General Discussion / 2gb Sd Card

There are a few points you guys may not be aware of.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=85787\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

On the 5500 at least, the  thing that makes SD "slower" than CF cards is the fact that the SD card slot is only 1 bit as opposed to 16 bits for a CF card slot.

Makes a big read write difference.  However, I still would not give up my 1Gig SD card.

The other most important benefit ext2 provides is the ability to create symbolic links, which is essential if you want to install packages onto it...

Ah yes, sorry, forgot to mention that one. Good point!

I just got a 32 MB MMC. its already FAT. should I mkfs it to ext2?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=85376\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

FAT works just fine if all you want to do is put some documents, music or videos on it.  If you want to use it as a fielsystem then making it ext2 will be better. The main thing that ext2 gives you over FAT is the ability to use "protection" on the files by assigning read write execute (rwx) priviledges to user, group or world.  (Yes I know it gives other benefits, but that's the jist of it).  Leave it FAT if you want to transfer files between your PC (windows or MAC) and your Zaurus, unless you have specific software the Windoze based system can not read ext2 file systems.

Is there a package for a NFS or a Samba server for Opie (3.5.3)?

I have searched to no avail.

SMBMount:
[a href=\"http://www.elsix.org/index.php?w=project&p=170]http://www.elsix.org/index.php?w=project&p=170[/url]
http://www.dasgehtdichnichtsan.de/zaurus/smbmount.html

Heres a good resource on both NFS and SMB:
http://www.ottaky.com/zaurus.php

The directions are straight forward and work well.
from the website:

Mounting Windows shares

It appears that the clever people at Lineo managed to build SMB support into their kernel, and the not so clever people at Sharp forgot to include an SMB client with the Zaurus. The good news is that you can download an SMB client from

http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=220

Then all you have to do is get it to work. Let's assume you have a server called "my_server", that it has an IP address of 192.168.254.226, it is sharing a directory called "Software", and you have a user account called "UserName". The first thing to do is edit your /etc/hosts file and add an entry like this:

192.168.254.226    my_server

Then you need to create a mountpoint ..

mkdir /mnt/my_server

and then you should be able to mount the server like so ..

smbmount //my_server/Software /mnt/my_server -o username=UserName

If all goes well you should be prompted for a password, enter that and hit return. If, OTOH, you see a message complaing about "libncurses.so.5", you will need to install the ncurses pacakge ..

http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=452

and try the smbmount command again.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Oz3.5.3 (collie) On/off Button Problem

Today I am having a strange problem (actually, I've had it before but it's frequent today).  If I hold the Cancel button to suspend the Zaurus (as I always do) then usually it just suspends.  However, sometimes (more often than sometimes today) it will look like it's suspending, but only get halfway.  The screen is dimmed and the unit doesn't respond, but it's not completely suspended.  The only way to recover is a reset with the replace battery switch.

Is this a related problem?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=84271\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I have been affected by this issue as well.  I will tell you that I have been  playing about with things and how I suspend.  Suspending with the menu, never works for me, it always seems to go to the "To-Do" appliaction.  However when I suspend with the cancel button it does suspend and return.  What I have noticed however, is that if I have anything in the CF slot it will not suspend properly, sometimes I get the dim screen sometimes it will freeze when I come back from suspend.  If I "eject" the card before I suspend, I have never had an issue. Could the issue be in the way the CF module interacts with the OS?  Just a thought.

First start off by downloading and installing qtopia Desktop 1.7 from trolltech

http://www.trolltech.com/download/qtopia/

It will work with OZ and Opie.  Once you get it installed (It should install the USB stuff) you will be on the right track.

I have not found an easy way to surf the net thru the USB device, so everytime I want to get to the net with my Zaurus I use my Wireless card (this included updating packages).

Okay guys..

After days of playing around with my Zaurus 5500 installed with OPIE 3.5.3, this is how far I've gone.

...

Well I don't know what to do after I update the list. Any advice on how to go about installing all that is needed to play video for xmms?
I think someone told me to install all the files in the "machine" feed.

Thanks in advance.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=84854\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

You might want to try installing the libxine-plugins for decode and dmx.  My video is working fine (then again I had it woring with opie-player (not very well) befre switching to XMMS.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Media Player In Oz 3.5.3

Howdy, folks,
I had installed Opie/Oz 3.5.2 on my Z (SL-C860) but could never get Mediaplayer to work.     Every time I used it, I would hear clicking and popping noises.  Reading the articles here, I got the impression that there were outstanding issues with Mediaplayer.  I LIKED Opie, but not having a media player was kind of a deal-breaker for me, so I switched to Cacko.  I'd like to give 3.5.3 a try, but I was wondering if Mediaplayer was working now?  Has anyone here got it working?

