Software / Games & Development

Anyone know of some good games for the Z?  I\'ve seen the ones at the ZSI.  Are there any more out there?

Also, is there any way to set up a development environment in Windows?  Cygwin, maybe?

Sharp ROMs / Clean ROM Update Time...Which ROM?
« on: October 27, 2003, 06:53:54 pm »
That\'s what I figured.  I went ahead and reflashed OZ, but took the plunge (after reading OZ FAQ) and formatted my SD as ext2.  Everything is working better now that the symlinks are correct.

Sharp ROMs / Clean ROM Update Time...Which ROM?
« on: October 23, 2003, 05:50:41 pm »
I feel like I\'ve soiled my ROM installation.  I installed OZ 3.2 back in May and since then, I\'ve played around, adding and removing ipks from feeds left and right, half of which never seem to run when I click their icon (ex. Mail-It, Opie-MediaPlayer, XMMS, finally got Kpacman).

So, I\'ve decided it\'s time for a clean install.  I still have OZ 3.2 on my CF card and I\'m pretty familiar with that process.  Should I stick with that ROM or venture out?

I did not like Sharp 2.38 much at all.  I want to be able to sync and use SCP to copy files to my Z over my wireless network.  I also want to be able to install ipks easily using feeds through the package manager (is this the easiest way?).  I also want to be able to install apps easily on my SD card (is this the same as /home on SD or do all ROMs have this functionality?).  I also want to be able to show small icons in my launcher and be able to make the best out of the small screen with small fonts.

Based on all of that, which ROM should I use?  I have not tried any other ROMs except Sharp 2.38 and OZ 3.2.  From what I understand, these are my best options:

1.  Sharp 3.10
2.  theKompany ROM
3.  Cacko\'s ROM (would I have to reformat my SD?)
4.  OpenZaurus 3.2
5.  OpenZaurus 3.3.1 (unstable)

If there are others that I don\'t know about that include the features I\'d like, please list them (links with pretty pictures and easy installation instructions are good, too).

Also, I would like to erase my entire SD card when I do this clean update.  Without a PC-based SD card reader, is there an easy way to do this on my Z (is it as easy as rm -a /mnt/card/*)?

Accessories / USB Host CF Card

They are both a bit pricey (around $150), but would seem to be very useful.  Does anyone know anything more about these?  Do any (or all) of the ROMs include drivers for USB devices such as mass storage, keyboards, mice, etc?  I also have a Creative CardCam.  Does anyone know if I would be able to access it through USB using one of these cards?  It requires a Windows program to download images from the camera, rather than showing up as another drive.  Would there be support for devices like that?

Software / Problems installing some Apps

When using the package application, shouldn\'t that create the links for you?  I usually use feeds (from URLs).  Do the ipks download to tmp or something?

Software / Problems installing some Apps
« on: October 16, 2003, 01:11:47 pm »
I have been using OZ 3.2 since around May.  There are several features I like, but wish that certain applications installed correctly.  I\'ve had trouble with XMMS, MySQL, ScummVM, Strategic Assault, and QtMail.  I notice that it can\'t create alot of the symlinks when installing ipks.  I\'m trying to install to my SD card.  Am I doing something wrong?

OZ has been pretty good to me and has a few features that I like, but I\'ve been reading good things about the tkcROM and even the Sharp 3.10 ROM.  I have also read a few good things about OZ 3.3.1 (dev version).  Is it time I switched ROMs?  Will a new ROM help these app installation issues?  If so, which one should I switch to?

1.  OZ 3.2 ROM
2.  OZ 3.3.1 ROM
3.  tkcROM
4.  Sharp 3.10 ROM

I like the OPIE features.  Will I be able to use them (Today w/ plug-ins, Launcher w/ small icons, etc) with ROMs 3 and 4?

Does anyone have a list of pros/cons and feature differences for these 4 ROMs?

Also, I use WiFi alot with my DLink 660W and would prefer to sync wirelessly.  I have used Qtopia Desktop and Intellisync, but they both have issues.  Any way I can sync PIM data w/o using these?  I use WinSCP to transfer files, so I\'d just need to sync with Outlook.  Is this possible w/o Qtopia/Intellisync?

Accessories / USB Host CF Card

I found these products the other day and was wondering if anyone had any experience with using these in their SL-5500:

http://www.interpocket.co.uk

They are USB Host CF cards that claim to allow you to attach USB devices such as USB input devices and USB hard drives.  I have been wanting to attach my Archos Jukebox Recorder 20 MP3 player to my Zaurus and use a Zaurus MP3 player to play the files stored on it as if it were a mounted drive.  I know, it seems redundant:  Why play MP3s through a seperate device when the purpose of the first device is to play MP3s?  Simple, I\'d like to use my Z as the front-end rather than the Archos.

Since the Archos works as a USB hard drive and the Z doesn\'t work as a USB host, I found these cards that will add that functionality.  I was just wondering if anyone has tried them or had any more information on their use with the Z.
