I eventually got Opera working on my Simpad and it is fantastic. Don't ask me how I did it, though, because it took a lot of faffing about. The main breakthrough was copying the configuration files to the home directory used under opie.

There is plenty of info about installing opera under opie and I think that they pretty much apply to the simpad. I had already installed it before most of the discussion took place but I'm pretty sure it would work if you just followed the current advice.

Just one question, did you compile your own version, or use one of the arm ipk versions available?  If so which one?  That would give a good start and I can write up an install faq or fix the ipk.

Hi

See the links at the bottom of externe.net/zaurus/simpad-bluetooth for the 2.4.25 I use (working mostly fine) and my b0rked 2.4.29 (a couple of hours work - works suprisignly good for so little time spent - I only wanted to have the latest bluetooth stack to try to work around some hidp kernel bug)

The smartcard patch is on externe.net/zaurus/simpad-bluetooth/smartcard - it was done by Juergen but never tested. IIRC it's included in kernel 2.4.25

Have fun.

The patch and header file are not readable - you need to change the permissions on the files:

 simpad.h
 tda8007.patch

Thanks!

Interesting ... I've just flashed my SL4 with a fresh build of opensimpad and got the same problem - stuck on initial calibrate touchscreen screen. Anyone know what has changed in OE during last six months that could cause that?

Touchscreen support changed in the 2.6 kernel - is your build using that kernel?

(Thanks to Frederic Devernay for this info)

If it's a touchscreen sensetivity problem, try suggestion posted on the other thread (changing value in /etc/ts.conf).

I'm also getting mcp: write timeout error messages.

I've tried that but it is not really a sensitivity issue as it is totally non-responsive.  It may be that the mcp issue is unrelated but I don't see any other errors.  Thanks!

I can see the opi "click anywhere" screen but it doesn't accept any clicks.  I can login to the system fine via the terminal and everything works great - the only thing I keep getting is a "mcp: write timeout" anyone know what this is or have any idea how to fix the touchpad not accepting input problem?  I'm running a variation of the 0.9 release.

SIMpad forum / Got Simpad Today-sync Or Wireless Don't Work!

Well, if that's the case, then that would explain why it doesn't work :|

Can anybody confirm if this is true or not?
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

You can use these drivers to get usb-client-mode syncing to work:

[a href=\"http://www.silentservices.de/simpad/sl4-usb.zip]http://www.silentservices.de/simpad/sl4-usb.zip[/url]

but it is impossible for the usb hardware to be used for things like external keyboards or hard drives - it isn't a question of having the right software drivers - the hardware support isn't there.

Let me know if you do get it.  I've developed quite a few smartcard applications and drivers and can probably hack up something quickly.

Is this one of the Simpads from the guy on Ebay who's selling them cheaply?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=85254\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Yes, mine arrived and was in perfect shape.  To answer my own question the  bootloader from hh.org is the blupdater.img

I installed the image from the .fr site - and I can login from a serial terminal - but I can't seem to start  anything on the screen of the simpad?  What am I missing?  I tried starteing qpe as root - but nothing is showing up.

During booting the penguin logo shows up, and then the starting message.  Once the init runs the screen clears and turns grayish / but qt never starts up on the screen.  When I look at the ps process output it looks like qpe is not running.

I've flashed with the normal 0.9.x release candidate and everything works fine (except for know issues).

SIMpad forum / Hh.org Bootloader (where?)
« on: June 21, 2005, 05:42:03 pm »
I have a new, unmodified, simpad and want to install opensimpad.  I read the various postings here, the old forum, and the opensimpad.org wiki.  What I can't figure out is where to get the hh.org bootloader.  Can someone post a link to the actual file they used?  I'm assuming it is one from handhelds.org but I can't determine which one.  Thanks!

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Simpad And Oz
« on: June 19, 2005, 02:04:52 am »
I've been reading the old mailing list messages and posts but I can't figure out if OZ ever considered supporting the simpad?  It seems like at one point they were going to merge the opensimpad project but I've never seen any support for it in the new OZ distributions?

Has anyone tried out the images?  Are they newer then the 0.91 release or different at all?   Any idea what source they were made from?  All I can tell from the filenames is that they were recently compiled.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Jumbo Xqt Package
« on: June 15, 2005, 11:03:24 am »
Here are my experiences with the package.  I initially tried it on the older stock sharp rom and installation finished.  It did report the "this package seems to depend on other packages, please install them" message.  I then installed a version of firefox from pdaxrom.  X worked, but firefox started the "select a new user" dialog and insisted that the "default" user was already in use.  Creating a new user failed because of file permissions.  I then started an xterm (NICE!) and su to root and ran firefox.  It ran find as root.  Eventually I ran into a problem where the screen would not respond to input and rebooted.  After this I got the hd1 error and zaurus would not boot.  I booted to single user mode, reformatted hd1 and reinstalled hd1 from a tar backup.  I then upgraded to the newest sharp stock kernel.  I left the machine in stock japanese  and installed the packages.  Same problem at startup with firefox.  Another file permission problem causes the startx icon to fail after the first shutdown of X - the authority files from the old session are not cleared and can't be over written so X won't restart.  You can force a restart from a shell.  With the new rom I experienced no problems except those related to file permissions.

On another note - does anyone have an idea what the speed difference between running X/Qt and native X (say pdaxrom) is?  I also noticed that firefox refused to do downloads because "not enough memory available"

The package is almost ready - just some file permission changes and maybe inclusion of a few other X apps and possibly matchbox?  Thanks Meanie!!
