thanks for the reply! im curious where the mark on the screen is? more than likely i would be able to fix the audio jack problem, an if not then i could transfer the screen to mine.

thanks again

busted my screen accidently, i think the backlight is str8 but the screen is most crack-ed. i'm starting to think i might have to try an figure out how to get a new zaurus sl-5500, becuase the name brand screens are so expensive!
it did serve well the 3 years i had it.

so then it hit me, "hey maybe theres another manufacturer of a screen that 'would' work" but alas, it doesnt seem this way.

or maybe its time to upgrade to a new model?

so one more question!

is milkytracker running on any of the other zaurii, an if so how much do those usually go for, cuz i really dont want to pay much more than 200usd. i would really like to stick with something that has a cf 2 &/or sd slots.

thankyou, in advance!

hey, were you able to get a copy?
im not to sure it will run on oz but couldnt hurt trying.

i kinda regret getting so excited over this
for some reason i had thought this was naturally going to be open source
it would be nice if this was open source , the landscape layout just ruins my idea of usablity.
to really be  usefull for me i kinda need the portrait mode .
so.
i'll prolly check back once in a while, i hope he will continue to update & improve the zaurus version & hopefully post it to a feed sometime. . at least so everyone else will be able to play with it.

haha uh i cant helkp but wonder what your on about.??

i jsut realized you probably are talking of milky an if your using the lastest one, its weird, you have to fiddle with the thing in the 1st config page to the bottom right where it say amiga an linear frequencies, at least thats how i got it to work, but if it is the same one you will also have troubles (well more then likely)

i wrote  Peter the other day an he replied saying that it was because he was working on getting protracker mods running, which kinda confused me, why he would write an ipk because i guiess he kknew it wasnt gonna work, it has to do with a drthe au audio driver not working right, an i guess he knew that. i think maybe he was maput off that i wasnt bug reporting, well like i said above  ya know. i get discouraged  especially w because i find bug but can nevedr figure out how to reproduce them, aoh well .

i asked him if he was going to release the source in that same message, i didnt realize that they had already talked about this on the mt forum, an that kinda pisses me off cuz now i know theres no real hope to ever be able to have milky in portrait mode. its kinda retarded having it in landscape mode using the keyboard sideways.

there was a point when i would have settled for anything, that point pretty much came an gone now anyhow i shouldnt be posting any of this cuz im sitting at the airport irratated cuz my rides isnt here. but moments like these give me a knack for cutting through the bullshit an getting to the point of whats on my mind even if it end up regretting it an feeling like a jerk , hehe i'll prolly just come back an edit!!!!

@Ferret the 2nd to last version that should actually work for you  it does for me, its not as stable as 0940 but its very usable an sounds really good to, so an workie wehn you load things up
ez
if you dont have it i'll send it to ya

thanks for your advice i followed it an it wasnt zgcc that was giving my problems with compiling, i actually did have it running properly i guess, i got the same errors from following your advice so i figure it is more related to something i need other than what i have. oh well no big deal. if i was meant to be a 3d graphics ruby programmer, i would have figured this out.

the whole Path PATH path thing absolutely confuses me! i should stick with ruby in 2d.  maybe one of these days there will be a binary of that opengl lib. then the crazy,wireless,3d,qtruby,OSC controller. but for now its only the crazy, wireless, qtruby,OSC controller.
probably going to be named "zOSCRüby" pronounced zee-oscar-ooby.
(still need to finish how its going to work, an if it should have a pattern sequencer) great thing about this is, since hardly anyone knows what OSC is, whenever i finally get it to the point its working good, everyone will still be amazed! AND the big corporate audio software goons will have adapted. so it will seem new!

Ferret-Simpson: Heh.  I'm far from rich, but even I can pull off the ~$10 to send my SD card out for replacement under warranty. Also, from the way it failed I kind of doubt that it had anything to do with a write limit. After it "died" I got nothing out of dmesg on the Zaurus or my desktop when I inserted it. I tried it on a Windows computer which also didn't even blink.  It was like the thing had transmuted from flash memory to a piece of plastic shaped like an SD card. One minute it worked, the next minute any computer I plugged it into acted like it didn't exist.

Actually, this made me think about something: Has anyone had an SD card or CF card die on them that they're *relatively sure* died from exceeding it's number of write cycles? Also, how would such a card act?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=121195\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

not really related to the exact nature of your question but, i had a somewhat similar situation, where i could only read an write to the sd card on my zaurus.
when i put it on my windows box it wouldnt blink either an then i reformatted it on the Z an it was able to finally be seen on my windows box.

this is a nice informative thread! thanks.

i have a couple of questions too.

is there an absolute max that the zaurus sl-5500 will accept on the sd an cf slots?
(like is there any hardware limits that would restrict size.)

also, would one of those: SANDISK SDSDX320489 2GB Extreme III SD Memory Card
) anyone know or think this is compatible?

i would like to have a massive sd card, or if there was a good working sd wifi card (an driver) then i would get a massive cf card instead, cuz i always have my linksys wcf12 in the slot, so i'm probably going to have to go with a 2 gb sd, unless theres bigger?

i mainly just want lots of space to have wav samples, instruments, mods for milkytracker, an ipks so i can install an uninstall them, when i need internal space.
TIA!

oh yeah doesnt sandisk have lifetime warranty on their sd an cfcards?

