Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Gpe & Apm Issues On C3k
« on: November 24, 2005, 04:35:24 pm »
It is exactly the same with me. apm --suspend doesn't work. It even freezes my machine sometimes.

The official GPE image with the 2.6 kernel is still very buggy. I want to help its development by reporting bugs just I need to find some time for it )

Quote
I've tried to flash my C3k with gpe-image-spitz-20051021200253.rootfs.tar.gz, and it does boot and start nicely.

I'm unable to suspend or switch off the Zaurus, though, the on/off button doesn't work, and issuing a "apm -s" command in the terminal result only in an error message (device busy or something like that, can't recall exactly, and I've reflashed Opie since...)

Did anyone else try GPE on a C3000 recently? It looks good, and promising, but if I can't turn it off it's a no go for me...

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Mounting Problem With Cf Memory Card
« on: October 30, 2005, 05:30:26 am »
Hi All,

I am using OZ 3.5.3 with GPE on a Spitz. I am new to the Zaurus and not too experienced with Linux in general.

Although my wifi CF card is recognized correctly and works in order, my CF memory card is not automounted.

Is this normal with OZ or it is the fault of the OZ image I use? The Cacko ROM I used originaly seemed to handle this correctly.

How can I configure the system to automount my CF memory cards? They have FAT16 on them.
My OZ installation includes the /mnt/cf folder but it seems that it is not used and empty no matter the memory card is inserted or not.

Any help is appreciated,
Andras

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Up To Date Feed For Gpe
« on: October 28, 2005, 06:23:18 am »
My recent experiences with the feed:

I installed Abiword from the feed without any problems and seems to work perfectly.

Gnumeric 1.6 had post-install and dependency errors and only -force-overwrite installed it. When I start it, it complains about not being able to load/save settings. It seems that it misses some Gnome configuration utilities (gconftool-2 ???) without which it cannot load/save its preferences (e.g. which toolbars are visible).
Is there a way to fix this?

If you want to have a lot of bugs fixed and/or try new apps like gpe-mini-browser, add http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/sfeed/ to your feeds.

Finally a feed which includes Abiword and Gnumeric. Can't wait to get home and try it on my Z.

I am also interested in this card because it seems to be very affordable.

It is listed on the Zaurus bluetooth compatibility page, so I assume it should work.

The compatibility page says that it is supported by Cacko 1.22 which doesn't mean that OZ and PdaXrom supports it. They should, but you never know.

Don't know if works on Zaurus, but I'm just trying to help the community.

I installed OZ/GPE images yesterday onto my Spitz and as far as I recall Sylpheed was already installed on some of them. And it seemed to work as well, although I didn't configure it.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Switching To Gpe? Need Advise
« on: October 24, 2005, 10:16:11 am »

I am a veteran when it comes to opie, however i have never flashed GPE on my sl 5500, however i can see that gpe is progressing well, and i do think that the future for linux handhelds will be based on X (or a micro version of it) considering the large apps alredy avilable.
So I need some help,
1. What are the benefits of using GPE
2. All i need is a working setup, power on and off etc working ok, i dont mind broken package managers I cna use ipkg from the command line.
3. Working internet tools, like mozilla/minimo, sylpheed
Will i get these if i switch to GPE?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=81533\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I believe you are completely right about the future of X on the Zaurus and on other PDAs. I think the whole Qtopia and OPIE thing is a detour and the future is a standard linux and X on the Zaurus. For this reason I am trying to install OZ 3.5.3/3.5.4RC with GPE onto my C3000.

As you may know OpenZaurus is a Debian based distro and supports the latest kernels (2.6.x). In theory, a GPE based Zaurus should be able to run all of the arm ported X apps which are not too big for the 64Mb of RAM in the Zaurus.

However, currently OZ/GPE is not very smooth on the Spitz (it may be different with your Zaurus). On/off doesn't work at all and I couldn't find any icons on the GPE interface which I could use to suspend the machine (I am a GPE begginner though).

I couldn't configure my wifi card either and the GPE look&feel app freezes completely (I wanted to change font sizes).

I am sure newer OZ/GPE distros will become stable enough soon but there is some work to be done.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Oz/gpe Image For Spitz (sl-c3000) ?

I can send you or put in a temporal http/ftp server.
The C3000 (spitz) can use very well Sylpheed and abiword.
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Thanks for the help.
I could find new GPE images for my Spitz on the OpenZaurus 3.5.4RC download folder structure. They have been uploaded only recently.

Asm-nai also sent me links for the GPE images (kernels 2.4 and 2.6) he created:
[a href=\"http://naismith.sakura.ne.jp/feed/rom/gpe1024-2.6/]http://naismith.sakura.ne.jp/feed/rom/gpe1024-2.6/[/url]
http://www.naismith.sakura.ne.jp/feed/rom/0928-k2.4/

I have already installed some of the images and asm-nai's k2.4 image seems to be the most stable. I am going to experiment with them.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Cannot Install Oz 3.5.4rc On C3000
« on: October 24, 2005, 09:53:53 am »

* you need to upload gnu-tar to your medium. Be sure to use the supplied updater.sh, not an older one
* 3.5.4-RC ships with kernel 2.6 for the 3000 which boots directly from hda1 - no pivotboot image needed.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=100653\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Thanks a lot.
It works now with the gnu-tar copied to the root folder of the CF card.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Cannot Install Oz 3.5.4rc On C3000
« on: October 23, 2005, 03:31:37 pm »
Hi,

