Linux Issues / Can ANYone sync with the 5600?

In the last 2 days I have at least 12 hours in this with no progress (very frustrated)!

I\'ll be going back to a paper planner (Franklin) for 2004. Maybe I\'ll sell my Z, maybe I\'ll hang onto it and see what kinda software comes out. But, I\'m with you. Terribly frustrating.

I may hang onto my Z... I dunno. Doubt it, though. The PIM software just seems too far behind what I had with my Visor, and what\'s out there these days with the Palms. Desktops, et al. I looked over the OpenZaurus project and Opie. Just dang neat stuff, you know? It\'s down right depressing to think that I gotta shelve my Z because I can\'t a decent calendar or to-do program for it. And after the money I\'ve spent on the thing, I\'m more than reluctant to put more into it to buy proprietary PIM software (e.g. theKompany.com). To even swap out my ROM, I need to throw more money at this thing to get a CF or SD card. I\'m bummed, guys. I\'m really bummed. My Z is cool. Opie and Oz are really stinkin neat. And I lose. I need flexible, configurable PIM that will sync with the same kinda desktop.

Have you tried to sync Qtopia Desktop with Opie apps?Greg

Thanks for the link. Yes, I did try to sync Opie and Qtopia. It didn\'t work. Kinda honked me off (to say the least... I think I broke a bone in my hand).

Got libopie installed, and that allowed me to install the Opie PIM apps.

1. I cannot get back to my original Sharp PIM apps. They\'re gone. Trashed. Dunno where. Can I reinstall those somehow?

2. I cannot get the Opie apps to sync with JPilot. Seems he wants only serial ports.  ???

Greg,

Read this:
http://www.zaurus.com/dev/board/index.php?...?showtopic=7113
It sounds like your problem is Sharps new PIM, so before you sell your Z try a custom- rom with Opie.

Greg

Neat! But... I\'m a little overwhelmed here with newness... I downloaded and tried to install the Opie datebook. It cried for dependencies (all too familiar). So, I poked around a little more...

Should I move to the OpenZaurus ROM that is entirely based on Opie?

Or should I test drive Opie PIM stuff first? If so, is there a basic package that I need to install? Their directory listing of \"stable\" install stuff is overwhelming. I would assume there is a lib I\'d need... other stuff... ??

And then, it syncs with \"normal\" Linux PDA programs like JPilot - via cradle or ethernet connection? That would be awesome.

Got a minute to give me a boost up the learning curve?

Regardless, thanks!

You can backup your data, if you just want a backup...

Yeah, I got back-ups going fine. That\'s fairly easy. But...

...or you can wait for a little while, and then switch to OpenZaurus, which will sync to Qtopia Desktop...

Qtopia Desktop (I\'m sorry, don\'t mean to flame and bash, but) is \"lacking.\" It is terribly rudimentary and years behind the stuff Palm is putting out (the stuff I\'ve seen, at least).

What I need is a desktop pda program to run to-do lists (and manage projects with those lists), a calander (month-at-a-glance that can be read on both desktop and pda), a configurable address book, and ability to do text-based \"memos.\"

I run all my \"planner\" crap off the desktop. So, I need to be able to have the pda desktop running all the time on my LAN. When I pick up and go, I sync with the pda and have all my \"planner\" crap in hand and mobile.

My Z is sorely lacking.

I am shopping.
 1. I\'ll either go back to my paper Franklin Planner.
 2. Or, I\'ll get a pda that has decent sync software for Linux (JPilot worked fine for my Handspring Visor, and then the Visor bit the dust).

Any input you\'d have on Linux-based pda desktops and sync\'ing would be appreciated. I\'ll be googling here for a while.

Thanks for the straight answers. You\'ve helped me a lot.

By the way, I got my Z on my Linux box.  :-)  I installed the sync software on a little used Win98SE machine hanging off my LAN. Then I just connected via VNC. If I get a CompactFlash ethernet card, I could connect the Z to the LAN by itself, and then just bring up the software (Qtopia) in my Win4Lin here on my desktop. But, that still doesn\'t get past the pda limitations of the Z and Qtopia Desktop.

I feel shortchanged.

Thank you.

Would anyone like to buy a slightly used Sharp Zaurus SL-5600?

Hey, Penguin People, gotta question for you...

Can anyone sync a Zaurus SL-5600 with any Linux kernel? The only desktop software out there that I\'m aware of right now is QtopiaDesktop. Is there another?

Here is my dilema: I have a 5600 that I cannot sync with Linux. I can ping it in a term window, but I cannot get it to sync via usb0 (the stinkin cradle). My next and last option is to buy a CompactFlash ethernet card and see if I can get it to sync that way. BUT (and here\'s the kicker), if I cannot sync this unit with my desktop, I cannot use it. If QtopiaDesktop will not work with the 5600, not even with a CompactFlash ethernet card and regular IP on my LAN, then I need to sell this piece of $%#& and get something that will. I like my Z, but I need to be able to SYNC my Z. If I can\'t, I\'m dumping it on eBay.

Anyone out there able to sync???

Linux Issues / SL-5600 Cradel Connect with 2.4.22
« on: November 29, 2003, 01:39:45 am »
Well, maybe you\'re right, Inuyasha. It\'s 1:00 a.m. and I\'m beat. I have my 2.4.22 kernel configured correctly. I can ping the snot outta my Z. I installed the latest greatest version of QtopiaDesktop, and it will not find my Z. No config works. Refuses to find it.

