Angstrom & OpenZaurus / C Compiler

Thanks a batch for the input.  After reading the referenced posts, I can see that my first problem is going to be getting enough space.  I think the best way to go is to reconfigure my Z with a much larger SD card.  Because of extenuating circumstances, I will probably have to defer even starting this for about a week.  I will get back to it though.  Thanks again for the input.

Hmmm.  I don't see a file resembling that name.  I don't think re-installing would do any good because it's not on the 'ipkg files' list of files TO BE installed.  I'm going to append the output of 'ipkg files gcc'.  Perhaps that might help zero in on the problem.

I hope you're successful.  A list would be great.  Also, an indication as to how much space is needed would be helpful.  I've got a feeling that I might have to setup a development CF card.  Either that or I might have to start over with a bigger SD card.  Probably the later is the better way to go; but, the former might get the nod for an interim solution.

Anyway, I need to figure out exactly what needs to be done and whether I'm headed in the right direction.  Could you please have a look at the following list of files that I have for the gcc package and see what you think?  I sure don't see anything there that looks like a C compiler.  Thanks.

PS - I just noticed that this files list seems to indicate that it thinks the gcc package is installed on the CF card.  I don't know what that's all about.  I'm sure I installed it *FROM* the CF card to the SD card.  That is, the package file was on a CF card when I did the install; but, the destination was the SD card.  I'll have to look into that.  Thanks again.

I installed the gcc package.  According to the info description this is the cc and gcc compilers.  However, I'm finding that it did not install any cc or gcc binaries and there appears to be nothing in the files list that even remotely resembles a compiler.   So, did I do the wrong thing?  Am I even headed in the right direction or do I need to re-group and start over?  Thanks for any input.

I always only SPECIFY one addition at a time.  The thing is that, because of dependencies, even though I only specify  one package, ipkg may attempt to install multiple packages.

Any thoughts on how I can get the opie-mail icon up on the desktop?

Thanks.

Thanks for responding.

As I say, so far the only one that continues to be iconless is opie-mail.  All of the others were ultimately supplied an icon presumably (based on your comments) the next time I re-started opie.

Since I almost always install to my sd card, I typically follow the installation with :

ipkg-link, mount <path_to_dest>

Using 'add' rather than 'mount' probably makes more sense.  I'm just concerned that if there were any other packages installed because of dependency requirements and those packages needed to have links created, those links might not be created if I use 'add' rather than 'mount'.  If I could somehow convince myself that this is not a problem, using 'add' would definitely be the way to go.

I am installing from the command line.  I have, on several occassions, encountered difficulty with package manager where invoking ipkg from the command line has always worked flawlessly for me.  That being the case, I just decided to adopt the policy of always installing from the command line as the path of least resistance.  Perhaps I need to re-think that policy.  If I install from the command line, is there something I can do manually to replicate what package manager does in terms of placing the icons on the desktop?

Thanks for your input.

I have added xmms, konqueror, opie-eye, and opie-mail.  For the first 3, icons eventually showed up on the applications screen although it took a while.  I haven't seen an icon for opie-mail thus far.  It appears that the icons don't get installed as a part of the package installation process.  Apparently it takes something else to get them in place.  So, my question is, what do I do when I install a new application if I want an icon to be available for launching that application?  Thanks for any input.

Thanks, Mickey.  I followed your suggestion.  Konquorer installed straight away and seems to be more than adequate for my browsing needs from a hand-held.  Accordingly, I'm just going to use Konqueror and terminate my search for alternatives.  I consider this problem solved.  Thanks for your help.

I've been reviewing the posts related to browser choice.  It seems that most everything relates to either opera or konqueror and it seems like both camps are having their share of problems.  I appreciate that getting a nearly full-featured browser to work on a handheld is a bit of a challenge.   I recall playing with Links under Gentoo and I was surprised to learn that it supports a  graphical mode.  Anyway, as a result, I was wondering if there was some alternative to opera and konqueror that might not be quite as richly featured but a bit more stable.  I think I can live with some limitations on a handheld.

Just for kicks, I tried to install knoqueror and I got some complaint about the libqte2(>=2.3.10snapshot20050131) dependency not being satisfied.  I do have version 2.3.10 of libqte2 installed but it doesn't say anything about being that snapshot.  I think I just got it from the OZ feed.  So, I  don't really know what's going on with that.

Thanks for any input.

Great suggestion!  It worked great out of the box.  I have a few things to figure out yet like how to play random selections from a list; but, it's working just fine on both mp3 and ogg files.

