C1000/3x00 General discussions / C3000: Finding Working Applications

I _must_ be missing something.

1) Where do I find feeds for the default ROM?  ZSI seems outdated, ELSI doesn't have (populated) feeds, and half the webpages I've been linked to are gone or don't actually have files.  IpkgFind seems to be specific to Familiar.

2) If ipkg is based on debian, it should figure out and handle dependencies, right?  I'm willing to use the command-line, but I'm guessing I need to get working feeds before that will help.

3) my attempts to get something simple, such as libstdc++ (apparently required by kismet) have been frustrating and futile.   Add in kismet and wellenreiter to this list  (they require libraries I don't have, which I then can't find.)

The Zaurus cannot have such rave reviews and strong community support with this kind of experience (I'm an experienced Linux user, I'm willing to get my hands dirty, but this has been an unsuccessful ordeal thus far).  I'm assuming I'm missing something...what?

(I can't jump to an OZ rom until they have support for the C3000...as long as I have the Hancom apps, I'm prefectly willing to jump ship to another rom once it's available)

Help me...what am I missing?

just ssh into it as root, and type "passwd root"

That tells me _how_ I can do something, not _what_ I should do.    What's currently open?  What's currently open that should be closed?

Although I am curious to see what gotcha's exist about closing any of this.

I'm the owner of a new C3000, and I'd like to make sure I've locked it down properly.  I've read that previous Zaurii had (essentially) root FTP with no password, but that is no longer the case.  Is there anything too lax on it that I should tighten down?  I've already installed SSH for my outbound connections.

I'm new to the C3000 and to the general OE/Zaurus community, and I'm a bit behind.

I've figured out how to configure my Z to use a feed (so far only the one on ZUG), but a good chunk of the software doesn't work.  Most of the time the app gives me the "explosion" icon saying it's running....then returns me to the general app interface.  (Examples include Freedoom, XMMS, opie wellenreiter)  Some apps run sideways at a lower res, and usually crash quickly (Nethack, qpdf2).  Still others just report "ipkg problems" when I'm installing (zothello).  Perl 5.8.0 (from perl.org, I believe) refuses to install OR unistall (it's listed as installed, but isn't, and even the commandline ipkg segfaults when touching it)  Perl 5.6.1 from zug worked fine.  Kismet dies saying it can't find libstdc++.  I finally found a version of openssh that installed and appears to work.

I've added /usr/local/lib/ to my ld.so.conf.
I'm running the default Sharp ROM.

How can I find applications that work on the C-3000?  Is there any way to tell in advance?  Is there any way to diagnose the crashes and possible correct them?

Thanks in advance!

New owner of a C3000 (via Dynamism), and while I'm loving it, I'm brand new to the market, and I'm a bit left behind.  I'm asking my questions in separate threads to avoid chaos.

How do I get the Z to appear as an external USB mass storage device to my Linux (Debian) box?  Every time I plug in the USB cable it starts to sync.  (something I'm not currently trying to do)

My linux box should be configured to handle it...it treats my digital camera as mass storage with no problem.
