For Sale / Wanted / For Sale: Picsel Browser For Zaurus

The upgrade site is gone now.
I have picsel-browser_1.1.2_arm.ipk
This is the upgrade only file, do not bother to download it if you don't already have Picsel Browser SD card.
I don't see any problem with "sharing" an upgrade file that was available freely online for an obsolete program.

I looked into this further and you may need this update *.zip file. (It includes picsel-browser_1.1.2_arm.ipk)
The following files are in this ZIP.
Code: [Select]
07/28/2005  04:40 PM               845 picsel-autorun.sh
07/28/2005  04:40 PM         2,271,749 picsel-browser_1.1.2_arm.ipk
07/28/2005  04:40 PM            38,456 picsel-install-aid
07/28/2005  04:40 PM               852 picsel-install-aid-en-gb.qm
07/28/2005  04:40 PM               648 picsel-install-aid-ja-jp.qm

General Discussion / What Happened To Streamline Cpus?

So I try to access Streamline's website ( http://www.streamlinecpus.com ) and I am greeted with a 404 error.  I do a google search and don't find a direct link to the site until the bottom of the first page when it used to be at the top.  Have they been down for a while?  I hope it's nothing too serious.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=162534\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I tried them a few weeks ago, with the same result.  I presumed they must have crashed and burned along with the Zaurus sales market.

For Sale:

Picsel Browser for Zaurus - search the OESF forums for various descriptions about this amazing piece of software that lets you view MS word files, PDF's, etc.  For example:

https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=12436

I used this without any problems on my SL-C3000 with the Sharp ROM.  It *may* work on other Sharp-based ROMS, but I make *no* guarantees of that.  But I will guarantee that it works with the Sharp.

I'm selling it for $100 on the included 256MB SD card.

Any questions?  Please ask!

What version of Picsel Browser is on the card?  Is it 1.1.2?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=162513\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

The filename on the card indicates 1.1.0, though I vaguely recall that there was a downloadable update at one point.  I'll dig around and see if I have the update file.

Nokia Tablet / Thekompany.com Is Porting It's Progs To The 770!
« on: February 25, 2006, 11:15:00 pm »
Quote
Hey folks,

I've been watching the 770 stuff carefully for the last little while as I'm looking to it for my next venture purchase. My antiquated RCA REB1100 is aging ungracefully lately and I've had my eye on the 770 as a Ebook reader on steroids upgrade.  One of the things I've been dissapointed about was the lack of PIM and productivity software available for it right now.  I know they aren't positioning themselves in the market against pda's directly but at >$350usd I would REALLY like to get some productivity work out of the thing when I do get around to buying one as well as fun and games.

Soooo I was VERY excited when I checked in for some software upgrades at www.thekompany.com and found that they are busy porting their embedded programs to the Nokia 770 platform!  This is HUGE great news as thekompany.com offers PIMS and productivity software that is every bit as good as ANY software on the market for any of the Zaurus models!  Okay, I know it's sad but I own EVERY embedded piece of software for both the SL-5500 and clamshell models that they offer.  Together they account for about 60-70% of the progs I currently use on my Zaurii. So yes they do cost money (no freeware here) but they are all very reasonably priced for what you get - I've never regretted a single purchase I've made with them yet.  The moment they get the basic PIM's ported I'll be a  new 770 owner.  The rest of their embedded offerings being ported will be just the icing on the cake. =)

By the way - I have no connection whatsoever to thekompany.com in any way shape or form. I AM as I said already a very happy customer however.  The only negative about the company I can think of is that if you ever need tech support you will find that the gentleman who responds to all emails (I think he's also the president) is named Shawn and while you'll get good support you'll find he has all the personality of a rock. The good news is however that you purchased the program and intellectual support of their product not someone to make you feel good about yourself.

Maybe I'll be a 770 owner sooner than I thought!

