For Sale / Wanted / Sold: 5600 In Great Condition + Accessories
« on: May 28, 2005, 06:04:01 pm »
The whole kit has been sold.

Code: [Select]
5600 Zaurus (good to excellent condition, no screen scratches)
  with:
     * cradle
     * a/c adaptor
     * screen protector film
     * clear flip cover
     * original stylus
  - Linksys CF 802.11b wireless adaptor
  - 256MB SD card
  - 8MB CF card
  - Otterbox hard box (waterproof w/padding inside)
  - 2 extra screen protector films
  - 1 extra flip cover
  - 3 extra Sharp upgrade stylii (metal + plastic tip)
Has the PXA 255 CPU, not a 250 like many of the 5600's

The Zaurus has a few light scratches on the body, but nothing major.  I haven't carried it around much, so that has saved it wear and tear.

Everything comes in the original packaging, except for the stylii, SD card, and CF card.

I haven't managed to track down the software install CD for the Zaurus (moved recently), but I know it's here somewhere.

I'd like to get $275 OBO (includes shipping by FedEx Ground or USPS priority).  May be willing to split up--contact me if you are interested in accessories, but will not sell off the cradle a/c separate.

My eBay ID is 'utahraptor' if you would like to check my feedback.  I'm in zip code 22181 (northern Virginia).  Willing to meet along Metro if you are in DC area and want to meet for a hand off.  I'll knock $15 off the price if you pick it up.

Can take Paypal or USPS money order, or cash if you pick it up.

Thanks--

:blush:

Looks like I should have done some more reading before I posted those questions about the "clean install".

  I suspect why I am confused has to do with me not realizing that the updater.sh is version specific for the kernels/initrd.  I guess I'll have to go over that ground again.  Dang this stuff is complicated-- even for a UNIX geek.

I also see that I am not the only one having mp3 troubles, SharpROM or otherwise, so I'll do some more reading to see if I can track down an answer.

But I would still appreciate comments about the ROM feeds...

Thanks--

Pardon the length.

I'm a long time UNIX type but this ROM business has got me a bit confused.  So, I have some general "theoretical" questions, I'd guess you'd call them.  I had the Zynergy ROM installed on my 5600--it was on there when I bought it. I kept that for quite a while, but have been trying to learn more about the other UIs/ROMs lately.

According to what I read on the Sharp site, to get the 1.32 ROM installed, you have to have the previous version of the Sharp ROM installed. However, I was able to install the Sharp ROM directly after having Opie/OZ installed. So I am wondering about that. Second, the Sharp ROM seems to still see some of my pkgs from the Opie installation as being there--like it didn't really overwrite the pkg db or the tab settings. These don't run of course, as they were all installed in root.  However, other packages that I installed previously (such as the Qt nethack) on the SD card do still run. This also strikes me as weird, since I know how Linux is about dependencies.  <head scratching>

I guess the real question is: how do you get an absolute clean install from a ROM flash?  Or can you?

I am of two minds about Opie vs GPE on OZ (haven't gotten farther than these 2, the Sharp ROM and Zynergy). GPE seemed a little snappier, but was quite bare. Opie seems like it's getting/had more attention from developers, but I had more trouble with dependencies with it.

Which ROM(s) do folks think have the best (read: "complete"/well-built) feeds out there? Any comments about which is getting more developer attention? I really don't care to set up my own toolchain and compile packages--that's not my cuppa. I can live with a little instability since I want to mainly use the Zaurus for mp3, ssh, doc reader, and games rather than for PIM (that's on my smart phone).

Lastly, I have not been able to get mp3 files to play with the Media Player. I get the error "Unable to play this file." I am guessing it's a codec issue, so I attempted to install libmad and also VLC, but had (of course) dependency problems. Is there any way to get logging/verbose/debug messages out of Media Player?  (Or should I ditch it and switch to something else?)

I'm glad to see the forums here a well populated.  The dearth of warm bodies at eterne.net/zaurus kinda had me worried.

Any advice appreciated--

A couple of things here. Most of what you want can be done with the basic SHARP ROM and its associated Qt GUI. You could try Open Zaurus ROM (3.5.2) and its Opie GUI, but it is still a bit unstable and needs some understanding of linux file structure etc.

The Mac OS X sync is the issue in both of the above cases. The SL5600 was only supplied with PC sync S/W. However there is a site that has got "ZMacSync" running, but it is still in its infancy but will do simple PIM syncs. See URL: http://www.dsitri.de/wiki.php?page=ZMacSync This only works with the SHARP ROM.

There is also this:

[a href=\"http://www.lucid-cake.net/osx_zaurus_usb/index_en.html]http://www.lucid-cake.net/osx_zaurus_usb/index_en.html[/url]

And the latest version of TrollTech's Qtopia Desktop syncs with OZ/Opie.  Their FAQ claims they would be releasing a ROM in the last Q of last year, but I didn't find it on their site.  There is more info here:

http://www.trolltech.com/developer/faqs/qt...html?cid=22#q15

I had set my Zaurus aside for a while because of other stuff I was dealing with, and am just getting back to it, so I have not used either of these tools yet.  Currently I have OZ/Opie, but I am trying others before I settle on one.  So far, I do not like the dependency issues I have had with OS/Opie.

I have a PC that I use for a game box (I know, the horror!), so I am not so concerned about the sync issues, as my PIM data is really in my smart phone.  I want the Zaurus as something more than an iPod/something less than a laptop.
