Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Post-flash Angstrom Problems

Trying my favorite redownload the files, (reformat the card, probably not necessary), reflash might work for you. It looks like a flashing error to me.

I have tried three different installkits. I will try it again after redownloading the files (though the tarballs' md5sums matched).

Quote
The second error looks like it's missing a module. Also, it seems like there should be a newer kernel available than 2.6.20. All the other models are on 2.6.24 for the stable branch.

I also checked for the modules, and they are there...At least, once it gets to the command prompt...

Quote
Trying the unstable branch may be another thing to try, if all else fails. Asking on the Angstrom mailing list isn't a bad idea either, as the devs don't check these forums.

These are from the unstable branch...There is no stable branch for the collie...This is 2007.12-r19. The only other thing available for the collie is 2007.12-r9. I can try the altboot there and see if I have any better luck or different results...

One other thing, I wonder if it is the 2GB card could be the problem. I thought Angstrom supported a 2GB card, so I am going to try my 1GB card to see if it boots...

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Post-flash Angstrom Problems
« on: January 20, 2009, 02:54:08 pm »
Hi,

I flashed my Collie with the Angstrom-altboot-console-image-glibc-ipk-2007.12-r19-collie-installkit.tgz after verifying the md5sum. The flash was successful, and when I reset and replaced the battery case it came up to prompt me for the altboot password, as expected.

However...

After entering the altboot password, I get the Angstrom boot screen, and the loading bar goes to 50% and stops. It has been sitting in this state for well over an hour.

Did I miss a step here? Is there a fix? I don't know if it is related, I am an Angstrom n00b, but I hit the reset button and had a key depressed (since I could not seem to get a response when it asked to hit a key to enter the altboot menu, and it started booting from the command line. It hung on boot at the following point:

Code: [Select]
udhcpc (v1.2.1) started
udhcpc[947]: (v1.2.1) started
SIOCGIFINDEX failed!: No such device
done.
Starting portmap daemon: portmap.

And there it stopped.

I also used Koen's (very cool) online image builder to create an image. I created an ext2 filesystem on a 2GB SD card, then tried to boot SD from the altboot menu. It loaded the locomo_spi and mmc_block modules from /lib/modules/2.6.20.6, then gave me an error:

Code: [Select]
ERROR: insmod failed
/bin/sh: can't acess tty; job control turned off
/etc/altboot-menu $

Can someone help me get the Z back up and running?

Thanks,

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Upgrading To Angstrom

I really don't know about install methods, but Kexec is a good way to go, IMO, though I don't know if Collie is supported.

The Angstrom stable branch (2007.12) is fully functional AFAICT. I don't remember having any issues with it.

The downside is that some/many packages aren't available for 2007.12, or they're older versions than those in the unstable branch.

Also remember that I don't have a Collie and that this is from an SL-C3100 perspective.

Well, I can comfort myself in knowing that it is more up-to-date than OZ 3.5.4.1.

I tried the upgrade, using the traditional write-to-CF, C-D-Reset dance, but when I do, the lights only stay lit for a few seconds. I did insure that zImage.bin was named zImage, but alas, no joy.

Ideas?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Upgrading To Angstrom
« on: January 18, 2009, 12:05:54 am »
Hey all,

Been a long time. I am [still] running Hentges OZ 3.5.4.1 on my Collie, which is obviously really, really long in the tooth. I was thinking about getting a Nokia N810, but took a look at Angstrom, which is now supported on the Collie. (Unlike the last time I checked.)

So I have gone out and bought a shiny new 2GB SanDisk SD card, and have the 2007.12-r19 installkits downloaded to my laptop.

My question is what gotchas or problems should I expect? I see several issues on the two install pages I found, but the information seems a bit dated...so I thought I would ask here for a canonical list of what does/does not work, which installkit I should use (r19 seems to be all that is in unstable).

What is the best install method to use? Should I do the untar on CF card and C-D-Reset or "transform a small generated rootfs.tar.gz into a big-rootfs.bin for altboot to boot on it"?

Are the 2007 repos up to date?

Is there anything else that you can tell me before I blow OZ away and step into a new world?

Thanks,

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Cf Wireless Cards
« on: September 20, 2007, 09:59:35 pm »
Somewhere along the line, my Ambicom CF wireless card went missing. I was looking on ebay tonight and ran across a SparkLAN Wireless 11g card. I was wondering if this will work with the Collie either under OZ or under Angstrom. Anybody know? Will 802.11g work with the Z's bus?

Thanks,

It would be possible to build uqtreader for you, the qt4-x11 version of opie-reader.

Thanks Koen,

That would be excellent...

