Zaurus - pdaXrom / Xfce4 Finetuning
« on: February 09, 2007, 11:02:09 am »
Hi everyone

I've always been a big XFCE4 fan on the desktop platform, and I think I would love a PDA with XFCE4. Realistically though, I only have a c700, which I am sure is too slow to run XFCE4 and X apps at a decent speed. On more modern Zs though, how is the speed? Is it really usable for everyday work or is it more like a fun toy?

Cxx0 General discussions / C700 Is Unstable And Slow
« on: February 09, 2007, 10:04:28 am »
I own a C700 with a 2gig SD card in it, and a Symbol wireless CF card that is pretty often in it.

I use OZ/Opie, and I usually always have the latest release candidate available.

No matter what, my C700 is always very slow and very unstable.
I cannot browse the web at all using the web browser, it is way too slow and eventually crashes.
I tried putting the SD in and creating a swap file, but it does not seem to help much.

The package manager also seems to hang all the time, especially when I try to install packages (to SD or not, does not seem to make a difference).

Is this common with the c700, because of a lack of ram maybe?
Or is it plausible that my unit is defective? If so, is there some application I can use to try and test the memory in the unit or something?

What should I try? I would love to use my Zaurus for work but right now I spend much more time rebooting it, then fscking the SD card because the Z crashed without unmounting it cleanly than using it..

Is there any money management/budget app in the latest OZ feed currently?
I read about qash, jabp etc but haven't had luck finding something in the feed...

task-* packages are safe to remove - they are to make installing easier.

"ipkg remove one two three for five" - where 'one two...' are packages names

Ok then I'll remove everything that depends on them, I was wondering if it was safe to remove packages like task-opie-base-pim and stuff like that

Nobody can tell me what to remove to properly uninstall all the PIM stuff at least? it's pointless to have it + have kopi/kapi too..

Is there a safe way to remove all the Opie Base PIM since I use none of it..even better, is there a way to find a OZ/Opie with NOTHING installed other than the programs to change the settings ? No games, no apps, no PIM?

Or is there a master package I could remove that would remove all of that?

Thanks

Choice is good - but not when it comes to repositories, unless there is something really wrong with what is currently used.

BTW, are you colorblind?

Hello,

You're welcome ! I am glad I was helpful to you.

If you can part with a 950 mAh that'd be good too - if you can't never mind.

I would have no problems donating a few bucks towards acceptable hosting.

I'm seeing this problem too, but with pretty much any package.  I have a sl5500, with a kingston 1Gig SD card (which I have formatted to ext2 and moved /home and /opt to to make space for apps)
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=125407\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I had similar problems, then found out after much playing around, my SD's fs was corrupted. I unmounted it, fscked it, fixed all the errors, remounted it, and ipkg has been working fine so far !

Sorry for the issues everyone... I've just been slammed at work.

I'm going to call dreamhost tomorrow to see what's up... I paid $1200 for an f'ing dedicated server and we've had more problems on it than on the shared server.

Please be patient with us.

Thanks!

Any news on that? I have a friend that just asked me what I think about Dreamhost..

now why does it do it automatically for some , and not for some others?

Automatically for some what? Packages, users?

I always have to use ipkg-link when I install packages somewhere other than /

I installed a package (opie-bartender I believe) and it worked automatically...which is why I thought it was supposed to do so..also had a lot of problems installing because of a corrupted SD so I thought the problem could've been related..

Sorry for asking a FAQ kind of question..

Thanks again!

Make sure you've run ipkg-link.

For installations to the SD card you'd do the following:

ipkg-link mount /media/card/packages

(if that doesn't work, remove the 'packages' bit)

Then use the update icons icon, or just restart Opie.

That did work - now why does it do it automatically for some , and not for some others?