One thing you'll want to do is to make sure you look at the screen of the 770 you'll purchase *before* you lay down the cash.  I bought a 770, mostly for ebook reading... and discovered, much to my dismay, that the LCD backlighting system is really, really bad.  I mean, simply awful.  There's a tremendous amount of inconsistency - a large dark area on the left side of the screen, and awful stage-light effects and darkening on the right.  So much so, that reading an ebook with dark text on a light background was just horrible because of the dark and bright spots.

Just a one-off problem?  Nope.  All of the other ones at my local CompUSA had the same problem.  Then I started seeing other comments about the same problems online.  You can see examples of other people's screen at [a href=\"http://www.internettablettalk.com/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/62/cat/504]http://www.internettablettalk.com/gallery/...hoto/62/cat/504[/url] , http://www.internettablettalk.com/gallery/...hoto/53/cat/504 for example.

Maybe I'm just spoiled by the C3K's screen, but I ended up taking my 770 back for a refund.

I'm wanting to get Picsel Browser for my C3100. I have it on my Palm, and it works great.
I tried Conics earlier last month to buy my C3100, but they don't accept money orders.
I don't use credit cards, and only have a savings account, so paypal isn't an option either.
It comes on a Panasonic brand 512mb SD card. Anyone know where I can buy this?

I have the version that works on my Palm.
It came from a samsung phone, but I have no clue as to how to "convert" it to Linux. It's a *.prc file.

Thank you,
Jon

I bought it through Conics last year - very fast work on their part.  Picsel is an amazing piece of software, and far better than the versions available for the Palms.

But unless something has changed, it came on a 256MB, not a 512MB card.

Nokia Tablet / So - How Many Of You Have Case Cracks?
« on: February 10, 2006, 10:18:30 pm »
There's a long thread about cracked cases over at  InternetTableTalk

Well, I checked my 2-day old 770, which has never been dropped or otherwise abused.... and it has the now infamous crack, as well.

I'm curious how many other people are running into this.

I would like to know how/where to get an SSL enabled mail client for the 3100.
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I think the e-mail client from [a href=\"http://pi-sync.net/index.html]http://pi-sync.net/index.html[/url] can do this.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=97933\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

It can - I've been using it with SSL.

The OM/PI client is improving, but it still has some user interface oddities - for example, it would be nice not having to confirm each message deletion, have it cache messages, etc.

If I understand correctly, I can use the phone as an actual modem and only get dinged for voice data..is this generally the case?[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=88285\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Short and simple answer: NO!

Digital cellular uses so-called speech codecs for audio transport. These are specifically designed for speech and discard most anything in the audio spectrum that isn't needed for that. So hooking up an analog modem to it might produce some modem-like noises at the other end, but it will be impossible to reconstruct the data from it. Rumour has it that very low speeds (i.e. FSK at max. 300 baud) do in fact work, but it's not something I have tried myself, so I can't vouch for it.

Best regards,
Chris.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=88310\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Well, except your short and simple answer isn't correct.

Modern mobile phones almost invariably include the ability for the phone to act as a modem.  It doesn't make a whit of difference that in a digital phone system the bandwidth is filtered to those used by the human voice - because that's precisely what landline systems do, as well.

When I was with Sprint, I used my digital cell phone to dial up modems with the phone's internal modem all the time.  Now that I'm on Verizon, I use their 1xrtt system on my phone to get 144Kbps net connectivity, as well as being able to dial into terminal servers that have standard 56K analog modems on them, on a regular basis, when I'm out in the field.  And it all works perfectly well.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Cacko3k Feedback

Hi,
I seem to have encountered a problem since installing Cacko 1.23beta1, I've only just noticed it and am sure it wasn't always like it; but it seems several programs such as Kino2 and the Sharp MusicPlayer and VideoPlayer are unable to save their settings.
For example the Sharp MusicPlayer fails to recall which folder was open when it previously quit and Kino2 won't save any changes to its preferences.

