I agree with adk and richk.

Although I use a 5500 I had a similar experience when I bought my 5500. I am competent with linux and thought I could handle any issue I might forsee. I promptly learned that embedded linux is a whole new beast. And after flashing half a dozen ROMS I went back to Sharp until I fully knew what I was doing.

Hindsight being 20/20 I would have stayed with the stock ROM until I knew exactly what I wanted, then I would have looked at other ROMS.

Well, there is a specific problem with my SL6000 that got me considering Cacko: Gmail requires SSL for pop service. I do NOT use my 6000 for playing--it is (believe it or not) my main computer! But having to login to GMail instead of being able to download into QtMail is a real pain. I installed STunnel which, supposedly should allow QtMail to download from GMail--but no luck so far.  Any help?

You don't even need a browser to read gmail. You can use Sharp email client with stunnel to read gmail via SSL. I do that myself.

[NEWBIE speaking: please forgive my cluelesness...]

I have a Zaurus and don't know much about anything...

I understand that QTmail can't download from my Gmail account unless I enable SSL . Now QTMail is built in to the ROM so I would have to rebuild the ROM (whatever that means!).  So i had given up on this idea.  But you seem to suggest that installing "stunnel" will allow me to download mail from Gmail using the standard Qtopia QTMail? I have downloaded stunnel. Now it says something about openssl-0.9.6g library.  I am downloading this too.  But people are rather cryptic in their instructions here!  Would I put this openssl-0.9.6g  in the \libs directory?

Well, I'm back! Installed the ipk's for stunnel and openssl. Configured GMail for pop-access; set up the smtp and pop server in qtmail (using 465 for SMTP port). Qtmail gets to "connction established" with gmail and then justs sits there. Help anyone?!