I wish I had done more research before buying this unit. I am SORELY disappointed with Sharp\'s Zaurus 5600. It runs Linux but won\'t sync with Linux. If that is just not the dang dumbest thing I\'ve heard.

Anyone wanna buy a VERY slightly used Z? It\'ll be up for auction soon on eBay.

What? You mean you can\'t sync with QtopiaDesktop?? That\'s a bummer. I am right now in the process of configuring X in Slack to get my QtopiaDesktop set up and ready to sync. But... if I understand you right... it won\'t.  ??

Linux Issues / USB Cradle connectivity to Linux
« on: November 15, 2003, 08:05:53 pm »
I just installed Slackware 9.1 that is shipping with the kernel 2.4.22 and built-in modular support for the Z. I could bring up usb0 (my SL-5600) via the usb cradle and ping it. I haven\'t taken the time to configure X, yet, so I haven\'t actually \"sync\'ed\" with Qtopia. But, I do have a proper ping-able connection that works 100% (no dropped or lost packets).

Linux Issues / SL-5600 Cradel Connect with 2.4.22
« on: November 15, 2003, 08:03:10 pm »
FWIW: I could not connect my Z with RH8 or any kernel that I patched myself per any How-To anywhere. So, I got a copy of Slackware 9.1 that is being shipped with kernel 2.4.22 and built-in (module) support for Linux pda \"network\" connection via a usb port.

It was plug and play. I installed Slack 9.1, plugged in the cradle, the Z, turned it on and...
ifconfig -a        -- brought up usb0.
ifconfig usb0 192.168.129.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
route add -host 192.168.129.201 usb0

ping 192.168.129.201 registered 100%.

I have yet to try a sync with Qtopia Desktop, so I cannot vouche for a true \"sync,\" yet. But, hey, this is progress (at least for me).

Linux Issues / USB Cradle connectivity to Linux
« on: November 07, 2003, 10:58:10 am »
Hey, Chris. Greg here. We have a lot in common...  :-)  Try a search on this site for my login (gregkedro) or go to the Linux forum here on this site and check my posts of a week before last. I also recently bought the same Z you did, and I run RH8.0, kernel 2.4.18-14 (congrats on your geekdom running Gentoo; I\'m not there... yet).

I pulled my hair out and googled my brains out over this. Bottom line is this: kernel 2.4.22 has an _experimental_ driver to get this goofy usb-tcp/ip thing working. No one (to my knowledge) has a 5600 syncing with any Linux system/kernel. Those who do have some connectivity are reporting  problems galore.

My solution: CF ethernet card and sync via my LAN. Since I live in Costa Rica, I had to order one on the net, and still haven\'t received it, yet. So, I can\'t vouch for its functionality. But, it seems far less problematic than the usb cradle included with our new toy.

Let me see if I can answer some things in your post... (I am NO expert; if you run Gentoo, you know a lot more than I do).

Quote
I followed the instructions on docs.zaurus.com

First off, that how-to (I believe) is for the old ROM from the 5500. Things have changed since then.

Quote
I\'m running gentoo kernel version 2.4.20 patched

All my patching didn\'t work. I eventually ran into a post from a guru at RedHat that said, basically, \"Stop the goofey patching and upgrade your kernels!\" I tried installing the 2.4.22 kernel, but because of my lack of knowledge in this area, could not get the modules to load. I eventually got a copy of Slack 9.1 to install on a spare partition I have. Slack is now shipping the 2.4.22 kernel with their 9.1 version. I have yet to take the time to install it, and if I can get my CF ethernet connection working, it will probably wait even a little longer (I have tons of \"real\" work to get done, and have wasted sufficient time on this Z thing already).

I did, though, see the experimental driver in the 2.4.22 kernel I botched on my system. So, I can vouch for that: it\'s in there.

When I have th cradle plugged in and turn on the zaurus I get in my /var/log/message:

I get the same messages and it refuses to recognize and configure the usb0 device. I could _never_ get it to come up. Nothing I tried worked.

Quote
I noticed that the address is 0x04dd/8006 not 8004 so I tried changing that in the kernel setup but it still didn\'t work.

Now, this one was solved by the moderater of the Linux forum here on this site (I believe it was him). Nice fellow. That\'s a change from the 5500 to the 5600 (and a snafu in the how-to). The correct address to use is 8006, although, like you found out, it doesn\'t help a dang bit.

I really appreciate any help

I don\'t know how much help I\'ve been. But, at least you know you\'re not alone. And, if you do find out how to make this thing work, let me know. Otherwise, maybe you can try the CF ethernet thing.  ??

Cheers.

Accessories / Any CF RJ-45 Cards to Stay Away From?
« on: October 28, 2003, 04:30:32 pm »
Hey, folks. I\'m in the market for a CF RJ-45 ethernet card for my Z 5600. Don\'t want wireless (too many war drivers out there, and I like paranoia).

I did a search on eBay and a bunch jumped out at me. Does anyone know about compatiblity issues with the Z? Should I stay away from certain brands, go with others, etc.? Anyone have good luck with one, or bad luck with another?

Thanks.

-Greg
