Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Xcas Installation On Sl-5500
« on: July 12, 2005, 12:57:45 pm »
Hi,

I've been trying to get XCAS (or some good computer algebra system) to install on my new SL-5500 (running OZ 3.5.3 + GPE), but am not having success, probably because I'm nt very familiar with Linux.  Thus my question:

Can anyone give me step-by-step instructions on downloading and installing XCAS on my SL-5500 (I don't have a network card, but I do have a card reader, an SD card, a CF card, and a Windows XP system)?

Or, conversely, I've been talking to Lardman because I saw that he uses XCAS (and has an .ipk for it), but he sent this reply:

I have a feeling that this stuff is built using ARM5 (as my toolchain is setup for my C750), and you need ARM4 so:
1. it may not install as ipkg won't recognise the arch and,
2. you may get unknown instruction errors when you run it.

Hmm, if you can find someone with a GPE 5500 setup with OE/BB I'll give you/them the patches for giac to get it to build.

Can anyone help out with this?

Thanks,
Phillip

You are holding the wrong buttons. Don't hold any of the big buttons outside. Open the keyboard and actually hold the keys marked "c" and "d".

Thanks for the pointer.  I forgot that this unit has a keyboard, which is the reason I got it in the first place

Hi everyone,

Let me preface what I say by saying that I don't have experience with Linux - I just bought a refurbished SL-5500 off of Ebay, and this is my first experience with the operating system.

Having said that, I'm having problems flashing OZ + GPE to my Zaurus.  I have a card reader, and bought a 128 MB Sandisk CF card.  I copied the kernal and the GPE image over to the blank card, renaming them 'zImage' and 'initrd.bin', respectively.

I then put the CF card in the Zaurus, removed the battery cover, held what I thought was the C and D buttons (the one showing a menu, and the one with the envelope printed on it - I assume those are what are referred to as C and D, right?), and pushed the full reset button with the tip of my stylus.

Nothing happened.  I looked at the front of the device, and the yellow charging LED came on for 5-10 seconds and then went off again.  The green mail LED did not light up at all.  I thought maybe the button combination was wrong, so I tried using every 2-button combination (with the exception of the 4-way pad) that I could, but still nothing.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Phillip

Edit:  I didn't realize the 'C' and 'D' refer to the letters on the keyboard.  The unit is currently flashing