Try using mplayer with these options "-ac mad -ao oss" and it should make the ticking go away.

Did you ever find out? If so could you share?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=85060\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Yes, I finnaly got my Zaurus and I flashed it with OZ 3.5.3 and Opie 1.2.0. I am using the 64-0 build and moved everything to a 1 Gig SD card I purchased. I use Coredump's altboot which saved me A LOT of time and effort. He also maintain the Hentges ROMS, which I never couple get to work so I "built" my own.

I then went about trying to find a web browser. I installed Opera with the Sharp Compat and used it for a while, but was not happy with it. I just recently started using Konquorer, which is now my favorite browser. I wish someone would compile the newest version or even better get a working copy of Firefox. Once I get back I might start figuring out how to get an emulator working and compile my own stuff.

Anywho... I loaded up opie-player2 only to find out that all of my video studdered like mad (make sure you install the lib-xine codecs) but audio worked great. I finnally settled on XMMS. It plays my videos as wellas all my mp3s.

I use opie-reader for all my eBooks, and I threw in qpegps (make sure you have gpsd) and ran that for good measure. I wish there was a little better program for doing GPS (this prgram is stellar), but something that I could get turn by turn directions on.  I guess I am really asking for Garmin type functionality.  BUt it does work. One tip, patience. I wasn't waiting long enough for it to acquire satellites, so I didn't think it was working, it took me 10 minutes to acquire.

Oh yes, KPhone... I got it working and can do the echo test with FWD, but I get horrible feedback and like a pulsing noise that gets louder until it's unbearable. Unless I can figure this out, it's not usable for me.  Reding the directions in the kPhone help makes all the difference to getting it running.

I will try to find the links and add things to this post as I can find them.  Any specific help you need?

I use
Code: [Select]
--force-depends (note the two '-') and it works for me.

Greg
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=85022\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Tried that and still couldn't get it to install, what I finally did was download it to my Zaurus and install it locally with the -nodeps option and it's working great.

Thanks for the input though.

Supply -force-depends to install that. It's a bug in the dependencies.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=84834\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Even if I supply a -force-depends I still can seem to get it to install, it's almost like it's not acknowledging the -force-depends switch.

Suggestions?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Konqueror Embedded Will Not Install
« on: June 20, 2005, 01:16:53 pm »
Has anyone gotten this to work? I have tried and tried and always run into the same problem.  I even downloaded the libqte2 collie build from the familiar site and tried it with that I can not get konqueror to install no matter what i try. I have Opera working, but I hate the fact that is needs sharp ROM stuff, it's really buggy.  Has anyone gotten anything else to work and if so can you post exactly how you did it?

Thanks

General Discussion / Kismet Issue Starting Ui

Solved: I used the instructions at
http://www.irongeek.com/i.php?submenu=zaur...s/generalosinfo
to successfully install kismet on oz 3.5.3. Apparently it only works when you install all ncurses and kismet files to ram rather then an sd card with ipkg-link.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=83840\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I used those instructions as well and everything works fine.  However, how do you scroll down the list of "gathered" networks?  Anyone figured this out?

Ok, got it with 3.5.3 alright, but for some reason, my new wifi card (Proxim Harmony 8630) has issues reaching past the router. Works fine on the LAN, but not past that. If I ping an IP thats outside the LAN, says network not available. Works sometimes though reaching past the router. Does this without WEP, and no other wifi machine on the network has these problems.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=84582\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Are you sure your default gateway is set correctly?  If you are using DHCP then you should be fine. Does your wireless access point allow ICMP (ping) through it?  I will make an assumption that you are using NAT (network address translation) on your access point.  Is the firewall/router set up to allow packets back into that device.  If you can ping within your network, then it is most likely a default gateway problem.  From a console do a "netstat -nr" you should see a line something like
0.0.0.0         192.168.1.1     0.0.0.0         UG       40 0          0 wlan0
if you have a proper default gateway the IP (192.168.1.1) should be that of your router.

Crash when scrolling thorugh text...

3.5.3 on a 5500, when I press and hold the right side of the 'ring' (not sure what the right word for that is) to scroll through text the zaurus crashes after about 8 characters, screen goes blank and I have to do a 'replace battery' reset to boot it again. This happens in any application.
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

There is a work around for this  (actually two).
The first is not to press the right arrow "key" for more than 2 seconds at a time.

  Second, a snippet from the [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=Opie_3.5.3_on_the_5500]Zaurus 5500 How-To[/url]

Quote
"Do NOT press the right arrow key for more than 2 seconds, or your Z will suspend and you will be unable to restart it without resetting. A quick workaround: "

Code: [Select]
Comment out /dev/apm_bios from /etc/device_table
 Reboot
