5x00 Hardware / Z Case- What Are You Using?

What do you keep, carry and/or use their Z in?
Where can I get one?

For a while (over a year) I've had my Z in a small metal tin, padded with a mismatched sock, in the front of my backpack.

Of course, I wasn't trying to use it during that time, and as the case is a bit larger than the Z I can't (well... don't want to ) use that any more.

I took a look at the "Ripoffs" cases at Holster Depot, but they seem to just use stiff foam and ballistic nylon.  I'm thinking that I might just sit on the case or cram a couple oranges and a bottle of wine on top of it in my backpack and break the screen or something.

Is there a more durable case that I can get or make?  I do have access to some metalworking facilities, but a pre-made solution would be much easier (and not take a long time to make).

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / 5500 + Opie Oz 3.5.2 + Usb + Windows == Woes

Does the USB subsystem register your Z as a new networking adaptor
...
...
If it appears, try giving it (the PC end) an IP address (192.168.129.200 for example), and then try ping'ing the Z to see if it's working correctly:

ping 192.168.129.201

Yay!  it works.   lardman rocks!

So for the next person who gets stuck, here's what I did:
(Win2K machine...although probably similar for XP)

1) Install the 3.5.2 (or whatever) ROM
2) Install Qtopia 1.7 on your Windows machine.  Keep the regular configuration (USB, ip addy for Z should be 192.168.129.201)
3)  Put the CD with the drivers for the cradle and Z into your CD drive and then plug in the cradle.
4) Install the drivers for the cradle, then plug in the Z.
5) If you having problems with the Z not being recognized, there are script workarounds, but the easy way is to take the Z out of the cradle, go to the Settings tab, then click on "Shutdown" and then select "Reboot".  Once you see all the text scrolling by as it reboots, put it back into the cradle and wait until it's all booted up.
6) Then go into Start -> Settings -> Network and Dial-up Connections, and you should see a new local area connection (for me it's "Local Area Connection 2").
7) Open that connection up and give it an ip address of 192.168.129.200 (that's the ip address for the PC side of things).  Now click "Ok", etc... to close that dialog (which will apply your changes to the connection).
8) Go to the Z in the cradle and click on Settings -> Network, and select "(usbd0)".
9) Then click on the "Configure" button.
10) There are two checkboxes marked "Automatically bring up" and "DHCP" -- uncheck both of them.
11) Set the textbox "IP Address" to 192.168.129.201  (the subnet mask should automatically be set, but if not, make it 255.255.255.0).
12) At this point for me I started to get dialogs on the PC and the Zaurus asking for permission to create a connection, etc...  Just follow them and allow access.
13)  Things should just sync up.

Hopefully this will be helpful to someone....  ;-)

Notes:
-------------------

* If you're having problems, go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel, then double click on System and click on the Hardware tab.  Under the Device Manager area, click on Device Manager..., then go down to "Universal Serial Bus controllers", click on the "+" to the left of that entry, and look for something with a yellow triangle or an exclamation mark icon to the left of it.  That's probably the Z device, so take a look at its properties to see what error you get.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / 5500 + Opie Oz 3.5.2 + Usb + Windows == Woes

I've tried opie OZ 3.5.1 and now 3.5.2 and I still can't get it to sync properly with either of the two Windows machines at work.

I flashed my SL 5500 with 3.5.2 Opie OZ (64-0 zImage), and I put Qtopia Desktop 1.7 on a WinXP laptop and a Win2K desktop machine.

I've tried messing around with settings for the windows boxes, Qtopia Desktop, and on the Zaurus, but I still haven't gotten it to sync at all.

I've read a few forum posts about usb sync problems with Windows, and I have had a couple of error messages, but even after running modprobe and shell scripts, I have not been able to get a basic sync working.

Does anyone out there have a similar setup that could document the steps to:
- flash a unit
- install Qtopia Desktop
- install correct drivers for the USB cradle (I grabbed mine off the CD that came with the Zaurus originally -- could that be a problem?)
- get sync working between the Zaurus and the computer (via the USB cradle)

??

Oh -- and I should point out that I can't get any connectivity over USB.  I've tried setting the network and sync to various things, but I still can't get a connection over it....

I think that I'm very close, but to be honest I'm not exactly sure what steps I'm messing up.

5x00 Hardware / It Keeps On Resetting Randomly...

Someone mentioned (a long time ago) that this happened to them
...
You might also look at how tightly seated the battery is.

Yeah -- I just put Opie 3.5.1 on it and I haven't had a problem with it resetting yet.

Unfortunately I still haven't gotten it to sync with Qtopia Desktop 1.7, but I think that I found the right thread in the forums and I hope to have it up and working today!

5x00 Hardware / Battery Extender 5600 ? Ebay

I recieved two battery extenders for the Zaurus as christmas presents.

...

It says it works with all Zaurus 5x00 models. . . but does the 5600 use a different power  supply than the 5500?  Has anyone had luck with one of these units?

I have no idea.  But if you send one of them to me I can tell you if it works with a 5500...

5x00 Hardware / It Keeps On Resetting Randomly...
« on: February 06, 2005, 03:18:27 pm »
I have a Zaurus 5500 running with the original software that I've just picked up after having it put away for a while.  A couple of days in a row I have sync'd it with the QtopiaDesktop software on my computer at work, put it into my pocket, and then gone home.

When I get home, the Zaurus boots up and give me the "Welcome to Zaurus" screen.
At least I have a backup of everything on my work machine, but I'm pretty confused as to why the Zaurus is flaking out on me.

I've been wondering if putting it my pocket might be flexing it in some way (??) or maybe it gets cold outside (??) in the chilly NH winter temps, but it's only reset twice and I've carried it in my pocket outside in the cold many times.  The battery looks full, but perhaps there's some problem with the terminals?

I've been trying to copy the sync'd information in QtopiaDesktop to another computer -- just in case both my Zaurus and my work machine die -- but I can't figure out what files to backup.  Are they in the QtopiaDesktop directory or your home directory or ??

Oh, and as a temporary precaution until I get the Zaurus to be a bit more stable, could I configure the software so it stores Addressbook, calendar, todo, etc... on a CF or SD card ?

I've been wanting to play around with OpenZaurus, but until I get the hardware issue figured out I figure that I should just stick with the stock configuration.
