6000 - Tosa / Voip To Telephone Access? Recommendations?

I haven't tried dialing out from the Z since I haven't put $ on account, but it works the other way with incoming calls. Are you still having trouble?

Please pardon the following rant, folks, but after my experience I cannot recommend SIPphone as a VSP (voice over IP service provider) to Zaurus users. I think this is really unfortunate because SIPphone seems to have a lot going for it. Their prices and features are great, and the Gizmo Project software itself seems like a terrific VoIP client. And I like how they're calling Skype out with the whole open/closed argument.

I still can't dial out to PSTN numbers with SIPphone as my VSP and KPhone as my client, though, even after checking and double-checking (and triple-checking) every setting in KPhone. Unfortunately, the users and admins in the discussion forums at both Gizmo Project and its parent, SIPphone, were of zero help to me. The only bit of useful information that I found was in an old post made by a SIPphone employee that says "sorry for the trouble, however the kphone sip implementation when making a call doesn't cover the full range of options specified in the sip rfc."

This, and yet KPhone appears to be listed as a supported client at their partner site, SIPsoftware.com.

To make matters worse, the trouble ticket that I submitted went unanswered for a week and then wasn't answered to my satisfaction (no solution for the problem was given, nor was an adequate explanation why it wouldn't work ~ I was referred instead to the developers of KPhone). It isn't a codec problem from what I can tell (KPhone supports two of the three codecs SIPphone uses, iLBC and g711u). However, the truth is that I have no idea what the problem is.

The reason I got a Zaurus in the first place was so that I could ride this new and exciting wave of free and near-free calls with VoIP and open standards. For this, SIPphone has turned out to be a disappointing dead end.

In the end, I created an account with Free World Dialup (FWD) on a whim, configured KPhone to use it and then dialed an 800 number ~ and it worked. It took less than 5 minutes. I'll be going with FWD as soon as I find an affordable PSTN provider for outgoing calls.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Help Needed Installing Openzaurus On An Sl-5600

Wrong! Your trying to flash the gpe-image-poodle-20050409140246.rootfs.jffs2.bin as your kernel.

Please read the instructions in the link that lardman gave you in his post.

You need the 'zImage-poodle-xxxx.bin' renamed zImage or 'zimage.bin'

That's it! I'm running OZ now and am finding my way around.

Thank you both for your responses, and thanks, Greg2, for the solution!

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Help Needed Installing Openzaurus On An Sl-5600
« on: August 16, 2005, 11:53:57 pm »
I recently got a Zaurus SL-5600 and I want to install OpenZaurus. I believe that I've downloaded and installed everything correctly, but I haven't been able to get the Z to successfully boot into OpenZaurus at all. The only thing that I can figure is that the files I installed weren't downloaded properly, but all the checksums are correct.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Here's what I've done:

1. I downloaded everything from: http://openzaurus.org/official/unstable/3.5.3/sl5600/

2. Renamed "gpe-image-poodle-20050409140246.rootfs.jffs2.bin" to "zImage"

3. Renamed "bootstrap-image-poodle-20050409140246.rootfs.jffs2.bin" to "initrd.bin"

4. I left "updater.sh" as is

5. Copied these three to an SD card (I checked and it's all in /mnt/card)

6. Reset and enter Maintenance Menu

7. In the Maintenance Menu, clicked "Update"

8. Clicked "SD" for SD card

9. Clicked "Yes"

10. Reset and then pressed Cancel/On/Off button

11. Sharp startup screen came up and I waited for it to install. Z reports "Success!" and finally says "Please reset"

12. Reset, and nothing happens

13. Push Cancel/On/Off button and nothing happens (the battery light turns off but that's it)

14. So I restore the Z from a ROM backup and I'm back where I started.

6000 - Tosa / VoIP On the 6000

I have speech feature processing code that calculates stress, empathy and activity for people in conversation. I want to run this real-time speech feature processing on the Zaurus while using kphone.

Congratulations on all the recent press, Anmol! I came across your project's website last week while searching for Zaurus-related information and thought your project sounds brilliant. I hope you can make the Jerk-O-Meter software available for us to try out some time.

Have you, or anyone else for that matter, been able to use KPhone (or any other VoIP client) on the Zaurus to dial out to a PSTN number?

When I dial "**XXXXXXXXXX" (without the quotes, of course, and the 10-digit PSTN number instead of the Xs), KPhone says the call is active and reports "trying - your call is important to us" (a message that KPhone receives from the VoIP provider). I've tried "*XXXXXXXXXX", "XXXXXXXXXX@proxy01.sipphone.com" and "099XXXXXXXXXX" as well (which was suggested in another thread).

SIPphone even logs the call on my account at my.sipphone.com. Unfortunately, the PSTN number I dial never rings. I've been able to place SIP to SIP calls with KPhone (and the tkcPhone demo), just not SIP to PSTN.

Any ideas?

 ~ Christefano

ps. Yes, I do have "call out" minutes with SIPphone (they call them SIP Minutes).

6000 - Tosa / Voip To Telephone Access? Recommendations?

Alas, no. They claim they will have a linux client out in a few months, but I doubt they are even aware of the Zaurus (I referred to mine as Kphone on Linux).

So no luck here, I am afraid,

Craig...

Thanks for the reply, Craig!

SIPphone is working on a Linux version of what they're calling Gizmo Project, and the public release has been pushed back from August to September. I've asked if it will run on tho Zaurus (in both SIPphone's forum and Gizmo Project's) but haven't heard anything yet.

I'll post again in OE Forums when I know more.

In the meantime, have you gotten any other VoIP softphone on the Zaurus to dial out to PSTN numbers?

Any tricks to getting kphone (on the Zaurus 6k) working with Stanaphone? I have registered, have money sitting in the account, but can't make outbound calls. I can call into my Zaurus by using my PSTN phone and dialing the NY number. But outbound calls always give me "unauthorized" dialog box.

TIA,

Craig...

I'm having the same problem that you describe (and have posted a request for help with this). Have you been able to solve this problem?

General Discussion / Unable To Make Pstn Calls With Kphone
« on: August 13, 2005, 04:31:57 am »
Hello,

I recently put KPhone/Pi 1.0.0 on my SL-5600 with theKompany ROM. I've set up my SIPphone "identity" so that it registers successfully, and incoming calls (by dialing my SIPphone-provided "virtual number" with a PSTN phone) come through wonderfully.

Unfortunately, I'm completely unable to call out to PSTN numbers. I receive an error saying "Unauthorized." Has anyone else had this problem?

Meanwhile, are there other VoIP softphones available for the Zaurus that people here have successfully gotten to call out to PSTN numbers? The only other one that I know of in tkcPhone, but I haven't been able to download it as theKompany.com has a dead link on their website. It would be appreciated if someone would be able to provide a working link or even send me a copy.