Angstrom looks oustanding! Kudos to the devs as usual for making it happen.

I have a question. While I would love to upgrade from OZ, one of the major apps I use (both personally and professionally) is Opie-reader. I have spent the last couple of years gathering hundreds of pieces of documentation via plucker for stuff I use on a daily basis. My Collie has become my mobile library.

I have skimmed the repos, but didn't see a replacement for Opie-reader, which is the only tool I have found that will read pdb files.

Anyone got a good way to either read them in Angstrom or convert them to, say, html?

Also, what browser options are available?

Thanks,

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Opera9 On Oz?

Where can you find Netfront or Cacko's Opera? I went looking for both and came up empty.

Here:
http://web.mol.ru/~zaurus/feed/

Package: opera
Version: 7.25-lite-2

This one segfaults immediately after it comes up. Which is a problem I have had with Opera throughout. I think the only time I have ever had it working was with Hentges 3.5.3...

Package: netfront
Version: 3.1-lite-2

This is looking for libsl.so.1, which I haven't found yet. I think it was needed for geode back in the day?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Angband On Oz/collie?

I've really been kinda itching to play this game. Is there a chance of it being packaged for OZ? I started looking for a doc on how to set up a cross-compile environment and packaging, but didn't find much. If someone could talk me through setting things up, I could have a go at packaging it myself.

Tks,

EDIT:
Also there is an Opera version, I think on meanie's page or in the C1000/3x00 General discussions forums that is optimized for the later clamshells. I think it is Opera 7.55
Look for "Opera, how to install" in the C1000/3x00 General discussions forums.

Thanks Jon,

I have an SL-5500, so this should hopefully work...

Cacko's Opera & Netfront is doing just fine for me. Usually either one of them will render the page correctly.

pdaXqtrom's dillo and firefox works as well, but is slower on startup. Dillo renders pretty quick though.

You can also try pdaXii13 ... heard good things about it. I'm trying it on and off.

I've never had much luck with Opera, and Netfront seems to only have whitepapers and WinCE trials on their site...

Hardware Mods / Sl-5500 Power Questions
« on: November 27, 2006, 09:23:17 pm »
Sorry for the crosspost, I got to thinking on the drive home that this topic would probably be better off here than the OZ forums...

Got a question regarding the charging subsystem on my SL-5500. My daughter's puppy chewed up the end of the charging brick. I have a USB cable charger for use in the car. Since I don't yet have another brick, plugged this cable into a USB port on my desktop machine, and the yellow light came on. I came back down the next morning, and the light was off, which I thought indicated a full charge. But come to find out, the battery was dead. I brought it in to work, where I have another cradle/brick and it charged up. I've always had pretty good luck with it in the car, but I always had a charger to plug it in to. Is there something odd about the charging on the USB side that would drain the battery competely overnight?

Also, I know the power system is the same voltage and similar amperage as the Playstation Portable. I remember a thread saying that you could use the power bricks as an emergency power source for the Zaurus about a year ago. Does the same apply to the AC adapter? Has anyone tried it? I searched the forums and see kind of mixed results and none are specific to the SL-5500. I looked out on ebay and couldn't find anyone selling the power brick...

Thanks,

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Mp3/ogg Woes

mplayer should work, and it can be paused with a keypress.

It is command line of course.

Thanks Si...I don't know why I didn't think of mplayer. I don't mind command line, as long as I can pause it without having to try to suspend from the menu.

Speaking of mplayer on the Z, I found a great conversion script. Over the last year and a half or so since I had my Z,  It was written for the Nokia 770, but you can use it. Its called  [a href=\"http://bleb.org/software/770/]770-encode.pl[/url], about halfway down the page. I have been getting 700MB movies down to around 100MB.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Mp3/ogg Woes
« on: November 08, 2006, 05:55:07 pm »
I'm running Hentges 3.5.4.1 on my SL-5500. I'm having some problems listening to mp3s and oggs. Since my commute is so long, I listen to a lot of podcasts.

XMMS only plays about half of the mp3 files that I listen to (oggs are fine), so I have had to fall back on opie-mediaplayer. This app plays all of the files (mp3 and ogg), but it takes a long time to start up, and I get a lot of segvs...When I stop it, when I try to skip tracks, when it tries to go to the next track, etc.

I have tried other alternatives, like mpg123/mpg321, but traffic what it is in the DC area, I need something I can pause to catch traffic reports. The kernel in 3.5.4.1 has an issue with resuming after pause from the cancel button.

Does anyone either have an alternative player suggestion or a fix for xmms or opie-mediaplayer?

Thanks,
