Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Hentges 3.5.4.1 For Collie

Hi CoreDump,

I'm not having much luck with the latest version either. When I flash, the lights only come on for about thirty seconds, then go out. When I reboot, I get the error message about the wrong kernel. It seems to find zImage fine, and flash that, but not initrd.bin.

Well, check the naming of initrd.bin then

I have exactly same problems. I can easily flash OZ 3.5.4 distribution, but old-style hentges installation fails. Lights come on for 10 seconds, and that's it. I'm using zImage-collie-64-0-20060409201626.bin renamed as zImage and initrd.bin extracted from hentges-opie-image-de-collie_T1-RC4.tar.gz.

And yes, I have double-checked naming of initrd.bin.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Irda Ppp Connection Howto?
« on: September 09, 2005, 07:24:44 am »
You can do that with Opie GUI tools. I'm using 5500 (OpenZaurus) with Siemens S55 phone and GPRS and it works just fine. Here some quick-and-dirty guidelines:

You should find Irda tool ad bottom of screen. With Irda tool you must "enable IrDA" and "Enable Disovery". Check that IrDA tool discovers your phone. (I quess you have done this, because you can beame files)

Next open Network Setting Tool. Using "Add" button create new PPP device with following settings:

Under "Devices" tab:
Modem Name: Irda
Mode device: /dev/ircomm0

Next open "Modem" tab and try "Query Modem" to see, if your modem
is recognized.  If your modem needs special initialization string, you can configure
those here.

Next create new item under "Accounts" tab with phone number and
Authentication info.

I'm using GPRS connection, so I didn't have to worry about PPP Authentication.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Newbie: Proper Upgrade Procedure
« on: May 23, 2005, 02:51:25 am »
Other good rules:

* Don't use GUI, but use ipkg directly on console. You can really
  control where everyging goes

* Don't do "ipkg upgrade". If you have root on internal flash, you don't
have room for that. You may try upgrading system packages one-by-one.

* Install applications on memory card:
# ipkg -t /media/ram/tmp -d sd  package-name
# ipkg-link mount /media/card/packages

I'm currently using OpenZaurus 48/24 kernel on collie, but I'm not using
ram storage on anything, so I'm thinking of moving into 64/0 kernel. I have
all documents and installed software on SD card. I bought
512 Kb SD card (those are cheap), so I have CF slot free for upgrades or
wlan card, if I can find cheap one.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Easy Dialup, How?
« on: May 09, 2005, 06:36:25 am »
I have Dialup connection (GPRS) working through IR and Siemens S55 phone.

Each time I use Internet, I go through Settings -> Network -> ir-gprs -> start/Stop. Is there easier way to start dialup connection?  I installed opie-neworkapplet, and it shows eight network devices, but not
my dialup connection.

System: SL5500 + OpenZaurus 3.5.3 (Opie)

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Ppp On Oz 3.5.3 / Gpe
« on: May 04, 2005, 04:30:10 am »
This one helped me with my ir-connection. Your just have to find out
what device your modem uses (/dev/ttyS1 or something like that).

----------------------------------------
http://www.kryogenix.org/days/2005/01/06/c...ctionOpenzaurus

On the Z, go into the Network applet in Settings
Say “Add”
Select “PPP” and say “Add”
In “Accounts“, say “New”
In “Connection name“, say “GPRS“. Then add the phone number, as described in the link above, and say OK
In “Devices“, say “New”
“Modem name”: “IR phone” (or whatever you choose). “Modem device”: /dev/ircomm0. “Flow control”: None. “Connection speed”: 115200. Say OK.
Say Ok again in the Configure Modem screen
Now make sure your new “gprs” connection is selected in the Network Settings screen and say “Start/Stop“.
Align the Z and phone and say “Start” to start the connection.

----------------------------------------

You also may like to install "picocom", so you can test your modem:

# picocomm -b 57600 /dev/ircomm0
. . .
AT
OK

5x00 General discussions / Restoring The Zaurus To Factory State
« on: April 26, 2005, 03:46:08 am »
I'm still a bit lost here, so let's see if I have got this right: Sharp roms (and relatives, like Cecko) have Qtopia, OpenZaurus has choise of Opie and GPE.

So you are using OpenZaurus, right?

Here's another newbie. It's now my 3rd day with sl-5500. Yesterday I updated it into Sharp rom V3.13 with this package:

V3.13 for 5500

It seems that in that process I lost Office software (commercial?), Java and some games. Is it possible to find those packages somewhere. This is not big deal, because I will use my zaurus primarily as on-the-road email/ssh/webmachine).  Games would be nice though.

V3.13 upgrade was just exercise. It seems that cecko is the right system for me. I think I will flash that this evening.
