could someone reccomend a good CF wi-fi card, and somewhere to obtain it (preferable in the uk, either a shop in london or a website). I'd prefer WPA support and preferably the option of using it with hostap.

Althought i'm mainly to be using the Z as a workstation (openbsds massive network/crypto support would be very handy here). I also currently use it to play music while my mp3player is out of commission, and turn the screen off for that purpose to save battery.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Use An Sl-c3k As A Sidekick?!
« on: September 10, 2005, 11:53:02 am »
For the guy who was looking for a gaim plugin which would connect to itself. I know this isn't exactly what you were looking for. However, if you use irssi, and bitlbee (an irc - im gateway). Irssi has a proxy mode that enables what you were looking for. I use irssi for all my messaging needs. and it's fantastic. I've yet to play around with it on the zaurus yet!

However, if you care about seeing smileys as images (custom smileys don't work on gaim anyhoo), filetransfers (use ftp or email ) and seeing buddy pics (there's a patch for that which saves them to your harddrive, works well i find). Then it's likely not for you.

Just trying to help mate.

im all about some slackware, but why reinvent the wheel?  debian is just fine. debian is slackware with apt-get.  :>
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=76145\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I find the debian bootstrap, being chrooted, is missing functionality, such as direct hardware access, i playeed with it for a while, but after a while i got bored/fed-up and went back to using sharp (it' still there, i just haven't been using it). Perhaps i'm wrong, perhaps not, but i think it's very sub-optimal

Nope! Currently distinctly lacking in ROMs, hence the excitement about the alpha Cacko rom.

Well I havent been on the forum for a while, i'm back now.

Thought i'd join the discussion by stating why I prefer slackware enough to want to use it. (this was originally posted, but lost, so this post may well be not as good. or coherent,)

Well Slackware seems to be a distro that drags people in and assimilates them, you may have heard the phrase "Once you go Slack, you never go back), people like it's simplicity, and it's philosophy, so stick with the distro, evermore.

I'm one of those you see, I like the philosophy behind it, i like the simple package system, I like the fact that it's all as simple and close to how the software was origianlly intended as possible, I like the fact that It's on of the most UNIX like distros available.

On the Package management, it's not hard, especially compared to how some people think. I subscribe to teh view that if you don't understand the basics aobut something, can't be botherd to read ever the README file, then you have no business installing it. If you just check what dependancies a package needs, and install them, then you are set, it will install sweet as anything, and just work.

For those reasons, and perhaps more (I'm picky and perfectionistic, plus i like a challenge ) I'm prepared to try to get the distro in a state to be used as a Z rom,
But, University exams are coming up, I'll have to wait untill i have the mout of the way at least. 4 weeks till my exams, I'll look into it after then, till then I'l happily beta test for any other rom, as a new rom for the 3K is good for all .

May I ask why the lack of dep support is a 'but'(still haven't fixed the q. mark) as an avid slack user i pefer the simplicity of thwat approach, it avoids problems and means you know what you are installing.

I'll certainly consider donating my summer to the cause.

Later kids!
