X/Qt / X/qt Preconfigured With Apps
« on: May 15, 2006, 01:50:12 am »
2 minutes 30 seconds to start FireFox after X/QT has loaded on a C-1000 running cramfs from SD w/ 64 mb swap.  What are other peoples launch times?

~1 minute to load http://www.cnn.com/

1 minute 20 seconds to load X/QT from hitting the StartX button.

Is there a QT version of Links or can the X version be included in this package?

I am happy to report that the C-3000 automounter is working beautifully on my C-1000.  After install I just had to eject/re-insert the SD card.  After rebooting it did the mounting that I could not do manually.  Yay!

Slowness aside, this is really really cool.  Thanks Meanie!!  It has been relatively painless in comparison to other Zaurus things...

I restarted my Z.  Now I need to remount the cramfs images.  How do I do that?  I know I do it with automounter, but I'm not sure what the protocol is.  Can someone give step by step instructions or link to them?

Thanks,

Louis

Hey,

I did the following:

1.  Installed Cacko 1.23 on a C-1000.
2.  Formatted the SD card with mkfs.msdos /dev/mmcda1.  Made a 128 mb swap file on the card.
3.  Copied the base, apps, and install script to the SD card through a USB connection w/ the zaurus
4.  Ran the said install script, they both installed to root of the SD card
5.  Ran the ln fs and gdk-pixbuf command from previous reply.
6.  Ran my first X program w/ "xlauncher gaim"
7.  Ran other programs through the menu and through "xlauncher [prgm name]"

Things that didn't work:
GAIM (segfault error)

Things that worked super-slowly:
Gimp
Free42
FireFox
Dillo

That's all I've tested.  I don't have a graphical menu for X/QT - only a menu option in the main bottom left menu.  I'm going to try restarting my z and seeing what happens.

Sharp ROMs / Pc Connect Fried My Usb Port?
« on: May 14, 2006, 01:27:44 am »
Okay!

On the Zaurus I formatted the SD card with

mkfs.msdos /dev/mmcda1

Now the port on my computer is fine again, but the Zaurus mounts 46 different drives when I plug it into the computer.  Any help?

A restart fixed it!!  Why would that happen though?  Should I try to connect the zaurus again... hmmm, well what can it hurt....

It's my powerbook's port that is the problem.  I don't have a way to test the Zaurus port.  I could try restarting this computer though...  I don't think that will help since the port isn't even putting out any power I don't think.  I'll report back on trying a restart.

Hey,

I tried to Connect my C-1000 to my computer for the first time, to mount the SD card.  My computer is a 12 inch powerbook.  When I hit okay in PC connect utility on the Zaurus, about 8 windows popped up on the computer saying it didn't recognize the format of the SD card.  So I used the Mac OS X disk utility and I formatted the SD card to "Unix File System."  After it formatted, I tried copying over a folder of MP3's and a 180 mb .avi file.  Either during or after the transfer (I'm not sure), the Zaurus put itself in "off" mode, I guess because I hadn't touched it while waiting for the files to transfer (very obnoxious).

My computer reported a "device removal" error.  After that, I tried to get the zaurus to connect a few more times to no avail.  Then, I tried putting in my CF card reader to transfer the files that way.  But the card reader wouldn't work.  Neither  would my USB  mouse on that port.  It appears to be dead.  Has this happened to anyone else?  I'll need to send my computer in for repair (luckily I have AppleCare).

How should I do things differently in the future?  This really sucks, that I can't get to my SD card directly, that my USB port is fried, and that the Zaurus shuts off in the middle of a file transfer.

Thanks,

Louis

"Create a swap file on sd so the xqt can use it.

I am running 16 because i don't use too much.  then turn on the sd swap file

with your memory applet."

How do I do this part?  I know a swap is something you use your hard drive like ram (that's my impression anyway).  But how do I do this exactly?

This sounds like what I needed.  So I do a fresh install of Cacko, then start these instructions?  Also, I don't have an SD card reader for my computer, so can I do this from a CF card and just replace /mnt/card with /mnt/cf ??

Thanks,

Louis

Of course I've read Meanie's site, but it doesn't make any sense if you aren't familiar w/ linux.  I am in the process of getting to know linux, but I'm not there yet.  I wish there was a "type this, do this, type this" step by step method.  I wonder why someone hasn't made a backup image that already includes X/QT ?  I don't know what a cramfs image is.  Could someone explain that?

It sounds simple to list -

Cacko 1.23
X/QT
FireFox (to do websites that opera / netfront won't)
Gaim  (QPE-Gaim has been giving me trouble)
XPDF (to read pdf problem sets.  qpdf2 doesn't list equations properly)
AbiWord (nice for typing things up)
Scite (the pdaxrom text editor?) (to do any programming/scripting)

Nothing too demanding.

I have a 1 GB SD card and a 32 mb CF card.  I can use a 256 mb CF card for installing stuff, but it won't be there permanently (digital camera).

As long as I can get sharps player to handle mp3 and aac, I don't think i'll need Xmms.

Thanks,
Louis

Hello.

I have a C-1000.

2.  I downloaded X/QT Jumbo to a CF card

3.  I opened the .ipk on the zaurus, it said "installing"

4.  The zaurus hung

5.  I restarted it.  Upon restart, zaurus reported the package installed and i had a new menu and new icons

6.  want to install firefox.  can't install ipk from pdaxrom feed.