Thanks for the input.

OK.  I'm giving up on ogg123 (included in vorbis-tools).  I think it must be broken; and, I suspect that the reason it's not an issue is that no one uses it.  So, I want to add the capability to play ogg files from my SL-5500 running Opie.  Being able to play MP3s would be nice frosting on the cake.  Since I've given up on ogg123, what package should I use?  I think that I was probably trying to blaze new trails with ogg123.  Probably not a good idea for someone with my experience.  I want to stay mainstream and run something that a lot of people are running and is known to work.  Suggestions?  Thanks.

> EDIT: wouldn't it figure that as soon as I get done posting I find it. Take a look at the 3rd page.

Thanks, John, for the input.

I don't think I'm experiencing the same probllem as the one discussed in that thread.  I read that thread as talking about a 'skipping' that occurs every once in a while.  Mine is more of a 'sputtering' that produces a jerk in the output at very approximate intervals of about 0.5 seconds.   Then, in that thread  xmms was being used and the format was MP3.  I'm not using xmms and my MP3 stuff plays just fine.  My problem only exists when playing ogg files using ogg123.

My music is on a CF card; but, I had the ogg123 binary installed on the SD card.  I tried moving the binary to the CF card hoping that might cure the problem; but, it didn't.

I forgot to mention in my earlier post that my hardware is an SlL-5500 and I'm running the bootstrap immage.

I'd still like to know if *ANYONE* has gotten ogg123 to decode files properly on an SL-5500.  Just knowing that there was someone out there who has had success with this would be very reassuring.
Thanks again.

I'm curious as to whether anyone has been able to get ogg123 to work (from the vorbis-utils package - 0.5.3, unstable feed).  I'm invoking it from the command line and it works but the audio output is jerky -- sort of like  sputtering.  I'm running the bootstrap image.  Maybe I should be using a different feed?  The word 'unstable' makes me a bit nervous; but, I don't know what else to use.  Any suggestions on what I might do to get this working?  Thanks.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Feeds
« on: June 08, 2005, 06:20:07 pm »
Thanks, Alan, for the response.

Well, knowing that there are default feeds explains a lot.  Unfortunately, I think I still have quite a
ways to go.  I would sure like to know exactly what the default feeds are and how they are set.  For example, are they compiled in or are they configurable somewhere?  Then, I would like to know how
the package manager decides where to source a particular package if it is available from more than
one feed.  Basically, I'm just trying to figure out exactly how this all works.

> your question is really strange... you say you don't understand anything to feeds, but you use the  > bootstrap image ? you like challenge, don't you ?

To some it may seem like the more or most difficult approach.  To me, it simplifies things a lot.
I'm a command-line sort of guy.  Anytime I belly up to a GUI, that's where bad things start happening.
GUIs are nice as a convenience after one understands the basics.  It's like calculators are a nice convenience once one knows basic 4-function arithmetic; but, they shouldn't be a substitue for
learning basic arithmethc skills.  I'm just trying to learn the basics of the hardware and OZ.  After
I've done that, I can always add a GUI.

Thanks again for the input.

I have an SL-5000 which I acquired several years ago.  I never was able to get into it and I think one of the reasons was that I never could figure out how feeds work.  Now I'm trying again.  I reflashed the rom with the bootstrap image.  I notice that the comments in /etc/ipkg.conf say that I must have at least 1 src and 1 destination entry.  There are several destination entries but no src entry.  However, I can still install packages.  How I can do that without a src entry in /etc/ipkg.conf is a complete mystery to me and I have no idea where these packages are comming from.  It's clear that I need to understand how this ipkg/feeds thing works a whole lot better.  So, my question is:  Is there some documentaion somewhere that explains this in detail?  Thanks for any input.

General Discussion / Ogg123 Problems
« on: June 08, 2005, 01:25:29 am »
I have a cf card with a test ogg file on it.  It plays just fine when I play it using ogg123 on my FC3 system.  However, when I try to play that same file from my SL-5000 using the same CF card, the music is jerky.  The best way I can describe it is it seems like the output might be interrupted briefly every time a line prints to standard error.  (I doubt that that is the case; but, it's the best way I can think of to describe what I hear.)  I have tried various buffer settings, etc. and the problem just seems to persist.  I have done quite a bit of googling to see if anyone else has had a similar experience; but,  most everything out there in Google Land just seems to praise how well ogg works.  So, I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas of anything that I might try to cure this problem.  Thanks for any input.
