Android / Android T Mobile Phone Convert
« on: October 23, 2009, 03:49:02 pm »
I have the G1 developer phone and the Google Ion (the dev phone given away at the Google I/O conference, mostly identical to the MyTouch) -- both manufactured by HTC.
They have replaced completely my SL-C3100 which I am keeping just for experiments.

My only gripe with them the inadequate hard/soft keyboard.
Any day now, I am waiting for the delivery of the Motorola Cliq whose keyboard is excellent (I tested it during the Motodev Summit).

Then I will probably sell either of the phones, and maybe the Z.

Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker / Zaurus Is Dead .... Long Living Zaurus Aka Pc-z1
« on: August 28, 2009, 02:52:23 am »
I suspect this device is a no-go for both the US and the European markets.
- large, not pocketable whatsoever
- no wireless capability (2.5/3G) and no easy way to add one
- keyboard too small for touch typing, too large for thumb typing
- screen undersized, again
- no pivot for ebook reading/multimedia

This old "I am a dictionary, but I might possibly fit other purposes, too" concept would have stand a chance only if there were no advanced open Android and Maemo platforms/devices in the meantime.

As it is now -- thanks, I'll pass.

For Sale / Wanted / For Sale: Sl-c3100 And Unlocked T-mobile G1
« on: August 24, 2009, 03:40:56 am »
My backup SL-C3100 has not seen much of use for the past half a year, so I am offering it for sale at eBay as part of my end-of-summer clearance:
Sharp Zaurus SL-C3100 + Extras

I am selling there also my backup Unlocked T-Mobile Android G1 phone and (slightly offtopic) Canon DSLR gear.

At this point I can only ship to continental USA, unfortunately...

Any questions? Let me know.

While this is very sad, indeed, some valuable lessons could be drawn out of it.
Briefly and imprecisely: It certainly comes to show the challenges of steering a completely open development both hardware- and software-wise with no viable carrier-acceptable business plan, in this imperfect world.

Just look at the struggles of the arguably less open Google Android with the carriers (e.g. regarding tethering).
Android SDK is already at version 1.1 BTW and both my G1 phones  (one of which is the dev version) perform flawlessly.

I'll be all over it.
I've got the new G1 phone which I am configuring as we speak.
I'll also have some time on my hands the second half of Dec. for Zaurus-related ports.
Cortez, what's the best way to contact you?

Accessories / [test] Solio Solar Charger With Zaurus Cxx00
« on: July 23, 2008, 02:26:56 am »
Good job, keep us posted!

Quote from: Jiba
Hello,

I've just bought a Solio Classic solar charger (http://www.solio.com/charger/explore-solio/what-is-solio.html). After charging the Solio battery via USB, I've successfully used the PSP charging tip (sold separately) to charge my Zaurus C1000.

I'm now testing the use of the solar panel. According to charger and Zaurus specifications, 1 hour of full sun should give roughly 1 hour of Zaurus battery, which would be very nice :-)

The very first results are encouraging but need to be confirmed ; I'll probably be able to give more information on that in a few days !

I might be going around noon on Sunday until closed, time permitting (as I have to help family members with their Linuxes...)
It will be fun to make a Zaurus owners meet -- post a note here or PM me.

Android / Google Android Installable Image Available!
« on: December 29, 2007, 07:36:18 pm »
Good job, cortez!
I just bought a used C3000 eBay specifically for experiments with Android and now flashed your image.
Looks quite quick... the network and rotate-to-landscape hacks would be nice to have setup.
How does one kill the GUI and get back to the shell prompt, what are the navigation keys (as the touchscreen is not working)?
Can you describe in more detail your build setup, especially the differences to original japanese one, if any?

I'll be spending time on this during the holidays, and even intend to install OpenEmbedded...
Thanks!

I want something future-proof when buying something new (of course).
Same here, unfortunately nothing comparable has shown up yet.
And Sharp seems to be manufacturing at least the C1000 still (as Trisoft reported recently), so for the time being, and a couple of more years we are good.

What I like most about the Zaurus is it's form factor (the clamshell) in combination with it's size and extensibility. Most of the time I only use it as an agenda. For the rest of the time I try to develop a bit here and there, and experiment with all kinds of software and learning Linux. It's my mini-laptop I guess.
Same here.
In addition, I have all my development e-books from Manning and the Pragmatic Programmers along with many magazines from the ACM Digital Library. I have both Ruby/Rails and Java/Ant prototyping environments conveniently setup (thanks for your jamvm, classpath and j2me packages, btw). I also ripped many of my CDs and transferred them. I often use the dictionaries, etc...
I sold my notebook as the Z. mostly replaces it. For real work I have a dual Opteron workstation at home.

What I hate is the inability of synchronisation with my work agenda and mail (Exchange server). If that could be fixed a new Zaurus is definitely my PDA for the next few years.
Well, sync is not possible with Lotus Notes used in my current project either... not that it will make you feel better... I am currently looking into web/server based calendar options to sync with KO/PI.

The prices on the Z. are really falling down, btw.
I bought recently a SL-C3000 with Ambicom WiFi and Socket Bluetooth cards as a gift for my girlfriend's birthday for $275 from the US eBay.

So I would say get a Cxxxx model, let me know if I can be of assistance...