Is there one folder where all these type of programs store their settings? It may have simply become read-only somehow. Eitherway I'm not entirely sure what is going on and would appreciate some assistance!

Thanks in advance!

I've had more or less the same problem.  Occasionally the /hdd3 partition will become read-only.  I've had it happen immediately after performing a resume, but also sometimes when I'm in the middle of working on something, like typing a document in Hancom.  It's truly bizarre.  I can't find any consistent reason for it.

So I just remount the partition as r/w, and it works fine again, until the next time it happens.  ;-)

Software / What Is The "best" Mail Program?
« on: June 15, 2005, 09:21:58 am »
Quote
There are no good native mail apps on the Zaurus. The original one is OK for pop, and if you only maintain a small mail inbox in IMAP. It crashes and burns if you load it just a bit too much.
The kopiemail client is all-around terrible, but it will handle a bigger IMAP inbox. If you want a client that's actually flexible and usable, you're probably going to have to run X, and the responsiveness will suck. Plus the fact that the Z only has 64MB onboard. Yuck.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=84307\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

The GUI based mail programs that I've tried on the Z certainly are terrible, but there's always Pine.  :-)

That's what I use for my IMAP client.  The only thing missing is TLS, but as I connect to my mail server via my cellphone, I'm not as worried about that as I would be if I were using a public WiFi system.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Anyone Used Conics.net?

I was pointed to conics.net by someone on this forum? is it a fairly reputable site? Why are the prices so much lower, than say streamlinecpus, or dynamism? Not to offend anyone who works for them(if anyone does) but their site doesn't look overly professional, so I was just curious.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=83795\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I just purchased the Picsel Browser for Zaurus from them.  Paid last Saturday, and it showed up the next Friday.  Nice and quick!  Especially going from Japan to New York.

Hi All:

I'm running an SL-C3000, with Cacko 1.23 beta 1.  I just purchased a Socket Rev H bluetooth card. and used the Network app to set it up.  Everything works fine - I paired with the phone, can connect via DUN, etc with my V710 phone on Verizon.

The strange part is after a resume/suspend cycle.  Once I resume, the Network applet no longer appears at the bottom.  Even if I remove/insert the bluetooth card, it doesn't come back - in fact, sometimes when I do that, I get a popup message that the card is "Anonymous Memory".  Removing and reinserting again eventually gives me the correct message.

After the card is recognized again, I can run the Network application from the Settings tab, and it works fine - until the next time I suspend, when the applet disappears once more.

Any ideas as to what I should look at, to ensure the applet stays available, and to make sure that the bluetooth card continues to be accessible?

Thanks!

Also - an additional problem I just discovered - after removing the bluetooth card, and reinserting my Ambicom WiFi card, the AmbiCom card is identified correctly when I do a 'cardctl ident', but I can't use the network app to connect - the "Connect" button is disabled, even after multiple ejects/inserts.  I ended up having to reboot to be able to use WiFi again.

To the best of my knowledge, this is a known issue and is on the buglist for Cacko 1.23 Beta 1. I have the same configuration as you with the Socket Rev. H bluetooth card and have the same problem. Hopefully, this will be fixed by iamasmith or maslovsky.

BTW, I have the V710 as well - check out the Motorola E815 on phonescoop. It's similar to the V710 but uses EVDO. It will be shipping in the next month or two.

Believe it or not, it was not too long ago that it was not possible to get that card reliably working on any of the clamshell models. Be thankful for what you have!
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=83457\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Thanks for the response - I did some more looking around, and found a number of other complaints about the suspend/resume behavior for serial bluetooth cards, as well, in other ROMs, too.

The E815 is certainly tempting, but I expect it will be extremely pricey when it comes out.  The V710, on the other hand, is essentially "free" with the NE2 program now.  By the time I get my next NE2 phone, perhaps we'll even have EV-DO where I live.  ;-)
