For Sale / Wanted / For Sale: C1000, Incl. Case (pf), Wi-fi
« on: December 15, 2005, 09:29:46 am »
I think I'm finally going to kick the habit. I almost always buy these things as a geek toy rather than a useful tool.

I've had this C1k since about September I think. So, it's almost new. I've changed the ROM a few times, but did a NAND restore (using the Tri-soft backup) on it before boxing it up.

The case is a brand new Piel Frama case, black. I also replaced the stylus with one of those nicer, heavy weight kinds. Not a big deal, but I always disliked the cheapy plastic one it came with. Oh, and it comes with an Ambicom wi-fi CF card and the usb host adapter.

Software / Rdesktop Help
« on: November 18, 2005, 10:48:19 am »
I'm running a C1000 under pdaXrom and rdesktop is a great little application and it works great, too great really. When I launch it in fullscreen mode, I'm literally in fullscreen mode of my remote desktop and I see no way to close it or exit out of the application.

Strangely, pdaXrom does not seem to have man pages (or at least, the man command doesn't work, that could be me having a PATH issue). In any event, I can't find any documentation on rdesktop to give me any clues.

I have a C1000, for which there isn't a current Cacko ROM, so to go back to a Sharp-based ROM, the only option is to do a NAND restore. (From what I can see anyway).

After recently going back from OZ to the Sharp Rom (using the Trisoft NAND restore), I've noticed the option to add/remove software and there's a "via networks" button.

Clicking that button shows some options to add servers from which to (presumably) download and install software.

The question is, which server(s) can I use?

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Pdaxrom Vs Sharp/oe Based Roms
« on: June 07, 2005, 03:07:40 pm »
The best thing to do is to try them out for yourself. It's not something you have to fear, but you do need to be aware of the need for good backups and knowing how to restore to your current ROM, i.e. typically doing a NAND restore. That sounds worse than it is, it's not hard at all.

I've tried the OZ for my C1000 and it's pretty nice, but the lack of a good browser and email program made it frustrating for me. Those two things seem somewhat intrinsic for any kind of networkable PDA. I considered pdaXrom and it's something I probably will try eventually as I really prefer the X GUI, but I'm going to wait until RCs become less beta-ish and more done-ish.

And as an end-user and not a developer, I don't mind waiting.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Changing Default Opie Wallpaper
« on: May 18, 2005, 06:53:44 pm »
Ah.. figures. I wasn't paying close enough attention. It seemed to me like that setting wasn't changing the whole background, but rather the background of the tabs themselves.

This is much better. I had 3 good candidates for backgrounds and now I can use all three.

Thanks.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Changing Default Opie Wallpaper
« on: May 18, 2005, 06:20:41 pm »
Well, I discovered the default wallpaper in /opt/QtPalmtop/pics/launcher and basically just grabbed a new image, resized it for the same size as the original (640x460), copied it to this directory, backed up the original and renamed the new image opie-background.jpg.

And this worked fine, my little desktop looks great.

However, I'm wondering if there's an easier way. The appearance settings only changed themes for buttons and such, font and font size, and some theme colors, but there wasn't anything in there about the desktop background.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / New Kernel Akita-20050505 Installation Pb
« on: May 18, 2005, 03:15:28 pm »
I don't know how I managed to do it, but some use of -force-depends or nodeps got it installed.

If you'll notice, the libts is installed, it just doesn't have the right nomenclature, i.e. 0.0 vs. 0.0cvs20050505 (looks to me like the version number and the date got garbled in the libts dependency listing for libqte2).

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Question Regarding Wifi Config In Oz 3.5.3
« on: May 18, 2005, 12:36:47 pm »
Yes, that makes sense. How do you restart networking then? Just go into the configuration app and click on the restart button or do you do something from the command line?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Question Regarding Wifi Config In Oz 3.5.3
« on: May 18, 2005, 11:52:02 am »
Using the Network config within Opie, it appears that you can only have one configuration for WiFi at a time, meaning that if I set it up for work, including WEP and TCP/IP settings, I have to completely reset it when I go home.

With the Sharp ROM and it's network configuration, you can have multiple profiles, each with their own SSIDs, WEP settings, TCP/IP settings, etc.

Am I missing something or is this just the way it works right now? I'm guessing it's just a current limitation, but I hadn't seen anything posted after doing a few searches and I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing some magic setting somewhere.

C1000/3x00 Hardware / Piel Frama Case Update
« on: May 13, 2005, 11:27:03 pm »
Nice. Glad to see that level of quality control. I'm a total sucker for nice cases (my Vaja case for my iPod arrives soon), so I'm definately keeping an eye on these PF cases.

Ah.. I'm up and running with mine too. Damn this thing is nice. Anyhoo.. I'm taking a wait and see approach with the ROMs. Looks like things are still fairly early, but I'll probably check out OZ when I get a chance.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Shipment Delivery Record?
« on: May 13, 2005, 06:10:22 pm »
Maybe less actually, maybe even closer to 24 hours. I realize shipping works out to abourt $50 with DHL, but I still figured it'd be a few days.

Of course now I gotta wait for Amazon to deliver my charging cable. Price Japan might be no frills, but for the price it was worth it, IMO.

I'm in a similar situation. I just purchased my C1000 and I'm pretty sure it won't come with the english conversion.

I've seen a link to the conics site with english conversion instructions and the one for Stuart Bouyer's script, but both of these are specifically for earlier versions of the C series, 860 and earlier. I know the devices are similar, but which is the best one to use, i.e. least likely to cause disaster.

Also, I read about some kind of internal conversion that comes with the C3000. A simple command you can run as superuser to switch between English and the hybrid. Does the C1000 have similar functionality? I've looked but I haven't seen it.