Why not post milkytracker here, so anyone that wants to try it, can do so?
Some people don't like to have to go "ask" someone if they can try or download something.
Just my 2¢

i'm not positive but i think that Peter did not want it spread around since *it is in testing.

an im only the guy that asked Peter to bring it over to the zaurus, an he did. (rather quickly too!)
i donated a hefty amount of cash, i wanted to show him much it meant to me. since milkytracker is free. but, im the last person on earth a dev would want to have as a beta tester!  i dont know what it is, but somehow i always seem to upset developers when i try to test their programs. (i think i might have some expression/communication issues.)
alot of them think of there programs like they are offspring, (i would too) tho im one of those guys that cant seem to word things right, an it always feel like i hurt their feelings somehow by the way i describe bugs an problems.

anyhow, i emailed him the other day but i think he might be on vaction or away for a moment. i do completely agree with you Jon, and im sure it would bring alot more ppl.

last month Peter emailed me version milkytracker_0.90.40_arm.ipk
(the latest one i have)
and it isnt working right, its a bit dodgy, he had did something to make it run better for some other zaurus users but somewhere it got goofed for me, it took me along time to respond, basically i installed it an it took about 5 minutes for me to figure out how to get it to work (something with the audio driver) so then i rebooted an it was still goofing up so then i put it aside for a month. this version does actually work for me to some degree it is more stable but its weird because some of the instruments are not playing right.

If anyone wants to test the version come and join #milkytracker on IRC (Espernet)

Will contact and test it for Sharp/Poodle, but what files does it play?

Actually, what the hell IS it?
great  a tracker is a composition tool unlike most of what your probably familiar with, instead of scrolling left to right it , it scrolls down, so you make your patterns from top to bottom. on the milkytracker site, there is quite a bit of documents you can get, to help you understand this method of composition. imo its one of the oldest secrets of music making, aphex, squarepusher, bogdan the list goes on an on, have all used trackers for their creations, this tracker has roots to a program called Protracker, made for use on amiga.

there are mass amounts of modules on ftp
modules are the 'song files' they consist of wav samples and sequencing data.
essentially a compressed archive made so that they may be shared among others without any type of dependency problems.

i suggest checking out Wash U's ftp.

i read through and tried to follow the methods to my best ability of this page:
http://s91215199.onlinehome.us/zaurus/zgcc2install.html

       i can get mnt/card/.zgcc and mnt/card/.include mounted
by dropping into root using "su" an doing:
Code: [Select]
mknod /dev/loop[n] b 7 [n]
then come back to user "zaurus" an run the script "mntzgcc.sh"
Code: [Select]
mount -t cramfs /mnt/card/zgcc2Bin.cramfs /mnt/card/.zgcc -o loop
mount -t cramfs /mnt/card/zgcc2Inc.cramfs /mnt/card/.include -o loop

some reason, i cant get them to fully link or get $PATH to look in them, when i run zgcc.sh
Code: [Select]
export GCC_EXEC_PREFIX=/mnt/card/.zgcc/lib/gcc-lib/arm-linux/2.95.2/
export COMPILER_PATH=/mnt/card/.zgcc/bin:/mnt/card/.zgcc/lib/gcc-lib/arm-linux/2.95.2/
export CPATH=/mnt/card/.include/
export LIBRARY_PATH=/mnt/card/.zgcc/lib/:/mnt/card/.zgcc/lib/gcc-lib/arm-linux/2.95.2/:/lib/:/home/QtPalmtop/lib/
export CPLUS_INCLUDE_PATH=/mnt/card/.include/g++-3/
PATH=/mnt/card/.zgcc/bin:$PATH
export PATH
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/mnt/card/.zgcc/lib
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
TMAKEPATH="/mnt/card/.zgcc/tmake/lib/sharp-onboard/"
export TMAKEPATH
ln -sf /lib/libc.so.6 /usr/lib/libc.so
ln -sf /lib/libm.so.6 /usr/lib/libm.so
ln -sf /mnt/card/.zgcc/bin/libstdc++-3-libc6.1-2-2.10.0.so /home/QtPalmtop/lib/libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3

it doesnt show any errors when i run this,
but then it doesnt seem to be looking for anything its suppose to be???

the strange thing is, that while in 1 Konsole tab where an when i run the scripts, i  somehow got it before to see gcc from doing "which gcc"
cant remember how i did it, tho it brung up the proper location of gcc
(And only gcc  )

if i start another tab in Konsole, an do "which gcc" it wont find it at all.
very peculiar!!?!?

i would like to do all this in one sweep from running 1 shell script, or most preferable have it set itself up at boottime. (aiming for that one, but will be happy with the other.)

so im unsure which file i need to be modifying, making or where it would go.
Could i alleviate all this by putting a script of sorts in "/home/zaurus"? or maybe even somewhere else that is rw? maybe like /usr? i would like it to be seperate from important files, but it doesnt have to be.

for over a month now  ive been trying to figure out how to compile this package:
http://raa.ruby-lang.org/project/opengl/
http://www2.giganet.net/~yoshi/rbogl-0.32d.tar.gz

i do imagine some of you reading this, may have seen my post at the bottom in the thread about permissions. no one was answering so i figured i should restructure an make my own thread. i did search too, but i cant figure out what the true problem is!

it seems to me that $path $Path and $PATH are all different things, an now ive gone crosseyed.
[img]http://www.petsadrift.com/grfx/crosseyed.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]
thanks for you time.

if you would like to help betatest milkytracker of the Z 5500 please contact Peter at milkytracker.net @ this address:
support "at" milkytracker.net

we need as many of you who are willing to help.

i would imagine it could also run on a 5600, but am unsure.

other zaurus models might work too.

no , in fact i dont know what your talking about at all really

the file name of the last one i was linked to is
milkytracker_0.90.40RC2_arm.ipk

it is 1,115kb with its dependencies included

fits very well on internal mem.

it does not use floating points.