I would like to install OZ 3.5.4RC with GPE onto my C3000 but the installation fails. After erasing the flash, it fails with:
--------------------------------
...
HDD RO file system
Now formatting...
Now extracting...
xf: not found
Error!
...
--------------------------------

I downloaded (and placed in the root of the CF card) the following files (from the download folder of 3.5.4RC):

- gpe-image-spitz-20051021200253.rootfs.tar.gz (hdimage1.tgz)
- updater.sh.spitz (updater.sh)
- zImage-2.6.14-rc1-spitz-20051021200253.bin (zimage.bin)

Since there wasn't any pivotboot image file in the 3.5.4RC download folder, I took the pivotboot file from the download folder of 3.5.3 (pivotboot-image-spitz-20050428205242.rootfs.img) and used it as initrd.bin.

I am new to the Zaurus world so I may be doing something completely wrong.

Any help is appreciated!

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Oz Downloads Are Very Slow!
« on: October 23, 2005, 02:35:39 pm »
Hi All,

I am trying to download OZ 3.5.3 and 3.5.4RC but some of the files seems to be impossible to download (usually the hd image files). I am using Firefox on Ubuntu Hoary. The downloads start very slow, continue very slow and then simply stop after some kilobytes. Some of the smaller files come fast for some reason unlike the big ones. It may well be that the server is under heavy load and stops these downloads when higher priority web tasks are at hand.

Are these files published on the sf.net WEB area? Because in this case I understand why.

Why dont' the OZ team use sf.net download sites? They are mirrored all over the word and are FAST.
If the files are in the sf.net WEB area, I believe they should be moved to the Files area because the WEB area is simply not designed to handle highly popular downloads.

It may also be a good idea to use bittorrent for distribution. I would certainly let some of the images on my machines for others.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Oz/gpe Image For Spitz (sl-c3000) ?
« on: October 17, 2005, 12:08:50 pm »
Does anyone know where can I download the latest OZ/GPE image for the SL-C3000?

I would like to use an X-based distro but PdaXrom doesn't support my C3000 so I suppose the only chance for me is to use OpenZaurus with GPE.

If anyone has an idea what system could run Sylpheed, Abiword, Gnumeric on my C3000 (with a Pretec Wifi CF and an Eagletec bluetooth CF card), please, let me know.

Any suggestion is welcome!

Hi All,

I have managed to install X/Qt, PocketWorkstation and OpenOffice 1.1.4 on my SL-C3000 (many thanks to Meanie for his great howto page).

However, OpenOffice programs seem to require a lot of time to load. The spreadsheet component, Calc, loads in about a minute. After that it seems to work normally. Is this normal or I need to configure something to speed the load process up?

I have a 128Mb swap for PocketWorkstation on the internal microdrive and PocketWorkstation is also installed here in a 768Mb loopback filesystem.

I have already read somewhere on this forum that I would be better off by using Abiword and Gnumeric instead of OpenOffice for their much smaller memory footprint.

Thanks,
Andras
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=86001\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I already posted this in another thread:
OO 1.1.4 takes for me about 8min to load (128Mb swapfile on hdd3, pocketworkstation via loopback (640Mb).
I wonder how you get a loading time of just one minute?
ms
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=86840\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

The ~1min I measured is for the second start of OO Calc in one PocketWorkstation session. I think this is more relevant than the first start because if you use the Zaurus frequently and you don't shut PocketWorkstation down (there is no need for this if you run it paralell to Qtopia) you would probably get this load time when you want to use Calc.

By the way, OO Write loads even slower than Calc. In fact, I couldn't even wait it over.

Some comparisson with Gnumeric, Abiword and Evolution:

- Abiword: First load: 1-1,5min. Regular use: 10s
- Gnumeric: First load: 1,5-2min Regular use: 15s
- Evolution: First load: 2,5-3min Regular use: 16s

How I measured: When I start the program there is no other program running in the background. If you previously run a program which needs a lot of memory (e.g. apt-get), you will get much longer load times.

I also tried to run Abiword, Gnumeric and Evolution together and it didn't make the load times much worse. This is not very surprising since they are all gtk based apps. This

It very much seems that I will drop OpenOffice in favour of Abiword and Gnumeric because these have acceptable load times on my Zaurus SL-C3000.

Evolution would be acceptable too but it is very much designed for large displays (you can't switch off the so I think I will use KDE Pim/Pi and Sylpheed instead. Sylpheed even has vcard integration for its access book so I believe it will be easy to use with Addressbook/pi (almost perfect integration).

Software / Debian Pocketworkstation Networking Doesn't Work

i had this, it was failing to set up the dhcp. then i came across:

"
The internet can be controlled through Qtopia as it always has been. However the up and down scripts don't create a resolv.conf file for the chroot environment when using DHCP. An easy hack is to add the line

cp /etc/resolv.conf /usr/mnt.rom/cf/debroot/etc
to the bottom of the /etc/pcmcia/network.functions files. Then reboot to make it effective.

"
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=86369\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Networking seems to work with the added line. Now I can ping and apt-get is installing abiword just now.

!!! Many thanks !!!

Thanks a lot, I will try it when I get home. Here at my company I can't connect the Z to the local network (strict networking policies...grrr).

I can't wait to install abiword by apt-get on the debian PW instance, I didn't manage to install it on the Cacko ROM/Qtopia.
