C1000/3x00 General discussions / New Zaurus Announced: Sl-c1000

I just posted in another thread‚ from the Zaurus. Presently‚ I'm posting from my TungstenC...Just because. I love the versatility in these handhelds‚ and I love just seeing them "work". my next purchase will likely be the Archos Media Player‚ and then I'll see what Palm OS has to offer. If nothing excites me by then. I'll prowl these forums and Ebay and try and go for another Zaurus. hopefully a Clambshell version.

For Sale / Wanted / Wtb - Cf Wifi

Hi. Someone on this list sold me a Pretec Wifi card (Thanks!) for short money. As uninformed to the zaurus as I remain, when I saw it was for the PPC. I admit to being a bit anxious. Nonetheless, I added my WEP info. and I was online in under two minutes! Although my laptop is here. it's cold at the moment, as I'm comfortably web surfing on my Zaurus now, including posting this reply. I appreciate the quick help and response here in this forum.

It's cool the Zaurus is still being produced. I'm aware that there are so many different ROMs that what's available is hardly comparable to my SL-5500. Nonetheless, I'm willing to learn, and will likey try a newer model one day.

Btw, I got a WiFi card for short $$ from someone on this list, and it worked flawlessly. I had to enter the WEP encryption info, and then, boom, email and web surfing was flawless.

Hi. I'm very new with the Zaurus, only using the SL-5500 a few weeks. Are these links in the first post in this section saying that Sharp is still producing the Zaurus? I hope so, because i like the product, and can see myslelf satying with it for a while.

The best bookreader for the Zaurus in my opinion is Opie Reader http://www.timwentford.uklinux.net/

I dont think it handles PDF as those are more of a image than a book.

Hi. I read someplace that Linux (or the Zaurus) handles .pdb format. So I downloaded (previous to this post, Opie from the link above), but wasn't sure what format to use. So then I uploaded a couple of books in that format and I'm all set. Thanks much.

Software / Question About Two Programs
« on: March 12, 2005, 09:10:41 pm »
Hi. I was wondering what the best program is for reading ebooks. I have many in PDF format, that can be formatted to any other format, including HTML, but I was wondering the best program for this purpose.

Also, I was wondering what program(s) were best for encoding videos. I have a slew of .AVI videos that don't work. What format should my videos be in.

Thanks much.

PM'd you with details of which card works with the Zaurus - most do... just lookout for power consumption , range etc issues when you buy.

(See my Sig for one such wifi card).

Compare the PMed list against these available from Amazon:

Thanks for the tip, and thanks, Nilch, for the Private Message.

Hi. When I got my Zaurus 5500, I saw several WiFi cards available, but now can't seem to locate any online ... is one available, or does anyone know what to recommend? I am not even sure if ANY CF card will work, or if they have to be specific to the Z.

Thanks!

Deals and Great Z Buys / Almost New Owner Of Zaurus Sl-5500
« on: February 08, 2005, 07:54:00 pm »
Thank you EVERYONE! My Zaurus should be here Friday. The guy who sold it to me said he put the latest ROM on it, so not to worry about that. Also, I have downloaded the manual for that model, and will read it when time allows, as "flashing the rom" is utterly confusing to me.

Since I just bought three 1gb SD cards for each of my daily PDAs, I have several 256mb SD cards just waiting for a purpose. :-)

I just want to make sure I store data (music, photos, etc.) properly, so that when I get the CF WiFi Card, it can stay in the PDA the majority of the time.

I'll keep reading the boards between now and Friday, and the manual as well. Folks have been good to me - the Zaurus was for $60, and one guy sent me a free Treo 650! (I belong to a writing group, and said I needed more PDAs for the experience.) The free Treo arrived today - I just have to set up the phone aspect of it.

I can't wait for the Zaurus to arrive, as I do love a challenge!

Hi. I have another question.

Do I need two CF cards? You mention a 16mb card to "flash the ROM" - and then a SD card (likely for storage - music, photos, etc.?). Will the 16mb card be something used rarely, so that the CF WiFi card can pretty much stay put?

CF cards are very inexpensive on ebay. I just want to make sure which ones to buy.

(Sorry - but I'm new to the Zaurus, and want to have the correct (best) accessories) for the most efficiency possible.

Thanks again.

Hi. I got a great deal with the SL5500. I should have it in a week or so. I'm writing because I've been told that the ROM has been updated or upgraded several times. I just want to know where I should go for this information, and what accessories would be best for me to buy.

Also, since I've also heard that Sharp has dropped out of the USA market, I'm curious as to whether or not they are still producing them at all.

Lastly, are there any good deals on later models of the Zaurus?

I'm greatly interested in PDAs, and the various OS's.

Thanks much!
